Carl Jonson turns in the Rebels’ top individual performance with a tie for 19th in Texas

The UNLV men’s golf team shot a final-round 18-over-par 302 on Sunday and finished in 11th place at the Morris Williams Invitational, which was played at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,412 yards).

Texas was the only team under par and won the event by five shots at 4-under 848. Texas Tech was second at 1-over, followed by TCU in third at 2-over, Oklahoma State in fourth at 4-over and New Mexico in fifth at 8-over. UNLV’s 54-hole total was 41-over 893.

Texas Tech’s Finley Ewing IV’s 3-under 68 during the final round propelled him to earn medalist honors by a shot at 7-under 206. Oklahoma State’s Jordan Niebrugge was second at 6-under, followed by TCU’s Julien Brun in third at 5-under.

UNLV sophomore Carl Jonson led all Rebel players with a tie for 19th at 4-over 217 after a final-round 3-over 74. Sophomore Kurt Kitayama (77), junior Nicholas Maruri (74) and freshman AJ McInerney (79) all tied for 54th at 14-over, while senior Kevin Penner finished 67th at 20-over after a final-round 77. Freshman Zane Thomas, who competed an an individual, tied for 64th at 19-over after a final-round 1-over 72..

UNLV’s next tournament will be the Mountain West Championship, May 3-5, in Tucson, Ariz.
