UNLV junior Carl Jonson and San Diego State junior Xander Schauffele have been selected as the Mountain West Men’s Co-Golfers of the Week for tournaments played March 14-18. This is the first MW weekly accolade for Jonson and second for Schauffele.

Jonson, a Bainbridge Island, Wash., native, recorded two top-six finishes in the last week as he tied for sixth at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., and finished fourth at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nev. He was five shots off the lead in Tucson and just three back in Primm.

On March 14-16 at the NIT, he fired a 6-under-par 210 (71-69-70) on the par 72, 7,200-yard Omni Tucson National Course. His fourth-place finish in Primm marked the top individual finish of his career, eclipsing his previous best of seventh place. He tied for seventh at last year’s NCAA Regional and was seventh at the 2012 NIT.

At the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 17-18, he carded a 3-under 213 (71-67-75) on the par-72, 7,131-yard Desert Course.

His middle rounds in both tournaments were his finest as he shot 3-under 69 during the second round in Tucson and had a career-low 5-under 67 at the Jackrabbit Invitational.

Jonson helped UNLV to a tie for fourth as a team at the NIT and a run-away team title at the Jackrabbit Invitational, winning the event by 20 strokes. It was UNLV’s third win as a team on the year and second in its last three events.

With two top-10 finishes this week, he now has five for his career. His scoring average for the week was 70.5 per round. He turned in two rounds in the 60s and five of six under par.

Schauffele tied for sixth at the NIT.

The Rebels, who have moved up to No. 22 in the Golfstat national rankings, will be back in action March 28-30 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
