11 Years of German Tradition Started with One Man’s Vision

What do Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Vladimir Lenin and Empress Sissi of Austria have in common? They all visited Hofbräuhaus Munich during their lifetimes. Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas opened near the famous Las Vegas Strip on January 31, 2004 bringing a piece of “real Munich” to the scenery and has since had more than 2.5 million visitors. It is the success story of visionary Stefan Gastager, born in 1963, in Garching (near Munich) Germany.

He began his professional career as a car mechanic for such luxury brands as Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche. In the second stage of his career he built formula 1 race engines for BMW and continued his career as a service pool specialist in Malaysia. During his vacation to Las Vegas in 1999, Gastager had a vision.

“There were replicas of the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Canal and the Empire State Building, but no authentic German restaurant,” Gastager recalled. “So why not recreate a true copy of the Hofbräuhaus in Munich and bring a piece of Bavarian culture and tradition to Las Vegas?”

Gastager made sure every detail was accounted for, from the hand-painted ceilings and look of the exterior, to authentic menu items such as schnitzel, sausages and jumbo pretzels mirroring Bavarian dishes from the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich. And don’t forget the Hofbräu beer that is held to the standards of the Purity Law of 1516, and shipped fresh to Las Vegas from Germany. Guests at Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas drink a quarter of a million liters of beer annually.

The opening of Hofbräuhaus Chicago was also spearheaded by Gastager, which has quickly become the top-selling Hofbräuhaus in the United States since its opening in January 2013. Gastager is proud that his vision has become such a successful reality, earning several awards and accolades in both his native Germany and right here in Las Vegas. One of those being Mayor Carolyn Goodman declaring January 31 Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas Day.
