“Flip Through Summer”
Family Fun Summer Kickoff – May 31
Join us for a celebration of some of children’s most beloved books and characters
United Way of Southern Nevada, in partnership with Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow, is hosting “Flip Through Summer” a special day of celebration, imagination and the magic of some of children’s most beloved books and characters on May 31 from 9:00am to 12pm at Lorenzi Park.
“This event brings to life the magic of reading and provides an opportunity for children to get excited about reading during the summer,” said Cass Palmer, United Way of Southern Nevada President and CEO. “Children will be inspired to make reading pledges which will be displayed prominently and collectively create a life-size book.”
During this family fun-filled community event, participating children will create ‘The World’s Largest Story’ and have the opportunity to visit themed book nooks with live characters reading favorite children’s books. Emceed by Chet Buchanan, the event will also feature a book swap, live entertainment, face painting, child-friendly activities, a Las Vegas Fire & Rescue fire truck, community family resources and complimentary healthy snacks, juice, ice cream and coffee.
“Community partners are showing great support and have stepped up to really make this a unique event,” said Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow. “Each child can visit six book nooks with live readings and participate in various creative and imaginative children’s activities.”
The event encourages summer reading, since children can lose as much as three months of reading comprehension during the summer. As part of the event, children can complete a fun and easy summer reading pledge, encouraging summer reading. Families can bring two books per person and swap them for two books during the “Flip Through Summer” Book Swap.
