MGM Resorts International celebrates Chinese New Year 2014, the Year of the Horse, with exhilarating lion dances, spectacular displays at Bellagio, ARIA and The Shops at Crystals, and authentic cuisine at a variety of restaurants.
The seventh animal in the Asian zodiac is the Horse, a symbol of nobility, class and perseverance. Individuals born in the Year of the Horse tend to be intelligent, energetic and sociable.
Lion Dances Dynamic and colorful lion dances will commemorate the Year of the Horse at Bellagio, ARIA, The Shops at Crystals and MGM Grand:
- The Shops at Crystals – Friday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. at the entrance near Todd English P.U.B.
- MGM Grand – Friday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. inside the main lobby
- Bellagio – Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. at the main porte cochere
- ARIA – Monday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the main porte cochere
Yau Kung Moon will perform the Chinese lion dances in a traditional Southern Shaolin Kung Fu system, a collection of martial arts with more than 1,000 years of history. Yau Kung Moon, which translates to “Style of Flexible Power,” is one of the world’s most respected martial arts, dragon and lion dance organizations. Known for its trademark gold uniforms and innovative routines, Yau Kung Moon has been recognized internationally for being the first U.S. team to compete in the 1990 Invitational World Lion Dance Festival in Malaysia.
Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens
Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens ushers in the Year of the Horse with a complimentary display through March 1. The display’s bold centerpiece features seven life-size horses parading atop a three-tier lush mountain while a majestic gold stallion rears at the peak; the total number of eight represents good fortune.
At the entrance of the Conservatory, an 18-foot-tall custom-made Chinese money tree symbolizes prosperity, good fortune and nobility. The lucky tree flourishes with 384 oversized gold-leafed coins on its branches as mounds of I-Ching coins, a traditional Chinese symbol for money, surround its base.
Enhancing the Conservatory setting with the sounds of celebration, the Las Vegas-based Beijing Trio performs traditional folk and pop music with authentic Chinese instruments from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m., nightly.
The design of the Conservatory’s tranquil temple is guided by the ancient practice of Feng Shui – the art of using surroundings to attract harmony, balance and positive life energy. Each garden within the Chinese New Year display encompasses water, ensuring a positive flow of energy; and the three friends of winter – pine, bamboo and plum, symbolizing perseverance, integrity and modesty, respectively.
ARIA
Beginning Friday, Jan. 24, ARIA’s main lobby will be adorned with celebratory decor in honor of the Year of the Horse, featuring an 8-foot-tall stallion constructed from steel by an equestrian sculptor from Wilton, CT. A 70-meter long dragon will hang from the lobby’s ceiling along with 144 traditional Chinese lanterns.
The Shops at Crystals
Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Flower Carpet on the first floor of The Shops at Crystals will feature a 12-foot-tall horse sculpture with an aluminum finish. The stallion will stand among an elegant orchid garden filled with more than 2,400 flowers. Throughout The Shops at Crystals, I-Ching coin tree sculptures and bamboo gardens will flourish while handmade red silk lanterns will adorn the ceilings.
Culinary Specialties In celebration of the Year of the Horse, select MGM Resorts International restaurants will feature specialty menus and authentic cuisine from the Far East.
