Locals Receive Free Admission, Opportunity to Experience Virtual Reality Experience about Massacre
The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, celebrates its seventh anniversary on Thursday, Feb. 14. This date coincides with the 90th anniversary of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, from which the Museum maintains a significant number of artifacts. Details about all Museum events taking place this week follow:
The Mob Museum’s Seventh Anniversary
DATE: Thursday, February 14
TIME: Times for individual programs vary; see blow.
LOCATION: The Mob Museum.
COST: Free admission for Nevada residents with valid ID and a special buy one, get one free admission for non-residents.
ACTIVITIES:
- The Chicago 00 Project’s virtual reality experience featuring the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.
- TIME: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- LOCATION: In the Museum courtroom.
- DESCRIPTION: This award-winning VR experience transports audiences to the exact spots where the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre events unfolded by superimposing images from then and now in virtual reality. Audiences can use their smartphones and wear Google Cardboard VR Goggles or use the Museum’s latest technology, Oculus Go, on YouTube’s 360 channel to be immersed in the site. It provides eye-opening insights into the infamous Feb. 14, 1929 event, when Chicago police discovered the bodies of seven men, all shot in the back and riddled with bullets in a north side garage. Before visiting the Museum, guests are encouraged to learn more and download the apps by visiting here. Both iPhone and Android versions are available.
- St. Valentine’s Day Massacre Weapons on Display
- TIME: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- LOCATION: Courtroom on the second floor.
- DESCRIPTION: Get up close and personal with the two Thompson machine guns that were used by the perpetrators of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago. The guns were confiscated from a murder suspect’s house in Stevensville, Michigan, and linked to the massacre through the work of pioneering ballistics expert, Calvin Goddard. Members of the Sheriff’s department in Berrien County, Michigan will be present to answer questions.
- The Underground Anniversary Specials
- TIME: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- LOCATION: The Underground speakeasy and distillery, located in the Museum’s basement.
- DESCRIPTION: In celebration of the Museum’s anniversary, The Underground will feature food and drink specials, including select $8 handcrafted cocktails and 20 percent off all food menu items. Cocktails available at this discounted price include the Prohibition classics Southside, Scofflaw and The Chicago. Discounted dishes offered at 20 percent off include the Beer Cheese with Pretzel Bites, Cheese Pizza and Pastry Pigs with Whiskey Mustard.
- Wiseguy Speaker Series and Book Signing: “Scarface and the Untouchable: Al Capone, Eliot Ness and the Battle for Chicago.”
- TIME: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a book signing to follow.
- LOCATION: Courtroom on the second floor. Seating is on a first come, first served basis with a maximum occupancy of 120 guests.
- DESCRIPTION: Over the decades, the stories of mobster Al Capone and lawman Eliot Ness have been subjected to literacy license and Hollywood exaggeration. This new book from authors Max Allan Collins and A. Brad Schwartz peels back the layers of these myths to reveal a deeper narrative of these iconic figures. The event will conclude with a book signing.
Annual Anniversary Blood Drive in Partnership with Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services)

LOCATION: The Mob Museum’s back lot.

The Road to Perdition
DATE: Saturday, Feb. 16
TIME: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a book signing to follow.
LOCATION: Courtroom on the second floor.
COST: Free
DESCRIPTION: In this special discussion, “Road to Perdition” author Max Allan Collins will be interviewed by fellow author A. Brad Schwartz (“Scarface and the Untouchable”) about the fascinating story behind his acclaimed novel. Set in Chicago during the Great Depression, the graphic novel, “Road to Perdition” tells the story of Michael Sullivan, a Mob enforcer on the hunt for revenge after a failed hit.

- The real-life Mob inspiration behind the character of Michael Sullivan.
- The Academy Award-winning film adaptation starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law.

Counterterrorism – Community Safety Forum Sponsored by NV Energy
DATE: Sunday, Feb. 17
TIME: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
LOCATION: Courtroom on the second floor.
COST: Free, including free Museum admission thanks to sponsorship provided by NV Energy.
DESCRIPTION: February’s Community Safety Forum will address the expression, “see something, say something,” and its significance in detail. The presentation will be conducted by an officer from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, who will discuss the functions of the counterterrorism detail and fusion center. Attendees will learn how authorities are able to collect intelligence by working in concert with other agencies to prevent terrorist acts and rely on the community to help. Live streaming of the presentations will be posted on The Mob Museum’s website thanks to NV Energy’s generous support. Registration for attendance is required.
