UNLV FRESHMAN BRANDON MCCOY NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UNLV men’s basketball also receives votes in Associated Press poll after 6-0 start to the season
UNLV freshman forward Brandon McCoy was named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, November 26, the league announced Monday. It is the first career MW weekly honor for McCoy.
The Chicago native, who came to UNLV out of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, led the Runnin’ Rebels to a 3-0 week with victories over Rice (95-68), Utah (85-58) and Southern Utah (101-82). In the three games, McCoy averaged 21.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. In addition, he shot 61.1 percent from the field and 90.9 percent from the free-throw line.
McCoy recorded a double-double in all three games.
Against Rice, he poured in a game-high 23 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and was 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. Against Utah in the championship game of the MGM Resorts Main Event, he posted a career-best 26 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. He was 9 of 14 from the field and a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. He was named the event’s MVP. He added 15 points and 14 rebounds with a career-high and game-high six blocks against Southern Utah on Saturday.
With a record of 6-0, UNLV is off to its best start in six years as it was also undefeated after six games during the 2011-12 season. The Runnin’ Rebels are also receiving votes in this week’s Associated Press Poll.
UNLV will play its first true road game of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Northern Iowa. The game, which is part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT on ESPN3. The Runnin’ Rebels’ next home game will be Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. vs. Arizona at the Thomas & Mack Center.
