UNLV men’s basketball 7-footer Brandon McCoy was named 2017-18 Preseason Mountain West Freshman of the Year Wednesday. The league released its Preseason All-Conference Team, which was selected by members of the media, in conjunction with the start of its men’s basketball media summit at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Las Vegas.

McCoy, originally from Chicago, Illinois, is a 2017 graduate of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California. The consensus five-star recruit was rated by ESPN as the nation’s sixth-best prospect at one point during his senior year and was honored as a McDonald’s High School All-American. As a senior at Cathedral Catholic, he averaged 28.6 points, 12.6 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per game. He is the program’s first preseason conference freshman of the year since Stephen Zimmerman Jr., in 2015.

The media poll was also announced at the conference’s media summit. The Runnin’ Rebels were picked sixth and received one first-place vote.

Today also marks the start of Runnin’ Rebel Week with the free Scarlet & Gray Showcase at 7 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center. Other events include an appearance by the team at UNLV football on Saturday and the Slam Dunk Social for Ladies on Sunday. UNLV, which is in its second year under Coach Menzies, has brought in a recruiting class that has been ranked as high as No. 12 in the country. Seven new players have been added to the roster for the 2017-18 season, including McCoy and National Junior College Player of the Year Shakur Juiston. The team also returns its leading scorer from last year in senior guard Jovan Mooring.

The Runnin’ Rebels host an exhibition game at the Thomas & Mack Center Friday, Nov. 3, vs. Alaska-Fairbanks, and open the regular season Saturday, Nov. 11, vs. Florida A&M.
