UNLV‘S JOEL NTAMBWE NAMED MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Freshman forward honored by conference after recording first career double-double in win vs. BYU
UNLV freshman forward Joel Ntambwe was named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is his first career weekly honor and also the first for a Runnin’ Rebel player this season.
Originally from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, he scored a career-high 22 points in UNLV’s thrilling overtime buzzer-beating victory against BYU on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. He recorded the first double-double of his career with a game-high-tying 11 rebounds. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for UNLV.
Ntambwe sank two free throws with 27 seconds left to send the game into overtime, tied at 83. For the game, he went 6 for 8 (75 percent) from the field, including 3 for 4 (75 percent) from 3-point range. He also made 7 of 8 (87.5 percent) free throws.
The Runnin’ Rebels (5-4) will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, to compete in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic later this week. UNLV’s first game in the tournament will be against Hawaii (6-4) on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. PT (TV: ESPNU, Radio: ESPN 1100 AM). The Runnin’ Rebels will then face either Colorado (8-1) or Indiana State (6-3) on Sunday, Dec. 23 and the event will conclude with a third game on Tuesday, Dec. 25.
