GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY OVER NEXT TWO WEEKS

Feb. 5, NGWSD will be prior to the Utah State game on Feb. 15

The UNLV Lady Rebels and the UNLV Athletic Department will be hosting two special games over the next two weeks, beginning with the annual Play 4Kay breast cancer awareness game on Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Colorado State at 7 pm. UNLV will then host over 300 kids participating in the 28th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Utah State. Both games will be held in the Cox Pavilion.

Wednesday’s game against the CSU Rams is part of the national Play 4Kay initiative, the goal of which is to help raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research. All fans that wear pink to the contest will receive $2 admission (children 12 and under are free), while free pink shoelaces will be available for the first 50 fans. The team will also be raffling off specially decorated shooting shirts, selling raffle tickets on the Cox Pavilion concourse ($2 for one entry, $5 for three entries) with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow Foundation. UNLV has been selected as one of 25 schools on the West Coast by the Foundation to help build attendance and donations for the cause.

On Feb. 15 for NGWSD, players and staff from several women’s athletic teams at UNLV, including the basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball squads will be helping to run an all-sports clinic for over 300 kids (girls and boys) between 2nd and 8th grades. The clinic starts at 1:30 pm with different stations spread out over the Mendenhall Center and the practice courts at the Cox Pavilion. Following the clinic, all participants are invited to attend the UNLV Lady Rebels contest against Utah State for free, with the game starting at 4 pm in the Cox Pavilion.

NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports, starting back in 1987. The national-wide celebration is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition, and this year’s theme is “Passing the Torch, Blazing the Trail!” This year’s event at UNLV is sponsored by the UNLV Women of Excellence.
