1930 Model A Custom “Rod-Riguez” Headlines Stellar Hot Rods at Barrett-Jackson’s Annual Las Vegas Auction, June 30-July 2
Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, is set to offer an impressive selection of professionally built, custom hot rods during this year’s Las Vegas Auction, June 30-July 2, at the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Leading the custom hot rods on the docket is the 1930 Ford Model A hot rod nicknamed “Rod-Riguez” (Lot #780) that was built by renowned Japanese builder Junichi Shimodaira, owner of Paradise Road in Nagoya, Japan.
“Enthusiasts at every level have a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and creativity that are poured into these custom hot rods,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Early customizers like George Barris and Ed Roth inspired an entire new class of collectible vehicles that have become legendary through their extremely bold designs. The hot rods crossing our block in Las Vegas are examples of what happens at the intersection of iconic design, modern technology and creative genius.”
Built by famous Japanese builder Junichi Shimodaira and first shown at the 2002 Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show is a 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan nicknamed “Rod-Riguez” (Lot #780). Power comes from a stock 1949 V8 Oldsmobile Rocket engine producing 303hp mated to a Hydramatic 4-speed transmission. It is finished in a custom blend of Candy Copper with pinstriping by Japanese artist Makoto. It features a custom-made grille, which is Junichi’s trademark, and a fully custom interior with 1960s Tijuana-style cloth bucket seats.
Regarded as a founding father of Japan’s lowrider scene, Shimodaira’s “Rod-Riguez” propelled his shop Paradise Road into an international sensation in 2002. Blending hot rod, custom and lowrider styling cues, “Rod-Riguez” has become the definition of a Japanese rod. The build also played a significant role in helping propel the Japanese Kustom car scene in the early 2000s.
Lot #783 is a 1933 Ford 3-window custom coupe powered by a new crate ZZ6 405hp engine backed by a 4L60E automatic transmission. Finished in 2007 Lexus Candy Red and Champagne Gold with pinstriping by Mitch Kim, the all-steel Ford body features a 3-inch chopped top, custom rear roll pan and extended running boards. The seats and interior were custom-built by Jon Lind Interiors, featuring leather and ostrich in matching Champagne and maroon red.
“As our bidders have come to expect from Barrett-Jackson, our Las Vegas docket is going to have something for everyone,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “This includes some of the finest examples of custom hot rods that pay homage to 1930s-era American cars like the Ford Model A. Our selection will feature builds that have been touched by the master craftsmen and will be excellent additions to any collection.”
Originally built for car shows, Lot #693 is a custom Factory Five kit 1933 Ford 3-Window coupe replica. It is powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote engine with a Boss 302 air intake mated to a TREMEC 5-speed manual transmission. Featuring custom leather interior and suicide doors, the consignor states this hot rod has only 10 miles on it since the build and has placed in four of five recent national shows.
A custom 1932 Ford pickup (Lot #777.1) built by Troy Ladd and his crew at Hollywood Hot Rods will also cross the block with No Reserve. Powered by its 429ci Jon Kaase Boss Nine V8 engine, this stand-out hot rod sits on a full custom-built chassis with a custom Moal Coachbuilders suspension and a stretched wheelbase to accommodate a full-size bed with a custom steel body.
Lot #662 is a 1932 Ford 5-window coupe built by Dave Crouse’s Custom Auto shop in Loveland, Colorado. It is powered by a 427/525hp small block Dart engine backed by a TREMEC TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission. The Avion Caramel leather interior features a stock dashboard with custom Classic Instruments gauges with the tachometer mounted on the steering shaft behind the Banjo steering wheel.
