ATOMIC MUSEUM ANNOUNCES PROGRAMS, PROMOTIONS IN SEPTEMBER
The Atomic Museum announces its roster of public programs and promotions for September.

STEM Saturdays
Date: Saturday, Sept. 10
Time: Check in begins at 10 a.m.; the event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: Atomic Museum
Cost: Tickets are currently sold out for September’s STEM Saturdays event. The museum will open registration for October’s STEM Saturdays event in the coming weeks.
Description: The Atomic Museum invites middle and high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and math to its next STEM Saturday’s event in partnership with the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and the Clark County School District’s Career & Technical Education Department. This monthly event will feature STEM-themed presentations, demonstrations and Q&As led by NNSS employees. Attendees can also enjoy a complimentary lunch and a free guided tour of the museum’s main gallery.
Smithsonian Museum Day

Description: As an affiliate partner of the Smithsonian Institution, the Atomic Museum invites guests to celebrate Smithsonian Museum Day with complimentary museum admission. Smithsonian Museum Day brings together museums, zoos and cultural centers from all 50 states to offer free access. The occasion represents a national Smithsonian affiliate commitment to access, equality and inclusion by advancing the hopes and ambitions of the public, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. This year’s theme will be the American Experience.
Distinguished Lecture with Dr. Audrey M. Williams
Date: Thursday, Sept. 22

Description: Guests are invited to this exclusive distinguished lecture as Dr. Audrey Williams provides an overview of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Forensic Science Center. Dr. Williams will cover the laboratory’s history and current efforts to deter and respond to the use of weapons of mass destruction, including work to support the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons.
Speaker: Dr. Audrey Williams is the director of the Forensic Science Center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a national security community asset with twin missions to conduct innovative research and provide real-world operational support across a broad range of weapons of mass destruction forensic science. She leads a team of scientists with a variety of technical backgrounds to understand, prepare for, characterize and respond to threat events ranging across the full weapons of mass destruction spectrum, including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive scenarios.
Historical Dates in September
- Formation of the Manhattan Project: In September 1942, the Manhattan Project began to secretly build the world’s first atomic bomb.
- Rainier Shot: On September 19, 1957, the Rainier shot, the first contained underground nuclear weapons test occurred at the former Nevada Test Site producing a yield of 1.7 kilotons.
- Nuclear-Proliferation Pact Signed: On September 21, 1977, 15 countries, including the United States and the USSR, signed the Nuclear-Proliferation Pact to control the spread of nuclear weapons.
