Celebrity colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top holiday hair tips

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top tips for making the most of your time at the salon during the holidays.

  1. Forward thinking: I typically advise my clients to wait six to eight weeks for gray touch-ups and eight to 12 weeks for highlights. With this in mind and knowing that salons get incredibly busy around the holidays, schedule your holiday color appointment with as much advance notice as possible. If you are going in for “corrective color”, to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience,  be prepared for a longer visit as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.

  1. Show, don’t tell: If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken’s new Blur technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!

Shades EQ NEW

  1. When in doubt, refresh: If the holidays don’t fall in-between your scheduled color appointments or you do not have the time for a full color appointment this December, ask your colorist for a Redken Shades EQ gloss treatment to enhance shine. Healthy hair is a staple regardless of the occasion or the outfit and Shades EQ is a quick service that works wonders on hair to tone color, refresh highlights, and correct uneven tone. Another great alternative is a Redken Chemistry System in-salon treatment in-between or just before a color service for noticeable long-lasting color results and improved condition. Redken Chemistry rebuilds the hair from the inside out and allows your colorist to mix and match the systems based on your specific hair type. You can simultaneously address your hair’s frizziness while locking in your color treatment with two targeted treatments in one!

  • Maintenance is key! Between your many holiday updo’s, curling irons and flatiron run-throughs, the holidays can do serious damage to your locks! That is why at-home maintenance can be just as important as salon treatments. For blondes, it is important to balance out the brass which is where Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet for Cool Blondes comes in. The adjustable color-depositing daily conditioner is perfect for preserving tonality between salon visits. I recommend that my clients use it the day after they get their hair colored and increase the amount they use as time passes.

To make your brunette shade last longer than your New Year’s resolution, I recommend sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner or Color Extend Magnetics to help shield, stabilize and secure color intensity.

Help Homeless Kids Get a Hot Meal for the Holidays — Smith’s to Match Gift Card Donations — Several Ways to Help

Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth launches #pickupthetab

to feed homeless teens for the holidays

Online component of Plastic Food Drive to collect fast food, grocery store gift cards

Thanksgiving and Christmas can be unsettling and scary for homeless youth unable to be with family. While everyone else is enjoying a holiday feast, homeless teens are wondering when they will eat their next meal.

Smith’s Food & Drug Stores will match the first $1,000 donated in $25 gift cards purchased at Smith’s, or other grocery stores during the final week of Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth’s (NPHY) Plastic Food Drive for homeless youth.

Now in its eighth year, the drive will run through Tuesday, Nov. 25. A $5 Fast Food gift card provides one meal for a homeless teen; $10, two meals; and $25 at a grocery store provides meals for several days.

Gift cards or other donations can be delivered to the NPHY Drop-In Center, located at 4981 Shirley Street, south of Tropicana Ave. near UNLV, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

For more information about the NPHY Plastic Food Drive and the nonprofit, visit www.nphy.org/PFD or call 702-383-1332.

To make it easier for more than 9,000 Clark County homeless youth to get a hot meal during this time, the nonprofit Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) is launching its annual Plastic Food Drive and new companion #pickupthetab online component. Now in its eighth year, the drive recently began and will run through Tuesday, Nov. 25.

To meet its goal, Southern Nevada’s most comprehensive service provider for homeless teens seeks participation from community members and businesses – individually or through employee and/or customer drives – to buy $5 or $10 fast food or $25 grocery store gift cards.

“These gift cards mean no homeless youth has to go without a hot meal for the holidays,    regardless of their living situation or access to a kitchen,” said Arash Ghafoori, NPHY executive director. “A $5 gift card provides one meal for a homeless teen; $10, two meals; and $25 at a grocery store provides meals for several days. With the growing number of homeless youth in Southern Nevada, the community’s support for the Plastic Food Drive is more important this year than ever before.”

There are a number of ways to get involved with the Plastic Food Drive:

  • Purchase a $5 or $10 gift card from a fast food restaurant.
  • Purchase a $25 gift card from a local grocery store.
  • Donate online at https://www.nphy.org/donate
  • Implement an employee or customer Plastic Food Drive by calling 702-383-1332 or visiting nphy.org/PFD for information or to get started.
  • Participate in the #pickupthetab online donation campaign.
    • Go to gofundme.com/nphypickupthetab to donate $5 or $10.
    • Snap a picture of your lunch and post it on Facebook with the caption: “Did you know there are over 9,000 homeless youth in Clark County? I’m having this for lunch today, but many of these youth do not know where their next meal is coming from. I donated $__ to NPHY to #pickupthetab for the meal of a homeless youth. Now I challenge you to #pickupthetab at gofundme.com/nphypickupthetab. All funds raised will purchase food gift cards for homeless youth.”
    • Tweet: “I’m helping end homeless teen hunger. Now I challenge you to #pickupthetab at gofundme.com/nphypickupthetab
    • Tag two friends and ask them to #pickupthetab for a homeless teen.

Gift cards or other donations can be delivered to the NPHY Drop-In Center, located at 4981 Shirley Street, south of Tropicana Ave. near UNLV, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

To honor the single largest donation received for Plastic Food Drive this year, NPHY will engrave a brick with the donor or company’s name and include it in a special recognition section at the expansion of the Drop-In Center currently under construction.

For more information about the NPHY Plastic Food Drive and the nonprofit, visit www.nphy.org/PFD or call 702-383-1332.

Driving to Las Vegas This Holiday? Tim Robbins narrates Fahrenheit 451 for Audible – perfect for Thanksgiving Travel! Audiobook Review

Tim Robbins’s Performance of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 Now Available as an Audio Download at Audible.com

I just finished listening to the Audible.com classic Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit 451 narrated by Tim Robbins. It’s been about 40 years since I read this book and I don’t think I understood it well at that time. Tim Robbins is one of my favorite actors and the way he presents this book gives it a great dimensional feel and character recognition during the read. With governmental and social restrictions at an all time high this book is more relevant than it has ever been. Audible.com made this easy to download and listen to on my tablet and I easily finished it in a weekend. So if you’re traveling for the holidays get this classic or any of your favorite Ray Bradbury tales from Audible.com and enjoy. Jay Reppart – Vegas24Seven.com

Audible, Inc., the world’s largest seller and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken-word content, today announced the release of Tim Robbins’s audio interpretation of Ray Bradbury’s classic work of speculative fiction, Fahrenheit 451. This new performance by Academy Award winner Robbins is one of four definitive recordings of the Bradbury canon produced by Audible Studios in association with the Bradbury Estate. Other Bradbury titles also newly available are Something Wicked This Way Comes, narrated by Christian Rummel, and The Martian Chronicles, narrated by Mark Boyett, as well as a new recording by Jonathan Davis of the Bradbury story “The Playground,” which was part of the original hardcover edition of Fahrenheit 451. To download any of these audiobooks, visit www.audible.com/bradbury.

“I love this book. Fahrenheit 451 is such an important book in so many ways and it’s so great to revisit it,” said Robbins. “The whole format of audiobooks is, in a way, making sure that Fahrenheit 451 doesn’t happen. It’s creating another way for literature to survive. If the audiobook is heard, more people will discover what is a great book.”

“Tim Robbins’s performance of Fahrenheit 451 is further evidence of his status as one of our finest actors,” said Audible EVP and Publisher Beth Anderson. “The way this quartet of terrific acting talent breathes new life into these important works of literature makes for a multidimensional experience of Bradbury’s language—and incredible listening.”

Among the acclaimed actors who have performed other works of literature for Audible are Bryan Cranston, Dan Stevens, Dustin Hoffman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon. In 2013, Audible Studios won its first Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and also won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair.

Audible invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2013, Audible members downloaded an average of more than 17 books over the course of a year, the equivalent of close to 600 million listening hours.

Exclusive audio excerpts of these new Audible Studios Bradbury titles are available at www.soundcloud.com/audible.

Mystic Falls Park Celebrates 20 Years of Winter Wonderland at Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall

Annual tree lighting ceremony set for Wednesday, November 26
Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall will light up the celebrated winter display at Mystic Falls Park for the 20th time on Wednesday, November 26, at 5:45 p.m.“For the past 20 years, we have looked forward to starting off a holiday season of giving and celebration with this tradition, and are always so honored to share it with families from our community,” said Bill Boyd, executive chairman of Boyd Gaming.

Boyd will be joined by Sam’s Town Vice President and General Manager John Sou to flip the switch on the season’s first run of the cherished holiday show.

Each year, the pioneer-themed Mystic Falls Park Light and Water Show transforms just before Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday season. This time-honored tradition has been decking the Gambling Hall since 1994, with decorations beginning in Sam’s Town’s porte-cochère. Festive lighting and decorative snowflakes lead guests through the property to Mystic Falls Park. Garland streams, wreath-adorned lampposts, and white light and snow-covered trees fill the atrium, while Cowboy Santa takes up residence in the Park’s gazebo.  The festive décor includes fan favorites such as lighted sculpture polar bears, indoor snow and mountains of poinsettias.

Sam’s Town will be hosting the 15-minute laser light spectacular hourly throughout the holiday season, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through January 1. And from November 28 to December 23, Cowboy Santa will appear Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 8:30 p.m.

Another annual tradition is also returning as Sam’s Town once again hosts a drive for the Cell Phones for Soldiers Program.  From November 1-27, Sam’s Town will collect used cell phones, chargers and other accessories, with each donated phone providing an hour of talk time to soldiers stationed abroad. To date, the non-profit organization has distributed more than 2.5 million prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

Guests can drop off used cell phones, chargers and other accessories at the B Connected Club at Sam’s Town. All participants in the promotion will receive a two-for-one coupon for Sam’s Town’s Firelight Buffet.
