UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BEGINS LINDY LA ROCQUE ERA WEDNESDAY
Lady Rebels opens 2020-21 season against Northern Arizona in the Thomas & Mack Center
Wednesday will not only see the start of the 2020-21 season for UNLV women’s basketball, there is also a new face on the bench as Lindy La Rocque starts her first year as head coach of the Lady Rebels. The first Las Vegas native to serve at the helm of the program, she will lead the Lady Rebels into their first action of the season against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at 1:30 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center.
As COVID-19 test positivity rates have increased and community status is currently in the red category, fans are not being allowed to attend. There will be a live video stream available on the Mountain West Network, featuring the call of Ben Wilson and Rachael Porter. Wyatt Tomchek meanwhile returns as Lady Rebels radio play-by-play and will be joined by Kevaney Martin (color analyst). Both the video stream and the radio broadcast can be accessed at UNLVRebels.com.
UNLV Game Notes
♦ Wednesday marks the debut of new head coach Lindy La Rocque, the eighth head coach in UNLV Lady Rebel history as she was hired on March 16. La Rocque is the first Las Vegas native to take over as head coach of the Lady Rebels.
♦ This will mark the 10th straight year UNLV is playing its season opener in Las Vegas, and seventh in the last eight years in the Thomas & Mack Center.
♦ For the second straight season the Lady Rebels will feature a very inexperienced lineup. UNLV entered the 2019-20 campaign with just 37 total career starts from its roster. This year, the Lady Rebel roster has a total of 54 starts in Division I play. However, 53 of the 54 starts come from senior Bailey Thomas, the other 10 players have just one combined start in Division I (Anna Blount).
♦ UNLV will have just two upperclassmen on this year’s squad, Thomas and junior transfer Nia Johnson. The Lady Rebels have nine underclassmen on this year’s squad, with four freshmen and five sophomores.
