The Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit is Thursday, March 28, 2019 at The Smith Center

Southern Nevada’s Business Community Invited to the 2019 Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit

Business Leaders Encouraged To Learn About Solutions To Improve Public Education

Nevada’s economic future is directly tied to the success of the state’s public education system, the achievement of its students, as well as the availability of an educated workforce capable of meeting the demands of advancing technologies.

Southern Nevada business leaders are strongly encouraged to gain an understanding of the issues, challenges and successes of the public education system, and also learn what role the business community can play in accelerating these efforts by attending The 2019 Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The BE Engaged Summit will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with one 15 minute intermission. A continental breakfast is available prior to the event beginning at 7 a.m. Tickets are $20 and available online at The Smith Center or available at the door on the day of the event.

Now in its third year and supported by local chambers of commerce, business and community organizations, the BE Engaged Summit is presented by a group of volunteers who support increased student achievement and educational outcomes that will advance Nevada’s long-term economic growth. The event was founded by Bank of Nevada CEO John Guedry and his wife Debra, a former public school teacher.

“How the public education system is preparing students for the future workforce should be of interest to every business leader in Southern Nevada,” said John Guedry, Bank of Nevada. “Our state — and our economy — will benefit by working with educators, legislators and others to improve student achievement and ensure the region has an educated workforce able to compete with other states, other regions and countries around the world.”

BE Engaged attendees will gain a greater understanding of several programs that are increasing STEM learning among young students, and helping students see the connection between what they learn in school and possible future careers. In addition, discussions will address the efforts underway to better prepare public school students to be career or college ready at graduation.

This year, a significant portion of the event will be focused on discussions that illustrate what the business community can do to support the public school system. Presentations will include an overview of legislative actions that could benefit public schools and business objectives, and how these opportunities can be supported. In addition, business leaders will learn how companies can support the Clark County School District’s (CCSD) updated strategic plan and higher student achievement goals by adopting a school, becoming a mentor, and working to engage their employees who have students in CCSD.

Business leaders will also hear from two nonprofit organizations that are making a difference in preparing public school students for the future.

The Green Our Planet School Gardens Program has significantly increased Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) learning, and financial literacy skills among students at 160 Clark County School District elementary and middle schools.

Also, The STEM Academy’s Corporate Connections Program is giving middle school students the opportunity to see the connection between their educational performance and success in a future career. Students complete a virtual or hands-on project that is tied to curricular standards and represents problem-solving in a career in our local market. The students are then provided a certificate for competency achievement.

The 2019 Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit is sponsored by Bank of Nevada and supported by the following organizations, including: Asian Chamber of Commerce, Clark County Public Education Foundation, Clark County School District, Council for a Better Nevada, Guinn Center for Policy Priorities, Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce, Latin Chamber of Commerce, Red 7 Communications, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Squeez Marketing, Urban Chamber of Commerce, and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada. VegasPBS is the exclusive media sponsor.

The Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit will take place on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The BE Engaged Summit is organized by a volunteer group of business leaders and community members who support public education and the efforts aimed at improving student achievement while also preparing students for the future workforce. Attendees will learn about the programs that are helping accomplish these goals and will learn about opportunities to become more involved with local schools. Event tickets are available on the Smith Center website. (Pictured during the first BE Engaged Summit in 2016, L to R: Punam Mather, moderator; Mike Barton, CCSD, Diane Fearon, Former Communities in School CEO; Michael Brown, Barrick Gold; Anthony Martinez, Former Desert Oasis High School student.)

City of Las Vegas and CCSD Partner with Communities In Schools and Others to “ReInvent” Schools

City of Las Vegas and Clark County School District Partner
with Communities In Schools and Others to “ReInvent” Schools
Communities In Schools’ evidence-based model to serve as
barometer of success in the urban corridor of Clark County School District

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada has formed a unique partnership with the Clark County School District (CCSD) and the City of Las Vegas to help bring together their services, with the existing services of Las Vegas Downtown Achieves and My Brother’s Keeper, into full-service community schools. On Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, funding was approved by the City of Las Vegas to move forward with the plan.

“This is an all-important and critical time for educating our youth in Las Vegas,” Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said. “We must come together to build programs that work for all in a meaningful and positive way.”

Four elementary schools – J.T. McWilliams, Wendell P. Williams, Matt Kelly and Hollingsworth– have been dubbed “ReInvent Schools” and are the focus of this model where students, their families and the community can best be served by the wraparound services provided by these community organizations. Launched at the start of the 2016-17 school year, the initiative will focus on academic achievement, expanded learning, wraparound services and family and community engagement, with a plan to scale the model into additional underperforming urban core schools.

“We pride ourselves not only on the work that we do for the vulnerable student population here in Clark County, but the benefit our students’ success has on our community,” said Cheri Ward, executive director of CIS of Southern Nevada. “The impact that a student who feels empowered to stay in school and achieve in the classroom can have on his or her community is a powerful thing.”

CIS of Nevada provides wraparound services for nearly 60,000 students statewide and 47,800 students in Clark County alone. Recognizing that dropout prevention begins in early education, CIS of Southern Nevada currently operates in 34 elementary schools. They are also in five middle schools and eight high schools. From tutoring and class work assistance, to weekend nutrition and hygiene resources, CIS of Nevada focuses on individualized solutions to mitigate the effects of poverty that hinder a student’s ability to succeed on their path to graduation.

“The Clark County School District is so grateful to work with community partners, as it takes the assistance and dedication of all to build success,” said CCSD Chief Student Achievement Officer Dr. Mike Barton.

My Brother’s Keeper takes a collective impact approach to changing community conditions and empowering youth of color, with an emphasis on African-American boys. An initiative brought forward by President Barack Obama, Las Vegas adopted the My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge on Nov. 10, 2014, with Mayor Carolyn Goodman leading the charge.

Las Vegas Downtown Achieves seeks to improve conditions for students through collective community action so that all students are able to reach their full potential.

CIS of Nevada has been serving Nevada as the state affiliate of the nation’s leading and most effective dropout prevention and intervention program for more than 12 years. News of the CCSD graduation rate reaching 74.2 percent – in a year that saw its largest graduating class of 17,491 students – demonstrates great progress and is evidence of the value of early intervention services for the most at-risk students of Clark County. Many students attend schools with similar economic barriers to those at the newly-approved ReInvent Schools.

The CCSD graduation rate is up 2.1 percent from 2015 and a full 4.3 percent from the 70.9 percent rate in 2014. The graduation rate for students provided with wraparound support services from CIS of Nevada has remained steadily between 83 and 87 percent during that same time period. CIS of Nevada’s evidence-based model continues to be used as a prototype for districts across the nation implementing integrated student services as a means to bolster their own educational outcomes.

$1.4 Million in STEM Curriculum Gifted to Nevada Schools

$1.4 Million in STEM Curriculum Gifted to Nevada Schools

Donation Announced at Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit 2016

Middle school students at Nevada public schools will have access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM 101) curriculum, thanks to a generous gift from The STEM Academy, Inc., an internationally known and respected organization advancing economic development by improving STEM literacy to meet future workforce needs.

The donation announced during today’s Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit, came as a result of requests from leaders at Bank of Nevada and First Independent Bank, who are directly involved in statewide efforts to expand STEM curriculum and improve educational performance in Nevada. Bank of Nevada and First Independent Bank are both divisions of Western Alliance Bank.

Providing this curriculum for a three-year licensing term, and at no cost to 88 middle schools in Nevada, is a financial donation of more than $1.4 million dollars. The majority of the middle schools that will benefit from this gift, 58 facilities, are within the Clark County School District, which is the fifth largest school district in the United States.

“We believe this generous donation from The STEM Academy is a game changer for Nevada students and also illustrates what happens when business leaders get involved in education,” said John Guedry, CEO of Bank of Nevada.  “By exposing these students to STEM 101 curriculum, at a crucial time in their learning experience, we hope to trigger a long-term interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, which can put these students ahead of others in the years to come.”

In partnership with Nevada economic development offices, The STEM Academy curriculum helps to create a pipeline of future STEM-educated workers based on the state’s strategic goals and projected workforce needs. The educational framework benefits those students choosing a pathway directly into industry, as well as those who choose post-secondary advancement.  Additionally, STEM 101 curriculum  has shown to improve performance among under-represented minority and low-income students, close achievement gaps, decrease dropout rates and increase high school graduation.

“The STEM Academy is providing quality instructional materials for the next generation science standards,” said Pat Skorkowsky, Superintendent of the Clark County School District. “This gift will move Nevada middle schools toward the New Nevada.”

“STEM 101 is a tremendous gift that fits nicely into Governor Sandoval’s vision to make Nevada’s students college and career ready,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction. “STEM 101 is an extremely valuable benefit for our Nevada middle school students in the realm of STEM education whether in school, after-school or during summer programs.  With the support of our community, this program will allow 88 middle schools in Nevada to engage in collaboration with real-world settings and experiences together with an enriched instructional process that connects multiple core disciplines to bring STEM to life.”

The donated curriculum will be combined with additional funding from the State of Nevada and the Clark County School District to provide the needed accompanying materials for students, some of which can be utilized in subsequent years.

STEM 101 gift

Eighty-eight Nevada public middle schools will receive STEM 101 curriculum for free, for a three-year licensing term, thanks to a generous gift from The Stem Academy, Inc.  The gift, which is valued at more than $1.4 million dollars, was announced during the Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit 2016: Accelerating a New Nevada, an event to help get the business community engaged in supporting public education.  The Stem Academy, Inc. is an internationally known and respected organization advancing economic development by improving STEM literacy to meet future workforce needs.

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH KATHY OLIVIER KICKS OFF CCSD COACHES CHALLENGE OCT. 20

Over 10,000 students in the district will participate in the program

UNLV Women’s Basketball head coach Kathy Olivier will help the Clark County School District kick off the 8th annual UNLV Coaches Challenge, with an event on Monday, Oct. 20 at 9 am at Elise Wolff Elementary School in Henderson.

The annual Coaches Challenge is a collaborative effort between the UNLV Athletic Department, Southern Nevada Health District and the Clark County School District. The Challenge encourages grade-school children to make healthy food choices and to participate in physical activity every day. Each year, the winning classrooms receive tickets to a UNLV basketball game and the grand prize winning classrooms receive a visit from a UNLV head coach to congratulate students for their efforts. This year, 10,042 students have signed up and represent 373 classrooms across the school district.

This will be the first year that Olivier and the Lady Rebels will take the lead in the program from the UNLV side. “We love doing community service but this is a special one for us,” said Olivier. “We get to go to the schools and mentor young elementary students on how to make smart choices and good decisions, and how important it is to exercise and eat right.”

Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour, in Partnership with The Public Education Foundation, Announces “Why Reading is Magical” Essay Contest

Harrah’s Comedy-Magician Mac King and The Public Education Foundation announce an essay contest involving all Clark County School District fifth grade students. The essay challenge, “Why Reading is Magical”, will kick off this year’s Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour. The contest hopes to encourage young students’ passion for reading.

“Early on my grandfather passed along his love of books and reading,” says King. “I noticed pretty quickly that everyone I met who was a happy, successful adult loved to read. I look forward to hearing how reading makes these student’s lives magical.”

Each student is to turn in their essay by the end of Friday, October 3, to be reviewed by three judges. Once judged, three students will be selected as the first-, second-, and third-place winners. All three winning students will be given the chance to present their essays on stage with Mac King at the Vegas Valley Book Festival on Thursday, October 18, located at the Historic Fifth Street School in downtown Las Vegas. The first-place winner, along with his/her entire fifth grade class, will be awarded a trip to see The Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Harrah’s. This will include a meet-and-greet and photos with Mac King after the show.

Students can either email or mail their entries. If emailed, essays are to be sent to essay@preferredpublicrelations.com by October 3 at 11:59 p.m. If mailed, all essays are to be sent to 2630 S. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada 89146 and postmarked by October 3 at 11:59 p.m.

Launched in 2011, Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour is in its fourth year of providing reading opportunities to local elementary school students. As well as performing at various schools across the valley, Mac King has created a book drive as the heart of the Literacy Tour, collecting and distributing more than 10,000 books. These books are gathered with the goal of making sure each student in the Clark County School District has at least one book of his or her very own.

About Mac King:
Now in his 15th year of headlining afternoons at Harrah’s Las Vegas, Comedy-Magician Mac King captivates audiences as he casts out a fishing line over their heads and catches live goldfish out of mid-air, performs amazing sleights-of-hand, makes his head completely disappear in a paper bag, and renders himself invisible, all while remaining unbelievably funny. Because of his quick wit and extensive audience interaction, no two shows are alike.

Sought after worldwide, King has made television appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and all five of NBC’s “The World’s Greatest Magic” TV specials. King is consistently praised by fellow magicians. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Teller, of Penn & Teller fame, called King “The best comedy magician in Vegas. He’ll fool you with his fantastically original tricks…” His numerous accolades include “Best Las Vegas Show” in the 2012 About.com Reader’s Choice Awards. Las Vegas Review-Journal named his show the “Best Bargain Show” for ten straight years (2003-2013), “Best Family Attraction” in 2012, and “Favorite Male Las Vegan” in 2008. In 2011, he was deemed “Best Strip Headliner” in the Las Vegas Weekly’s “Best Of” Awards. King has also been voted as Magic Magazine’s “Funniest Act in Magic,” the World Magic Awards’ “Best Comedy Magician” and the Magic Castle’s “Magician of the Year.”

King, one of today’s brightest and most talented magicians, takes the stage twice daily, Tuesday through Saturday, at Harrah’s Las Vegas at 1 and 3 p.m. in the Showroom Theatre.  Tickets are between $30.00 and $45.00 plus tax.
