Review and Photos ~ Flame Steakhouse in the El Cortez

Las Vegas always wants to resurrect the downtown area so we at Vegas24Seven.com thought we should do our part too. Where better to start than at one of the oldest casinos here in the city that never sleeps. Our destination was the famous El Cortez Hotel Casino. Specifically, The Flame Steakhouse was where we were headed. A quick trip to downtown, a quick valet parking and we were in. I must say that the recent renovations made the casino/hotel very appealing and classy looking. It was nice!

We had no wait at all and went straight to a very spacious and comfortable circular booth. It was well decorated and Ray the piano player was already setting the mood for the evening with some wonderful music. It was just the right volume with just the right lighting for an intimate evening. The place even had a pleasant unique aroma that further added to the atmosphere. Even though The Flame has an extensive wine list and plenty of spirits we chose the non-alcoholic beverages as usual. That’s just how we roll. We were brought our drinks and then we met our server Linda. Linda was super friendly, charismatic and made the evening a success with her recommendations and quick wit. We had fun with her and she seemed to “gauge” us pretty quickly. It was like she knew who we were and what we wanted.

Linda recommended the Calamari Fritti and the Panko Crusted Fried Shrimp for appetizers and were brought selections of some great bread. There was cranberry bread, French bread and cheese bread. The bread was warm and the butter was tasty as well. The shrimp was very tasty with just a little kick to it. It was accompanied by honey Dijon mustard. What a portion of calamari. It was light and crisp and came with a spicy tomatoes sauce. Great way to start a meal. That’s for sure. Equally impressive was the traditional Caesar Salad and the house special Chicago style “Garbage Salad”. It was unlike any salad I’ve ever had.

For dinner we ordered the Roast Prime Rib of Beef, Filet Mignon, Porterhouse and the Tournedos of Beef Rossini. For sides we selected the Garlic Mashed Potatoes and their special Creamed Corn. Our meals arrived shortly after the salad extravaganza and YUM!!! Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. The prime rib was a generous portion, juicy and tender. The Au Jus was great. The filet just melted in your mouth and was garnished with fingerling potatoes. We love our porterhouses and definitely were not disappointed with this one. The Tournedos of Beef Rossini was a pleasant twist with two filets served on a bread bed with Pate Foie Grois and a demi-glace sauce on top. To die for. It may have been the tenderest filets I have ever eaten and the sauce was perfect for the beef/pate combo, Magnifique. We loved the potatoes and who would have thought we would be raving about creamed corn. A great dinner……. But not over yet.

Time for dessert. The Flame Steakhouse manager Christopher was a great help and recommended the Romanoff and we also ordered the Raspberry Sorbet, Fresh Baked Apple Streusel a La Mode and the Six Layer Chocolate Ganache. Ahhhhh and finished off with some espresso. What a great dining experience. We can’t wait to go back. We want to meet the chef next time, enjoy some of the famous seafood they have and some other sides and desserts. Just like Petula Clark sang “things’ will be great when you’re Downtown, no finer place for sure, Downtown”. Vegas24Seven agrees!

ABOUT FIRST FRIDAY LAS VEGAS
First Friday Las Vegas has been a mainstay of arts and culture in downtown Las Vegas for nine years. In 2011, just shy of the October nine year anniversary, the arts and culture festival welcomed a new ownership group, First Friday Las Vegas, LLC, comprised of  Zappos.com executives Tony Hsieh, Fred Mossler and Steve Hill, as well as downtown developer Andrew Donner and marketing executive Joey Vanas. The outdoor event features several areas throughout Downtown Las Vegas that showcase artists of all calibers and genres, supplementing with live music, food and other celebratory events.

First public burn to be held downtown during March 2 First Friday Las Vegas – Burn Vegas Burn

First Friday Las Vegas and Lucky Lady Lucy bring the heat to Downtown with the first public burn in Las Vegas History

Popular Las Vegas-based arts festival will fire up the crowds with March’s event ‘Burn Vegas Burn’

First Friday Las Vegas, the celebrated arts festival in downtown Las Vegas, is pairing up with the Lucky Lady Lucy team and the city of Las Vegas to hold the city’s first public burn, inspired by the annual Burning Man Festival, on Friday, March 2, 2012. Burn Vegas Burn will feature “Lucky Lady Lucy,” a 20-foot tall wooden showgirl sculpture, which will be ceremoniously blazed in the first public burn in Las Vegas history at 8 p.m.

Mirroring the spectacle featured at the Burning Man Festival, First Friday will wow the downtown crowd and give a taste of the energy and community-building that Burning Man is known for. The festivities will extend beyond First Friday and over the weekend with Art Car parades, after parties and programmed events throughout Downtown.

The March First Friday will be unlike any other festival Las Vegas has seen and “spectacle” doesn’t even begin to describe what the crew has in store. Fire art performances by Flameology, Nytronix and The Brotherhood of the Flame will bring the energy of the public burn to crowds throughout the festival.

“Burning Man is one of the most amazing yet misunderstood events in modern times. Before I went for my first time last year I shared a lot of the misconceptions that many have, but when I arrived it was immediately apparent that what takes place at that festival each year is desperately needed in societies around the world. People leave all of their differences and egos aside and come together to build a community like I have never felt – total strangers helping one another, appreciating each other’s talents and celebrating individuality and creativity. And the art is beyond your wildest imagination.” said First Friday managing partner Joey Vanas. “If it wasn’t for my experience at Burning Man we would not have taken over First Fridays – it’s actually the reason we’re here.”

Cast members from the Los Angeles-based production “The Burning Opera: How to Survive the Apocalypse” will perform during this high-energy event. The theatrical performance combines rock opera and vaudeville.

An Art Car Extravaganza  will be headlined by The Dancetronauts, a performance group that provides top-of-the-line sound system technology, world-renowned DJs, cutting-edge stage lighting and visual effects and an array of professional dancers, fire performers, artists and the infamous Dancetrohotties who will add to the evening’s festivities.

After the March 2 First Friday event, the Plaza Hotel will host an Art Car party with the Dancetronauts as well as the world’s most unique and artfully designed vehicles. Following the Art Car event the after-party will move into the Plaza Theatre where guests can dance into the wee hours of the morning.

On Saturday, March 3 in El Cortez’ Jackie Gaughan Parkway, the Dancetronauts and other art cars will be at it again with performances from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. before party-goers make their way to the bars and clubs of Fremont East.

Hotel packages are available; please visit www.firstfridaylasvegas.com for package details. There are a limited amount of rooms packaged for this event; first-come, first-served.

For a video sneak peak at the March First Friday Las Vegas event, please check the website www.firstfridaylasvegas.com or find First Friday on Facebook www.facebook.com/firstfridaylasvegas.

A fundraising event to help build “Lucky Lady Lucy” will be held at InsertCoin(s) on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m. Donations can also be made online at www.Indiegogo.com/LuckyLadyLucy.

Street Food Throwdown

El Cortez Hotel & Casino will host a “Vintage Vegas Foods” Street Food Throwdown on East Fremont Street Friday, July 29 at 8 p.m.

At the event, local street vendors and food trucks will compete to create classic dishes inspired by El Cortez’s Vintage Dining Menu. The event is fueled by the popularity of El Cortez’s Vintage Menu and stellar reputation for having the premier street vendors and food trucks in downtown Las Vegas. El Cortez has quickly become downtown Las Vegas’ hotspot for food trucks due to the success of the monthly Vegas StrEATs festival and the property’s Midweek Much event.

There will be multiple food trucks competing in the event to see who can create the best vintage-inspired dish using El Cortez’s Vintage Menu as the model for their new creations. Bartenders from the El Cortez will also be on hand to stir up drinks from the property’s popular Vintage Cocktail Menu.

El Cortez introduced their Vintage Dining and Vintage Cocktail Menus in 2011 to celebrate the property’s 70th anniversary.  The dining menu draws on classic recipes from around the Las Vegas Valley, including dishes from Sultan’s Table at the Dunes, Delmonico’s at the Riviera, The House of Lords at the Sahara, La Vie en Rose at the Desert Inn and Saver Room at the Aladdin.  The cocktail menu features classic cocktails such as the side car, the mint julep, the blood and sand and the aviation – some of which originated as early as the 1700s.

El Cortez Hotel & Casino Hosts Classic Car Show Fourth of July Weekend

El Cortez Hotel & Casino Hosts Classic Car Show Fourth of July Weekend

El Cortez Hotel & Casino will celebrate Independence Day weekend with a classic car show, live bands and delicious eats from Engine 1 Pizza at the Jackie Gaughan Parkway on Sunday, July 3 from 1 to 6 p.m.

The free event is open to the public and will showcase approximately 60 American-made, classic cars, courtesy of Ultracar LTD, Inc., with five of the vehicles open to guests for photo opportunities both inside and outside the car. In true “vintage Vegas” fashion, El Cortez will also have a 1963 pink Cadillac on display with an Elvis impersonator behind the wheel for photo opportunities.

“As we continue to celebrate our 70th anniversary, we felt that a classic car show in downtown Las Vegas would really generate the vintage spirit we are embracing at El Cortez,” said El Cortez General Manager Mike Nolan. “Downtown Las Vegas was once a hub for these types of events and we hope to build that identity once more in the Fremont East District.”

While the cars will provide plenty of visual pleasantries, two live bands will keep the energy going throughout the day as well. Ryan Whyte Maloney Band is an inspiring local country band trying to break the modern country music mold with infectious melodies and touching songwriting. They will be followed by the Freddie Eckstein Group which provides a unique jazz experience that is sure to have guests tapping their feet and ready to dance along with the smooth rhythms.

In addition to a cash bar serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, Engine 1 Pizza will be on location throughout the day with their delicious menu selections available for purchase. The mobile pizza oven is well known for their custom pizzas, which are handmade with fresh ingredients, such as the basil used in their legendary homemade pesto. The Engine 1 menu includes classic pizzas, artisan pizzas, breaded mozzarella sticks, breaded zucchini sticks, seasoned sweet potato fries, breaded mushrooms and boneless Buffalo wings.

Dining and Cocktail Menus in Honor of 70th Anniversary

El Cortez Hotel & Casino continues the celebration of its storied past by introducing vintage dining and cocktail menus in honor of its 70th anniversary.

Throughout 70 years, El Cortez has gone through several menu overhauls at its dining establishments. To fuel guests’ excitement for the anniversary, the historic hotel-casino has decided to dust off some of Las Vegas’ old recipe books and reintroduce a few classic favorites. The cocktail menu will celebrate the history of mixology by educating guests on the origins of classic cocktails while offering a chance for them to enjoy their favorites. The menu will include cocktails such as the side car, which originated in the 1920s during World War I; the mint julep, which originated in the 1700s and is one of the country’s oldest cocktails; the blood and sand, a drink from the 1930 premiere of a Rudolph Valentino film; and the aviation, a drink created in the 1910s by the head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York.
