WHAT: The Las Vegas Heart Ball is the major event of the American Heart and Stroke Association designed to bring awareness and benefit to children’s heart and stroke research, public education, and community programs. Seventy-five cents of every dollar raised stays in Southern Nevada to fund life-saving research and implementing programs that directly support the mission of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

Workforce Connections Announces Nevada Day Super Hiring Event on October 25, 2017 at Boulevard Mall

More than 70 employers to interview qualified candidates

Workforce Connections’ One-Stop Career Center, in partnership with the Las Vegas Review Journal, will hold the Nevada Day Super Hiring Event on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Boulevard Mall, 3538 Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas 89169, with the goal of placing qualified job candidates into new careers. The hiring event will open to the public at 10 a.m.

More than 70 employers such as Allegiant Travel Company, City of Las Vegas, Keolis, MGM Resorts International, Montevista Hospital, Simon Event Group, Tesla, UPS and more will have thousands of open jobs in career fields like health care, IT, manufacturing and hospitality. Employers will interview potential hires on-site during the event. There is no cost to the job seeker or employer to participate.

“The Nevada Day Super Hiring Event helps job seekers get critical face-to-face interaction with employers that can result in a hire,” said Kenadie Cobbin Richardson, Workforce Connections director of business engagement and communications. “We know Nevada is a great place to live and work. There are jobs available. Our mission is to create a ready workforce and connect job seekers with opportunities.”

The Eric Trump Foundation will host the third annual Zumbathon at Town Square Park on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9-11 a.m. With all proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the family-friendly event will put the “fun” in fundraising. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased here.

A chance meeting between a local baseball executive and pediatric cancer patient 25 years ago set in motion the biggest local fundraiser for children with cancer and their families and the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada. Called the 25th Anniversary Superhero 5K with Chet Buchanan this year to commemorate the quarter-century milestone, the race, one-mile walk and companion activities will be Saturday, Sept. 12 at Exploration Park at the Mountain’s Edge Master Planned Community, 9600 South Buffalo Drive, just south of Blue Diamond Road.

 

The event has grown from 75 people raising $1,000 in 1990 to more than 2,000 people raising more than $170,000. It also now includes costumes; kids activities with an inflatable obstacle course, bounce house and games; bone marrow drive hosted by Be The Match©; 5K awards ceremony; food and refreshments; raffle prizes; 25th anniversary commemoration; and more.

 

The race has remained dear to founder Mark Grenier, who has remained its chairman and biggest cheerleader and recruiter. Now an executive with CBS Radio, he invites participation by forming a team, running the 5K or strolling during the one-mile walk, making a costume, or coming out to support family, friends and those making a difference in lives of children and families living with cancer.

 

The seed for the race was planted in 1984 when Grenier’s father passed away at 51 from prostate cancer, and he and his siblings agreed to do something for cancer to commemorate their dad. A few years later, he met 9-year-old Jared, who was recovering from brain surgery caused by cancer, when Grenier worked for the Las Vegas Stars (now 51s) and brought players and the team mascot to Jared’s baseball game. They remained close until Jared passed away a year later. Grenier had been running marathons and subsequently organized the benefit run to support Candlelighters which had helped Jared and his family.

 

As Jared was Grenier’s inspiration, Dace Ash Davis and Keenan Bly are this year’s Superhero Ambassadors. Dace, 5 years old, has chemotherapy every day and continues to impress family and friends with his courage and strength as he battles Leukemia. Keenan, was almost 8 years old when he passed away from rare form of liver cancer in 2007. He still inspires those who knew him, and is the race’s Super Angel Ambassador.

 

Event day registration begins at 6:30 a.m.; the race and walk start at 8:15 a.m.; and festivities continue until noon. After earning 50 cents for his first performance when he was 13 years old, Turner was smitten with show business, and by age 19 he was traveling the country as a frontman with various show bands. As a solo artist, Turner scored a Top 40 dance hit in Europe in the mid-1980s with “Love Caught You By Surprise.”

A renowned Las Vegas stage veteran, Turner has appeared at numerous resorts and showrooms on and off the Strip. In 2004, Harrah’s New Orleans transformed the Mansion Ballroom into The Earl Turner Theatre, where he performed for two years.

Rebels bring in a total of three high school players and one JC transfer

The top-scoring high school player in Nevada state history highlights the four-member signing class for the UNLV men’s soccer team for the fall of 2014, head coach Rich Ryerson announced on Friday.

All three high school players hail from the Las Vegas area, beginning with Danny Musovski, a 6-0 forward for Liberty High and a Henderson native. Named both the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year and the Las Vegas Review-Journal Soccer Athlete of the Year following his junior season, Musovski set both the Nevada high school (large-school) single-season (58) and career records (128) for goals. He received All-Southern Nevada, All-Sunrise Region and All-Southeast League honors as a senior while also being named the Southeast League Player of the Year. Musovski, who chose the Rebels over Northwestern and Washington, has been a member of both Heat FC and the Las Vegas Sports Academy, winning multiple state cup titles. Musovski will also be the recipient of the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship at UNLV for the 2014-15 academic year.

Next is Edgar Duran, a 5-8 midfielder from Las Vegas. He played for El Dorado High and helped the Sundevils to the state championship this past season, while earning All-Southern Nevada, All-Sunrise Region and All-Southeast League honors. He was also selected to play in the 2013 Boys High School All-American game played in Downingtown, Pa., in December. Duran is also a member of the Vegas United Limon club team, while also making an appearance on the US Soccer youth National Team roster.

The final recruit is Oscar Velazquez of North Las Vegas, who graduated from SECTA in Henderson in 2013 before spending the past year with Chivas USA in Los Angeles in the Development Academy League, the highest youth league in the country. While at SECTA, he was named All-Southern Nevada and All-Sunrise League while leading the Roadrunners to a state championship his senior year. Velazquez earned his spot on Chivas USA after becoming a Sueño MLS finalist, which is a national competition to identify the best undiscovered amateur soccer players in the nation.

Portland, Ore., native Matthew Paine comes from national junior college power Yavapai College. He played forward for the Rough Riders for the past two years, including starting and serving as team captain last year. He helped the team to an 18-3-6 record in the fall of 2013 while leading them to a third-place finish at the national tournament, along with a district championship and a repeat regional title. Paine played his prep career at Centennial High in Gresham, Ore., and led the Eagles to a pair of conference championships. He was a three-team first team all-league selection, while setting a school record with 32 goals his senior year. He was also a three-year member of the baseball team as a pitcher, earning first-team all-league honors as a junior. A member of Man United, he helped the club team to the state cup title in 2012.

“This is the strongest class that has been recruited to the UNLV men’s soccer program in recent memory,” said Ryerson. “We have the best attacking player ever from the state of Nevada, we have a national team member, a Sueño finalist, and all from local high schools. In addition we have a junior college transfer from a traditional soccer power, while only losing a total of three players off last year’s squad. I feel very confident these players will carry the torch from the players that have left.”

Walker Furniture’s 20th Annual “Home for the Holidays” Program

HELP of Southern Nevada reminds members of the community that know of a local family in need of new furniture to submit a letter to Walker Furniture’s “Home for the Holidays” program before the Dec. 1 deadline. Now in its 20th year, the “Home for the Holidays” program pairs 28 local families with new furniture in time for the holiday season.  HELP of Southern Nevada contributes their services to the program by using expertly trained staff to identify which nominated families display the most genuine need for the furnishings.

Anyone with a family or individual in mind should submit their story to company president, Larry Alterwitz for consideration. Nominations can be mailed to Larry Alterwitz, CEO (Walker Furniture/ 301 S. Donations of frozen turkeys and fixings will be accepted from Nov. 21 to 23 at three Smith’s Food & Drug Store locations: 7130 N. Durango Drive on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; 10616 S. Eastern Avenue on Friday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and 9851 W. Charleston Boulevard on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those wishing to donate money online can do so by visiting www.helpsonv.org and writing “Thanksgiving” in the subject line on the donation page. 15th Annual 98.5 KLUC Chet Buchanan & The Morning Zoo Toy Drive

Now in its 15th year, Chet Buchanan & The Morning Zoo will host a toy drive at 6226 W. Sahara Avenue with Chet living on the 30-foot scaffolding throughout the entire drive. After the drive, HELP of Southern Nevada will distribute the toys to more than 3,000 families in need.

 

Volunteers are needed Wednesday through Sunday evenings during the drive, with each shift running from midnight to 6 a.m. Those interested in volunteering or in need of more information should contact Joan Lima at jlima@helpsonv.org.

Life is Beautiful Festival has wrapped up its inaugural weekend with an impressive 60,000 in attendance, who successfully enjoyed two full days of non-stop music, food, art and learning.

Parking and Shuttle Passes Are Now Available for Purchase

Life is Beautiful Festival announced today the official schedule and detailed map for the first-ever music, food, art and learning festival in Downtown Las Vegas.  The two-day festival, which will take place Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th, 2013, expects to attract tens of thousands of people to Downtown Las Vegas.

Spanning more than 15 city blocks across Downtown Las Vegas, the Life is Beautiful Festival footprint highlights include five musical stages; two chef demonstration stages; The Culinary Village, themed after a Moroccan Bazaar; The Alchemy Gardens, dedicated to craft cocktails; Art Odyssey, a former motel transformed into a pop-up gallery space; Over 12 murals created by international street artists.

“At the beginning, we said that Life is Beautiful would be a completely new generation festival and, as you’ll see from the schedule & map, we believe we’ve delivered,” said festival co-founder Rehan Choudhry.  “With an unprecedented lineup of music, food, booze, speakers, theatrical performances and street art, we’ve created something we hope fans will be prideful of for years to come.”

Official parking and shuttle pass options are available for advance purchase beginning at 12PM PST for the below locations via ticketmaster.com.  Passes are only valid to and from the selected location at the time of purchase. The Life is Beautiful Festival’s main entrance is located on 6th Street and Carson Avenue.

Parking passes including are $39.50 (in advance) per vehicle and include round-trip shuttle rides for vehicle passengers to and from the festival all weekend. If still available, passes will be sold for $40.00 per vehicle onsite during the festival weekend.

Non-profit Partners Activate “Charity Lane” at Life is Beautiful Festival 

Six charity partners to set up immersive goodwill experience, Oct. 26 & 27

 

On October 26 and 27, 2013, a portion of the Life is Beautiful Festival grounds will transform into a beacon of goodwill, with the launch of Charity Lane. Six worthy causes – charity: water, Three Square Food Bank, Communities In Schools of Nevada, To Write Love On Her Arms, Love Hope Strength and Mama Hope (Stop the Pity), – will execute creative and engaging activations for festival-goers who want to give back. Additionally, the festival will fundraise for said charities and make history as the first event of its kind to employ a location-based mobile donation site via Modern Giver.

As the festival’s exclusive donation medium, Modern Giver will offer fast, remote, and instant contributions to participating nonprofits (no cash, app or download needed).  To contribute, individuals can simply visit ModernGiver.com on their smartphone, choose one of the Life is Beautiful partner charities, and donate using their credit or debit card. Life is Beautiful is the first ever festival to leverage location-based mobile donations via Modern Giver to benefit partnering charities.

Within the festival itself, attendees can interact with the six chosen nonprofits in a portion of the grounds, called Charity Lane. Charity Lane will offer educational and interactive demonstrations from participating charities with far-reaching causes, benefitting local, national and international communities:

charity: water: charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. Festival goers will be able to partake in the organization’s “water walk” which gives them a hands-on feel for what people without fresh, clean water go through.

Three Square Food Bank: Established in 2007, Three Square Food Bank helps offer wholesome, nutritious food to nearly 100,000 Southern Nevadans each month. Three Square will be hosting a “backpack packing” session where festival goers can fill a bag full of food. The bags will support Three Square’s “BackPack for Kids” program which assists more than 275 schools with up to 5,000 children receiving supplemental weekend meals each week.

Communities in Schools of Nevada: Communities In Schools of Nevada supports nearly 33,000 students at 43 schools throughout the state, surrounding low-income, high-risk students with a community of support and the resources they need to succeed. They will be showcasing thought provoking imagery and items, including worn and tattered shoes, shining a light on the struggles underprivileged Nevadan school children face every day.

To Write Love On Her Arms: To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and help for those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA invite attendees to share their biggest fears and greatest dreams via provided cards. The cards are posted all over the booth for everyone to see.

Love Hope Strength:  Love Hope Strength turns concerts into lifesaving events, through their GET ON THE LIST campaign, in which they register marrow donors from concerts around the world. Love Hope Strength will be activating their now famous GET ON THE LIST “Marrow Drive” at Life is Beautiful.  Festival attendees can register to be marrow donors via a simple free cheek swab and registration form that may help save the life of someone around the globe with cancer.

Mama Hope (Stop The Pity): Stop The Pity is a movement that tells a new story about poverty, focusing on potential, not pity. Mama Hope will be giving life to their Stop The Pity campaign by setting up a video booth and asking people “How do you make life beautiful?”. The answers will be compiled and shared with the African villages the Stop The Pity movement supports.
