MGM RESORTS INTERNATIONAL GEARS UP FOR ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MARATHON LAS VEGAS
For marathon runners, dramatic landscapes and backdrops can make those grueling miles more bearable – and what better setting than a beautiful fall evening among the famous glittering lights of Las Vegas?
On November 17, the renowned Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon returns to Sin City and courtesy of MGM Resorts International, runners can enjoy a variety of pre- and post-run experiences. From carb loading and stretching the day before to relaxing in a luxurious spa after, race activities extend well beyond those 26.2 miles.
Where to Stay
Proper rest is essential to overall well-being and guests can guarantee a good night’s sleep in a Stay Well RoomS at MGM Grand which features 17 health and wellness elements throughout each room. Blissful slumber is promised through EMF protection that shields guests from sleep-disruptive electromagnetic fields and black-out shades that block outdoor lighting. The LED dawn simulator alarm clock awakens the body gradually to eliminate grogginess on race day and the air purification system will keep racer’s lungs ready by reducing allergens, toxins and pathogens. When it’s time to clean up post-race, the Vitamin C infused shower promotes healthy hair and skin, leaving guests feeling rejuvenated.
Where to Prep
Yoga can be a great addition to any athlete’s training regimen and thanks to Vdara Hotel & Spa in partnership with Lululemon, runners can strike a pose with The Official Rock ‘n’ Roll Pre-Race Yoga Session, an outdoor event that will leave participants feeling relaxed, flexible and mentally ready for Sunday’s arduous trek. Beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov.16, anyone interested is invited to Vdara’s pool deck for a one-hour Vinyasa Flow yoga class tailored for runners but open to all fitness levels. Healthy snacks and refreshments will be available along with live music. Interested participants are encouraged to RSVP at http://twtvite.com/yogarunvegas – reservations are not mandatory. Admission is free, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Athletes know that eating properly is integral to optimum performance and The Mirage Hotel & Casinowill offer the fuel runners need to keep their bodies working like well-oiled machines. California Pizza Kitchen, Carnegie Deli and BLT Burger will feature runner’s menus or participants can enjoy 50 percent off Cravings Buffet November 16 – 18 with their marathon credentials.
The Official Rock ‘n’ Roll Pasta Party at The Mirage will allow racers to “carb up” the evening prior to the marathon, ensuring they have the energy to get them through the race. On Saturday, Nov. 16, the feast will feature eight double-sided buffets of runner-friendly food such as salad, whole grain rolls and pasta, including gluten-free options, that can be topped with a choice of meat and/or vegan sauces. Rounding out the dinner with live music, The Mirage hopes to provide an evening that will satisfy the body, mind and soul. The event will be hosted in The Mirage Event Center and tickets can be purchased for $30 by visiting the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon website.
The Pre-Race Brunch, also in The Mirage Event Center, is a competitor-approved gourmet meal that ensures the body is properly nourished all the way to the finish line. Starting at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, runners can enjoy entertainment with friends and family before taking on the Las Vegas Strip that night. Tickets must be picked up at the Pasta Party/Brunch booth at the Health & Fitness Expo on Friday or Saturday of race weekend.
Where to Revitalize
After a rewarding, albeit exhausting journey through Las Vegas, there is no better way to decompress and begin healing than with a relaxing spa experience.
Spa Bellagio will stay open until midnight so competitors can head straight to the massage room or wet areas to begin the recovery. Racers can benefit from a 50-minute Marathon Custom Massage ($160), a personalized session that combines pressure and technique, or a 20-minute Mini-Marathon Refresher Massage ($85) which focuses only on the areas that need rejuvenation. The 80-minute Athlete Revival ($250) is a custom sports treatment that combines stretching and massage to all major muscle groups followed by a Cryoderm gel application that soothes and calms tissue. Spa Bellagio also will offer race day spa passes for $50 or a three-day pass for $70.
The Mirage Spa will feature special treatments for marathon participants November 16 -18. The Runner’s Relief Pedicure ($80) soothes tired soles with a ginger salt soak while the Glute Fatigue Massage ($80 for 25 minutes or $130 for 50 minutes) stretches and targets exhausted extremities. Runners also can opt for the Muscle Marathon Meltdown ($260) – a 110-minute treatment available for those requiring a little extra TLC.
Lucky’s Race & Sports Book at the Riviera Hotel & Casino offers the only walk-up wagering window on the Las Vegas Strip. During this weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon, runners were able to take a few short steps from their race to place bets at the window.
In this photo, John and Stacey Stuart from Colorado had been told about the window from a friend prior to the race. The couple walked up to the window, place their bets, and were back on the course in a matter of minutes.
Lucky’s Race & Sports Book is open at the Riviera Mondays – Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Fridays from 8:30 a.m. – midnight, Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.
