The Venetian® and The Palazzo® Las Vegas Ring in the Year of the Goat
with Traditional Lion Dance and Firecrackers

The Venetian and The Palazzo welcomed the Year of the Goat on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, with a traditional lion dance and eye ceremony. Mr. Sheldon Adelson, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corporation, along with his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson were in attendance to paint the eyes of the dragon and ceremoniously bring it to life, kicking off Chinese New Year 2015.

Also in attendance to usher in the new year were president and COO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., Rob Goldstein, president and COO of The Venetian, The Palazzo, and Sands Expo, John Caparella; president of international marketing, Larry Chiu; and senior vice president of operations, Pete Boyd.

Dancers from the Yau Kung Moon Lion and Dragon Dance Team from Los Angeles and San Francisco paraded through both properties, blessing the baccarat salons in the casinos. The colorful event featured a parade of dancers and drummers dressed in authentic costumes who made their way through The Waterfall Atrium of The Palazzo to bring good luck throughout 2015.

Other celebratory visuals include a “Year of the Goat” display inside The Waterfall Atrium & Gardens of The Palazzo.  To commemorate the “Year of the Goat” the resort’s floral and horticulture department partnered with a team of artisans, and consulted with a feng shui master, to produce the massive “Year of the Goat” art installation. Because the “Year of the Goat” also celebrates sheep and ram, the art display features beautifully sculpted figures of each. Guests are encouraged to revel in the enchanting beauty of this display when strolling through The Waterfall Atrium & Gardens of The Palazzo.

In addition, guests can also marvel at the 58 traditional I Ching coins, representing fortune and wealth, which sit among the mountain of the main art installation. The Chinese symbols on the coins read, “may your happiness be according to your wishes,” and the reverse of the coin reads, “live as long as the tortoise and the crane.” According to custom, it is suggested that guests walk clockwise around the feature display three times to bring blessings of heaven, earth, and mankind upon them.

This year’s “Year of the Goat” art installation features:

  • 3 unique hand-sculpted, life-size rams
  • 8 hand-sculpted sheep adorned with fleece of fresh carnations
  • 6-foot hand-loomed brocade silk and jade and red and gold lanterns
  • 58 I Ching coins
  • 8 Bamboo Trees
  • 28 Tangerine Trees
  • 2,400 selected plants including
    • Phalaenopsis orchids
    • Cymbidium orchids
    • Kalanchoe
    • Hyacinth

The Year of the Goat art installation will run through March 9.

THE VENETIAN AND THE PALAZZO ENDS WAITING LIST FOR
VETERAN CARE THROUGH DONATION TO UNLV DENTAL CLINIC

Pete Boyd, SVP of Operations, Ceremoniously ‘Ripped Up’ Waiting List;
Presented $70,000 Check for Supplies and Services

The team members of The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo presented a check for $70,000 today to The Sgt. Clint Ferrin Dental Clinic for Veterans at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine to effectively eliminate the waiting list of low-income Las Vegas veterans who are waiting for dental services.

The donation was made by Sands Cares, the Las Vegas Sands Corp. global corporate citizenship program, to expedite dental treatment for veterans seeking services at the innovative dental clinic.

The presentation was made by Pete Boyd, senior vice president of operations, The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo, and accepted by Karen P. West, DMD, MPH, dean of the UNLV School of Medicine.  Team Members from The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo and a current patient of the Ferrin Dental Clinic for Veterans were on hand to ceremoniously “rip up” the waiting list.

“When we asked our team members at The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo specifically what causes they would like to see us support in the community, veterans charities were very high on the list,” said Boyd.  “So when we learned about the great work that the UNLV School of Dental Medicine was doing – and that they had a waiting list for dental services for veterans — we thought this was the perfect opportunity to make a difference in our community.”

The Sgt. Clint Ferrin Dental Clinic for Veterans at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine was started in honor of a former student, John Ferrin’s, older brother who was killed in action in 2004. John watched his older brother struggle to receive proper dental care for an oral injury that he had sustained during basic training. Following his brother’s death, John was inspired to provide an avenue for local veterans, who otherwise have limited or no access to care, a place to be treated for free.

Today, the Clinic is run as a regular clinic ten times per year offering a full range of services from root canals, tooth extractions and dentures. Veterans who make less than $25,000 a year, have no current dental insurance, and who do not qualify for Veteran’s Administration benefits are invited to become patients. These veterans are much less likely to have access to dental care services than their peers in other demographics and have often not seen a dentist in many years.

Operating since 2008, this is the only such clinic in existence at an American dental school.

Those interested in receiving treatment at future clinics can call Gil Manzano at 702-774-2461

The Venetian® and The Palazzo® Las Vegas Honored with
Several Prestigious Awards in 2014

The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas have received several accolades during the New Year. In January, the properties received the following notable honors, including:

• Travel + Leisure (World’s Top 500 Hotels in 2014 for The Palazzo)
• Condé Nast Traveler (Gold List 2014 for The Palazzo)
• Condé Nast Traveler (Top 50 Hotel Spas 2014 for The Venetian)
Forbes Travel Guide (Four-Star Hotel for The Venetian and The Palazzo)
U.S. News & World Report (Best Hotels 2014 for The Venetian and The Palazzo)

“We are truly honored to receive these distinguished awards,” said John Caparella, president and COO of The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo. “These honors are a testament to the personal attention and level of service our team members offer every single day. From a collection of award-winning restaurants, entertainment and shopping, to distinctive amenities, our guests receive these unparalleled experiences all in one spectacular location.”

To be acknowledged in Travel + Leisure’s prestigious World’s Best Hotels, the magazine requires a property to go above and beyond guest expectations. The awards are determined following a survey completed by magazine’s readers. The World’s Best Awards hotel rankings are based on readers’ ratings in five categories: rooms/facilities, location, service, restaurants/food and value.

Chosen from cruises, resorts, and hotels around the world, Condé Nast Traveler 500-member Gold List is the result of nearly 80,000 Condé Nast Traveler readers’ participation in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice survey. Weighing accommodations, service, perks, details, sights, dining, and amenities, the Gold List is truly a global representation of quality and elite status. In addition, the Condé Nast Traveler 2014 Readers Poll included the list of the top 50 favorite hotel spas, as chosen by the magazine’s readers and editors.

Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Hotels provide a distinctive setting, and guests will find many interesting and inviting elements to enjoy. Attention to detail is prominent throughout the property, from design concept to quality of products provided. Staff is accommodating and takes pride in catering to your specific needs throughout your stay.

U.S. News & World Report 2014 Best Hotels recognize hotels that were ranked based on an unbiased methodology that includes the collective opinion of travel experts and guests, expressed through online reviews and ratings. To create this year’s rankings, U.S. News factored in the prominence of industry awards a hotel receives along with its reputation among travel experts and guests. In total, 1,693 U.S. hotels, 271 Caribbean hotels, 342 Mexican hotels and 223 Canadian hotels were evaluated for the 2014 rankings. Hotels named “Best” in their destination are typically the properties that have ranked the top 30 percent of U.S. News-evaluated properties in that region.

Local Youth Invited to Celebrate the Start of New School Year and the Unveiling of New Teen Center at Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club, Courtesy of Sands Expo

On Monday, August 19 at 1PM at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club, a celebration of the end of summer and start of the school year, as well as the debut of a brand new teen center, will take place.  The event will introduce local youth to this new space within the facility that was revamped by team members of Sands Expo, as one of its community outreach initiatives.

Hosted by Sands Expo, the party will feature Jason Lema, resident DJ for the TAO Group, LAVO and Marquee nightclubs in Las Vegas, who is excited to perform and volunteer his talents for this great cause. Delicious bites will be provided by Panda Express.

“I am amazed by the level of commitment and enthusiasm the Sands Expo team has for this project,” states Ashlyn LaPorte, Executive Director of Sands Expo. “We have staff who either grew up attending a Boys and Girls Club or whose children are spending time at a Club today, so for many of us this has been a personal calling.  I’m equally proud of the fact that partners like Freeman, Encore Productions and Frazee Paint were so quick to join in.  When you include TAO and other local businesses supporting the opening event, it shows how a collective effort can really impact one of the most valuable parts of the community – our children.”

In addition to hosting the party, Sands Expo is the main reason the new teen space exists. This past April, Sands Expo reached out to the Lied Boys and Girls Club to see if there was a need for support, or areas within the facility that needed some special attention. It was determined that a teen center would be the best suited and most anticipated option for the 2,000 square foot unused space within the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club.

Sands Expo donated items ranging from furniture and foam core for creating artwork, to white boards and cork boards. To supplement efforts, Sands Expo also facilitated and coordinated the donations of paint and supplies from Frazee, carpet from Freeman, and books from the Teacher Exchange Program. Sands Expo team members also volunteered in the creation of the space by painting and raising funds to pay for the carpet installation.

The Lied Boys and Girls Club is located at 2850 S. Lindell Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89146. For more information, please visit http://www.bgclv.org/.
