UNLV MEN’S GOLF TO CONCLUDE FALL SEASON IN GEORGIA


Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate set for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 20-22

The UNLV men’s golf team will conclude its fall season this weekend at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, which will be played at The Golf Club of Georgia’s Lakeside Course (par 72, 7,017 yards) in Alpharetta, Ga., Friday-Sunday, Oct. 20-22.

THE FIELD: The 15-team field has five of the nation’s top-10 teams, eight of the top 25 and 13 of the top 50 (Golfweek/Sagarin rankings): Clemson, Duke, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Georgia Tech (host), Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, UCLA, UNLV, Virginia and Wake Forest.

THE FORMAT: The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of 18 holes each day.

TEE TIMES: Pairings for Friday and Saturday will be set in advance and begin at 9 a.m. ET off both No. 1 and No. 10 holes. Sunday’s final-round pairings will be set by 36-hole scores.

THE LINEUP: Competing for UNLV will be senior Shintaro Ban, junior Harry Hall, freshman Jack Trent, sophomore Justin Kim and freshman J.J. Gresco.

LAST YEAR: UNLV did not compete at the event last year. Virginia and Texas both tied for team title in 2016 at 8-under 856, while Virginia’s Jimmy Stanger and Oklahoma’s Max McGreevy tied for medalist honors at 9-under 207.

NAME CHANGE: The event was previously known as the United States Collegiate Championship until last fall, when it was changed to the present title.

THIS YEAR: This will be UNLV’s fifth and final tournament of the fall. The Rebels have turned in two fourth-place finishes this season. Ban is coming off his second career individual title as he tied for first at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama on Oct. 10.

NO. 23 UNLV MEN’S GOLF TO PLAY IN TUCSON THIS WEEKEND

National Invitational Tournament will be held Friday-Sunday, March 14-16

The No. 23 UNLV men’s golf team is in Tucson, Ariz., for the National Invitational Tournament, which will be played at Omni Tucson National Golf Club’s Catalina Course (par 72, 7,094 yards) on Friday-Sunday, March 14-16.

The 14-school, 54-hole tournament will consist of 18 holes played each day beginning at 8 a.m. MT. This year’s field is made up of Arizona, California, Marquette, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, San Diego, San Diego State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.

The Rebels’ lineup includes junior Kurt Kitayama, junior Carl Jonson, sophomore AJ McInerney, freshman Taylor Montgomery and sophomore Zane Thomas. Freshman Chris Tuulik will compete as an individual. UNLV finished ninth (out of 16 teams) at last year’s NIT at 5-over 869. New Mexico won the team title by one shot at 20-under, while individual medalist honors were captured by TCU’s Julien Brun by a stroke at 8-under. Kitayama was the Rebels’ top finisher as he tied for 22nd at even par.

UNLV is coming off its second victory of the season, a team win at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas on March 9. Golfweek named UNLV its National Team of the Week after the win at the prestigious tournament, which annually features one of the toughest fields in college golf. Last weekend’s event included seven of the top-10 ranked teams in the country. In addition, 11 of the 15 teams competing were ranked in the top 20 and all participants were among the nation’s top 50. The field also featured 20 of the top-30 ranked individuals.

The victory was UNLV’s second in three years at the event, fifth in the last seven and seventh in the last 10. Kitayama tied for second individually, while Jonson also finished in the top-10 in a tie for eighth.

UNLV MEN’S GOLF IN FLORIDA TO CLOSE OUT FALL SEASON

Rebels will play at Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 20-22

 The UNLV men’s golf team will close out its fall season at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, which is being held at Isleworth Golf and Country Club (par 72, 7,387 yards) in Windermere, Fla., Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 20-22.

Hosted by UCF and Texas Tech, the 15-team field also includes Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida State, Georgia Regents-Augusta, Illinois, LSU, New Mexico, North Florida, TCU, Texas, UNLV and Vanderbilt.

The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of three 18-hole rounds played each day with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. ET off No. 1 and 8:25 a.m. ET off No. 10.

Competing for UNLV will be sophomores AJ McInerney and Zane Thomas, juniors Kurt Kitayama and Carl Jonson, and freshman Taylor Montgomery.

California (+4) won by two strokes over New Mexico at last year’s Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, while Cal’s Michael Kim (-4) earned medalist honors by one shot. This will be UNLV’s first appearance in this tournament since 2005.

This will be the fourth and final tournament of the fall for the Rebels. They won the title at the Carmel Cup and finished fourth at the William H. Tucker in September, before finishing ninth at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate earlier this month.

The UNLV men’s golf team will travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Don Puckette National Invitational Tournament, which will be played at Omni Tucson National Golf Club (par 72, 7,094 yards) on Saturday-Sunday, March 16-17.

The 16-school, 54-hole tournament will consist of 36 holes played on Saturday and a final round of 18 holes taking place on Sunday. This year’s field is made up of Arizona, Arkansas, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Nevada, Reno, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, San Diego, San Diego State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming. Play will begin at 8 a.m. MT each day.

The Rebels’ lineup includes senior Kevin Penner, junior Blake Biddle, freshman AJ McInerney, and sophomores Kurt Kitayama and Carl Jonson.

UNLV finished second (out of 12 teams) at last year’s NIT at 4-under 860, one shot back of team champion San Diego State. Penner turned in the Rebels’ best individual performance at 2-under, which tied for third place, 13 shots behind individual medalist J.J. Spaun from San Diego State.

In its last tournament, UNLV finished ninth at its own Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which had a 15-team field including nine of the nation’s top-10 ranked teams. In seven events this season, UNLV has finished in the top four on four occasions.
