GIRLS ON THE RUN LAS VEGAS TO HOST 2020 SPRING 5K ON SUNDAY, MAY 3 AT UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, LAS VEGAS

WHAT:
The Las Vegas community is invited to enjoy fresh air with the whole family by participating in the Girls on the Run Las Vegas (GOTR LV) seasonal Spring 5K presented by United Way of Southern Nevada/ Women United. The event will be held on Sunday, May 3 at the University of Las Vegas (UNLV). This season’s race will be led by nearly 500 girls from dozens of sites around the valley, as well as hundreds of running buddies and community runners. The celebratory Spring 5K concludes the 2020 GOTR LV season and is open to community runners.

Each year, GOTR LV hosts two 5K events, gathering hundreds of girls in grades 3 through 8 from schools around Clark County to accomplish one common goal—to be healthy, confident and joyful. Each girl is paired with an adult Running Buddy who runs alongside them during the 5K. This non-competitive event marks the conclusion of a season-long, experienced-based curriculum designed to develop confidence, friendship, strength and emotional and spiritual health in young girls—all while integrating running. The program provides participants with a sense of accomplishment and instills the value of goal setting at a young age.

Girls currently participating in Spring Season 2020 GOTR LV program are already registered to run the 5K. Anyone can register as a community runner if they are not registered as a Running Buddy or affiliated with a current GOTR LV program participant. This race is stroller- and family-friendly.

Slater’s 50/50 Las Vegas Debut Set for Summer 2018

Slater’s 50/50 Las Vegas Debut Set for
Summer 2018

First of three restaurant locations coming to the valley

Known for its over-the-top burgers, bacon-infused creations, and unparalleled selection of craft beer, popular Southern California burger restaurant Slater’s 50/50 will open the first of three Las Vegas locations in July 2018 at 467 E. Silverado Ranch Blvd, Suite 100.

“Slater’s 50/50 was made for Vegas,” said Scott Slater, founder and baron of bacon for Slater’s 50/50. “Fans have been asking for a Las Vegas location for years. The neighborhood needs a place where you can watch the game, get a good meal, and hang out. This is real food, piled high and topped with bacon, and we can’t wait to share it with our new neighbors in Silverado Ranch.”

The Las Vegas restaurant will feature unique menu items like the Impossible Burger and Porkapalooza Platter in addition to menu mainstays, including the Original 50/50 with Slater’s signature 50/50 beef and bacon blend patty, pepper jack cheese, avocado, sunny-side up egg, and chipotle mayo on a brioche bun; the Best Damn Bacon Cheeseburger with Black Canyon Angus beef, thick-cut bacon, grilled onions, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and thousand island on a brioche bun; the P.B. & Jellousy with Black Canyon Angus beef, thick-cut bacon, natural peanut butter, and strawberry jelly on a honey wheat bun; and the Rosemary Turkey Burger with spiced all-natural turkey with rosemary-parmesan bacon, smoked gouda, organic greens, pickled red onions, roasted red peppers, tomato, and garlic aioli on a honey wheat bun. A variety of sides, salads, wings, flatbreads, and local specials will also be featured as well as vegetarian options.

Additionally, 50 craft beers will be on tap, including a special showcase of local brews from Crafthaus, Tenaya Creek, and Bad Beat Brewery. A full bar, signature boozy milkshakes, and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

Honoring the Las Vegas community, the venue decor will include life-sized Vegas-style marquee letters greeting guests as they arrive, two walls made from hundreds of tap handles, and pop art pieces of Slater’s signature burgers, all designed and created by local craftsmen and artists.

“Slater’s 50/50 may be a national brand, but we pride ourselves on creating a sense of community around each location that opens. Las Vegas is no exception,” said Cindy Sun, general manager of Slater’s 50/50 Las Vegas. “We nested our first store in the heart of Silverado Ranch so that our local fans could get their bacon on in a neighborhood environment.”

Staying true to Slater’s 50/50’s core value to “feed your insatiable hunger to improve,” this new Las Vegas location will be offering up to 100 percent tuition reimbursement at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and at College of Southern Nevada for all team members that qualify. With its arrival, Slater’s 50/50 Las Vegas is also expected to bring 40 new jobs to the area.

Slater’s 50/50 Las Vegas will serve breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner, and late-night bites and be open Sunday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m to 2 a.m. For more information, visit slaters5050.com/locations/las-vegas and get social on Facebook @Slaters5050LV, Instagram @Slaters5050LV and Twitter @Slaters5050LV.

Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic Brings High-Quality NCAA Hoops to Orleans Arena Dec. 22-23

Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic Brings High-Quality NCAA Hoops to Orleans Arena Dec. 22-23

The Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic, an annual action-packed NCAA basketball tournament, will return to Orleans Arena on Dec. 22-23, bringing teams from University of Nevada, Reno, University of San Francisco, Duquesne University, and University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale.

The University of Nevada, Reno men’s basketball team is coming off a great 2016-17 season as the first school in history to capture the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles. The Mountain West tournament title earned Nevada its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in a decade. The team finished the season 28-7 overall and went 14-4 in conference play. The Wolf Pack returns two junior starters in forward Jordan Caroline and guard Lindsey Drew. Caroline was the Mountain West Tournament MVP and earned the second-team All-Mountain West honors. He averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Senior Elijah Foster along with sophomores Josh Hall and Charlie Tooley are also back this season.

Duquesne University, a charter member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, is in its first season under Keith Dambrot, who was introduced as the program’s 17th head coach in late March of 2017. Dambrot, whose father Sid played for three Top 10 (AP) Duquesne teams in the early 1950’s, spent the past 13 seasons at Akron, where he led the Zips to a 305-139 record (23.5 wins per season), including 10 postseason appearances. At the time of Dambrot’s departure, University of Akron, Duke University, Gonzaga University and Kansas University were the only schools to post 21 or more wins in each of the past 12 seasons. The Dukes return a pair of starters in sophomore guard Mike Lewis II and junior guard Tarin Smith. Lewis, who was a member of the 2017 A-10 All-Rookie Team, led the Dukes with 14.1 points per game scoring average last season. Lewis was also the fourth freshman in school history to lead the team in scoring and was also the top-scoring freshman in the A-10. Smith, a second-year Nebraska transfer, led the Dukes in assists (99) and steals (34) last season.

The University of Southern Illinois men’s basketball team returns three starters from last year’s team that finished 17-16 and tied for third place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 9-9 league mark. Armon Fletcher, Thik Bol and Sean Lloyd are the top returning scorers. Five more lettermen return, including guard Tyler Smithpeters who started two years ago, but missed all but one game last year due to injury. Transfers Marcus Bartley, Eric McGill and Kavion Pippen are expected to provide an immediate impact on the playing rotation. Head coach Barry Hinson enters his sixth season at the helm of Sothern Illinois with a 79-83 overall record, including a 39-51 record in Missouri Valley Conference games. Having coached 14 years in the Missouri Valley Conference, he is the winningest active coach with 248 overall wins and 134 Missouri Valley Conference victories.

After helping the program to its third 20-win season in the last 30 years, a seasoned – but youthful – squad returns to the hilltop for the second installation in the Kyle Smith era. Charles Minlend and Jordan Ratinho, who combined to make 41 starts during the year, occupied two of the five spots on last year’s West Coast Conference All-Freshmen team. Minlend’s 329 points on the year ranked seventh all-time among University of San Francisco (USF) freshmen and third among first-year players in the league. Ratinho led the team in minutes played, underscoring Smith’s confidence in USF’s underclassmen. Last season’s perimeter shooting was one for the Dons’ record books, with 299 three-pointers made. Lone senior Chase Foster (.400) along with Ratinho (.423) and Minlend (.370) each swished 50 or more attempts from distance in the year. Juniors Matt McCarthy and Nate Renfro led the squad in rebounds per game, and Renfro and Mladen Djordjevic paced USF’s assist efforts.

Each team will play four games – the first two at campus sites and the final two at the Orleans Arena.

The first game of the tournament begins at noon on both days. Two-day ticket packages are available from $50 plus taxes and fees, and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000; online at www.orleansarena.com; or in-person at the gift shops inside The Orleans, Suncoast, Gold Coast and Sam’s Town. Tickets may also be purchased the day of the game (depending on availability) at the venue box office.

Bank of Nevada Scholarship Awarded to Member of UNLV’s School of Medicine Charter Class

Bank of Nevada Scholarship Awarded to Member of UNLV’s School of Medicine Charter Class

Las Vegas Resident Pursuing Medical Degree at New UNLV School of Medicine

Bank of Nevada is proud to provide significant scholarship support to a member of the charter class of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ School of Medicine. The scholarship recipient, Diana Peña will join 59 other students at UNLV who are also pursuing a medical degree.

Bank of Nevada committed $40,000 in scholarship funds over four years to assist Peña in her educational pursuits. Eventually, Peña hopes to apply her medical skills by working with children in need of medical treatment. Bank of Nevada’s scholarship support is an important part of the effort by UNLV to attract medical students and help increase the number of future physicians in Nevada.

Diana Peña is a graduate of Cheyenne High School and also received her undergraduate degree from UNLV with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Science in Biology, where she was also a student of the Honor’s College. She began her medical studies at the UNLV School of Medicine on July 17, 2017, and will be a member of the school’s charter class upon graduation in 2021. She is a first-generation college student.

In 2016, Peña was named the UNLV Office of Undergraduate Research Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar, recognized, in part, for her “… outstanding intellectual and scientific talent.”

“Diana Peña has shown to be an excellent student, achieving double majors at UNLV, while also a student of the Honor’s College”, said John Guedry, Bank of Nevada CEO. “She also found time to mentor young adults about their higher education career paths and tutor at-risk students as a UNLV Buddy. She is an outstanding example of the caliber of those attending UNLV’s School of Medicine, and one that we are pleased to support.”

“I can’t thank Bank of Nevada enough for this incredible scholarship,” said Diana Peña, recipient of the Bank of Nevada Scholarship. “I feel like I can now concentrate more on my studies over the next four years and worry a little bit less about funding my education.”

By joining with other organizations in Southern Nevada and pledging its support for the UNLV School of Medicine more than two years ago, Bank of Nevada assisted UNLV in efforts to attract an outstanding charter class of medical students and ultimately help address a community need, by working to increase the state’s shortage of medical doctors.

Bank of Nevada is providing significant scholarship support to a member of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ School of Medicine. Las Vegas resident Diana Peña is a member of the School of Medicine’s charter class and will graduate in 2021. Samsung NBA Summer League 2016 will feature a tournament-style schedule and culminate in a Championship Game for the fourth consecutive year.  Last year, coach Becky Hammon and the San Antonio Spurs were crowned champions of the 11-day, 67-game event, which set records for NBA TV viewership, consumption of digital content on NBA.com and NBA Mobile, total attendance and single-day attendance.

Samsung NBA Summer League has long served as the launch pad for future NBA stars.  Two-time Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry of Golden State played in Las Vegas prior to his rookie season, as did the last two Kia NBA Rookies of the Year: Karl-Anthony Towns (2015-16 winner) and Andrew Wiggins (2014-15) of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Memphis Grizzlies, who last competed in Las Vegas in 2013, join 22 returning NBA teams and an NBA Development League Select team this year.  Teams will compete in three preliminary games beginning on July 8 before being seeded in a tournament that leads to the Championship Game on July 18.  Each team will play at least five games in Las Vegas.

For groups seeking team-building activities or simply to be active and entertained as part of the company gathering, Museum Scavenger Hunts provide an intriguing solution. Participants will scour the Museum’s three floors of exhibits to be the first to discover answers to provocative questions about history of the ongoing battle between organized crime and law enforcement. The Mob Museum’s sales team can custom-design a scavenger hunt to meet the needs of any group.

Sample questions include:

  • The electric chair on the third floor is a replica of the one from which prison?
  • “If you people wouldn’t have drunk it, I wouldn’t have bootlegged it.” Who said it?
  • Who is the canary that can sing, but not fly?

Company event planners love the scavenger hunt option at the Museum. Says Jessica Blackburn, assistant buyer, Zappos: “Employees got to know co-workers they might not normally interact with. It was an enjoyable way to get to learn about the fascinating history of the Mob and have fun at the same. Plus, the Museum setting makes it especially memorable. After all, it’s not something you can do just anywhere.”

The Mob Museum offers flexible space and can accommodate group events from 10 to 400. Packages start at $1,000 for a four-hour meeting for 30 guests in the Oscar B. Goodman room, with access to Museum exhibits for all guests. Many more packages are available and include:

TWENTY-FOUR TEAMS  TO PARTICIPATE IN
SAMSUNG NBA SUMMER LEAGUE 2014
Utah Jazz to Make First Appearance –

Twenty-four teams, including the Utah Jazz, which will be making its first appearance, will compete in this year’s Samsung NBA Summer League July 11-21, at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The Jazz will join 22 other NBA teams and a team of NBA Development League select players in a tournament-style format to crown the Samsung NBA Summer League Champion. Teams will compete in three preliminary round games from July 11-15, before being seeded in a tournament running through the Championship Game on July 21. Each team is guaranteed to play at least five games.

This summer, 10 of the 12 teams that own Lottery picks in the 2014 NBA Draft presented by State Farm will take the court at Samsung NBA Summer League, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, who are slated to make the top three picks in this year’s Draft. Each team is expected to choose from an impressive crop of prospects that includes Australia’s Dante Exum, Duke’s Jabari Parker, Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins from Kansas, and Kentucky’s Julius Randle. Samsung NBA Summer League will feature many of these top prospects in their first taste of NBA action, along with other recent high draft picks, as well as undrafted rookies and free agents hoping to make their mark.

The 2014 summer marks the event’s 10th anniversary and will feature four teams that have competed every summer in Las Vegas: Denver Nuggets (25-20, .556); Phoenix Suns (24-22, .522); Washington Wizards (22-24, .487) and Cleveland Cavaliers (21-25, .457).

Last summer, both the Golden State Warriors (29-13, 0.690) and the Suns entered the inaugural NBA Summer League Championship game undefeated at 6-0. The Warriors, behind Ian Clark’s 33-point MVP performance, finished with a perfect 7-0 record and captured the inaugural Summer League Championship with a 91-77 victory over the Suns. Clark, who was not drafted by an NBA team in 2013, went on to sign with the Utah Jazz, and spent the entire 2013-14 season on the team’s roster.

NBA TV will televise Samsung NBA Summer League games from Las Vegas with a complete schedule of games and broadcast information to be released at a later date. Additionally, fans will once again be able to watch, via a subscription-based package, every Samsung NBA Summer League game live on NBA.com and on the NBA Summer League app.

Samsung, the official handset, tablet, and television provider of the NBA, Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), and NBA D-League (NBA D-League), joins as the title partner of NBA Summer League for the first time this summer.

Tickets for the Samsung NBA Summer League will go on sale June 1, at 9 a.m. PDT. Fans can purchase tickets to the Samsung NBA Summer League by visiting the Thomas & Mack Center box office, online at www.UNLVtickets.com, by phone at 702-739-FANS, or at UNLVtickets outlets Town Square Las Vegas Concierge and La Bonita Supermarkets.

UNLV and Florida Gulf Coast Highlight
2013 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic at Orleans Arena
December 22 and 23

Featuring the hometown University of Nevada Las Vegas Runnin’ Rebels, the 13th annual Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic basketball tournament returns to the Orleans Arena December 22 and 23. Florida Gulf Coast University, Santa Clara, Mississippi State, South Florida, Florida A&M University, Radford University and Sacred Heart University round out the tournament field.

Under then first-year coach Dave Rice, UNLV won the championship game of the 2011 Las Vegas Invitational at the Orleans Arena defeating No. 1 North Carolina 90-80.  That victory propelled the Rebels to a 26-9 record in 2011-12 and a 25-10 mark last year. UNLV has made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and 20 appearances overall, a mark only 11 teams in the nation can match.

Florida Gulf Coast University won 14 of their last 17 games and captured the attention of the nation when they became the first 15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16 in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. America’s Cinderella team of the year, FGCU first held classes in 1997 and started an intercollegiate basketball program in 2002. The University’s first full season in NCAA Division I was 2011.

Each team will play four games – the first two at campus sites and the final two at the Orleans Arena.

Two-day ticket packages start at $50, inclusive of taxes and fees, and can be purchased by calling the Orleans Arena Box Office at 702.284.7777, or by visiting www.orleansarena.com.

The Smith Center Announces Appointment of Lucy Klinkhammer as Vice President of Development

Klinkhammer brings more than 25 years of progressive professional experience to new role

Effective Oct. 14, lifelong Las Vegas resident Lucy Klinkhammer will assume the role of vice president of development at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts after more than 25 years of dedicated service to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

In her role, she will be responsible for leading and implementing the development and fundraising programs for the performing arts center while working hand-in-hand with both the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors, senior officers, staff members and volunteers to ensure the ongoing sustainability and success of the performing arts center.

“Lucy is one of the most respected development professionals in Las Vegas and we as an organization are honored to have her join our continued mission” said Myron Martin, the center’s president and CEO. “We met nearly 20 years ago at UNLV and I have always admired her work ethic, poise and professionalism. Lucy will make a truly invaluable addition to our team here at The Smith Center.

Klinkhammer is known community-wide for her management abilities, successful fundraising campaigns and community initiatives while at UNLV. Most recently, she served as the associate vice president of community relations for the Office of University of Advancement where she supported the establishment of The Lincy Institute – a research program focusing on the improvement of Nevada’s health, education and social services – and directed the Engelstad Scholarship Program – the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history that centers around volunteer service and civic engagement for selected freshmen with financial need.

Prior to that, Klinkhammer held various roles with the UNLV Foundation including associate vice president of development operations where she was responsible for raising and managing private funds for the university to enhance the quality of the institution and strengthen its mission of research, teaching and community service.

“From the first mention of The Smith Center decades ago to the moment the first shovel hit the ground, I’ve been an advocate and fan of the project and immensely proud to have this institution in Las Vegas – a city I hold dear to my heart and a place I call my hometown,” said Klinkhammer. “The Smith Center has held true to its promises of arts education and community enrichment and represents the cultural maturation of this great city. I’ve had an incredible career with UNLV and I couldn’t be more honored to join The Smith Center executive team.”

Klinkhammer will succeed this role held by longtime and beloved Smith Center team member, arts advocate and industry veteran Terry Jones as he transitions his duties to a part-time role focusing on working with major donors. During his nearly four-year tenure with The Smith Center, Jones is credited for leading the completion of the successful capital campaign, helping to open The Smith Center on time and on budget, creating the Board of Advisors and establishing the center’s ongoing Annual Fund campaign.

“As I transition many of my responsibilities to Lucy, a friend and trusted colleague, I look back at this extraordinary project with great pride and a sense of fulfillment,” said Jones. “I’m confident Lucy will grow our donor base and help achieve the true potential of this crucial community asset.”

Klinkhammer is an active member of the Las Vegas Healthy Community Coalition, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Alliance of Nevada Nonprofits, Council for the Advancement of Secondary and Higher Education and Phi Kappa Phi UNLV chapter. She has served on numerous university committees including institutional accreditation teams, Civic Engagement Committee, UNLV 50th Anniversary Committee and President’s Cabinet Implementation and Oversight Committee among others.

Klinkhammer is a proud UNLV graduate and lifetime member of the UNLV Alumni Association.

Penn & Teller Serve as Grand Marshals for 11th Consecutive Year

Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) hosts the 22nd annual AIDS Walk Las Vegas at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus on Sunday, April 15 at 8 a.m. Penn & Teller, the iconic entertainment duo, will serve as Grand Marshals for the 11th consecutive year and will host the Penn & Teller Challenge, which promises to match all monetary funds raised by pledges and donations to AFAN.

“Our organization is always overwhelmed by the massive volume of support the Las Vegas community puts behind the annual AIDS Walk,” said AFAN Executive Director Antioco Carrillo. “Penn & Teller are the main driving force behind that support, and their passionate commitment to AFAN has been immensely helpful to the organization. We are honored to continue our relationship with Penn & Teller for yet another amazing year and eagerly await the 2012 results of the always successful Penn & Teller Challenge.”

Participants may register for the AIDS Walk as individuals, join an existing team or start their own team. Registration is free, but a minimum donation of $50 per person is encouraged. To register, please visit AFANLV.ORG. To join the Penn & Teller Challenge, click here and follow the Penn & Teller Challenge link to ‘Join Our Team.’

Hosting the event for the fourth consecutive year is 8 News Now Anchor Chris Saldana.  Saldana will be joined by CBS Radio personalities Mark & Mercedes In The Morning of MIX 94.1, Lauren from Chet Buchanan & The Morning Zoo on 98.5 KLUC and Dustin In The Afternoons on X107.5, who will all serve as co-hosts throughout the day. This year’s walk will also feature a variety of entertainment including the cast of Fantasy from the Luxor Hotel & Casino, Thunder from Down Under from Excalibur Hotel & Casino, DJ Axis, the cast of Las Vegas’ own youth glee club On with the Show and more.

For more than 20 years, AFAN has hosted the AIDS Walk with great success and led the community to recognize the disease that has now grown to be a worldwide pandemic. The event serves as AFAN’s largest fundraiser of the year, providing funds for programs to assist and educate more than 3,500 men, women and children infected with HIV and AIDS in southern Nevada. More than 8,500 walkers participated in last year’s event, raising more than $461,000. The Penn & Teller Challenge raised more than $219,000 of that total. AFAN’s 2012 AIDS Walk goal is to break all attendance, community involvement and fundraising benchmarks from previous years.

In addition, the AIDS Walk serves as a unique opportunity for both local businesses and large corporations to come together and get involved as sponsors.  Sponsors of this year’s walk include QVegas, Findlay Cadillac, Audi Henderson, Lamborghini Las Vegas, Nestle, The Apothecary Shops, Caesars Entertainment, Valley Press, 8 News Now, CBS Radio, Vegas Seven, Outdoor Promotions, Clear Channel Outdoor, Rubio’s, Walgreens, Jamba Juice, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Lobster ME, Daily Kitchen & Wellness Bar, I Love Burgers and  Yelp.  These partnerships range from monetary donations to providing prizes for the top walkers and more. The success of the AIDS Walk would not be possible without the support of local businesses. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and can be found here.

Following the closing ceremonies of the AIDS Walk, a Food Truck Round-Up and picnic will be held on the UNLV campus.  Ten food trucks, including Tasty Bunz, Sin City Wings, The Rusty Pickle, Grouchy John’s, Chi-Town Hustler, The Red Neck Kitchen, Roamin’ Dough, Fat Daddy’s Ice Cream, BBQ Boy and Charlie’s Lunch, will be on hand to serve the thousands of hungry walkers.
