UNLV MEN’S GOLF NEWS: Former Rebel Golfer AJ McInerney Hired As Assistant Coach

FORMER REBEL GOLFER AJ MCINERNEY HIRED AS UNLV MEN’S GOLF ASSISTANT COACH

Former Rebel golfer and UNLV graduate AJ McInerney has been hired as an assistant coach for the men’s golf program, head coach Dwaine Knight announced Monday.

McInerney spent four years as a student-athlete at UNLV, playing under Coach Knight and graduated in 2016 with a degree in finance. He was a team captain and helped the Rebels to an Elite Eight appearance at the 2013 NCAA Championship.

“We are thrilled about AJ becoming an assistant coach,” Knight said. “He was outstanding academically as a student-athlete, earning All-America Scholar honors, and was a terrific player both in college and professionally. Since he has been with us on staff, we have realized immediate success in recruiting and we look forward to that continuing throughout his career. The future of Rebel golf is exciting and he will help us compete for championships at the highest level, while graduating our student-athletes.”

McInerney returned to the university after spending three years playing professionally. He held a Web.com Tour card from 2017-19 and his professional career was highlighted by a top-10 finish at the PGA Tour’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

McInerney’s name appears throughout the UNLV record books as he finished his collegiate career with a scoring average of 73.62 over 113 competitive rounds. He earned medalist honors at the 2016 LMU Invitational on his way to being recognized as a 2016 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar. Additionally, he was awarded the 2016 Michael Maze Award, which is presented annually to the UNLV golfer who best exemplifies the spirit of Rebel golf.

A native of Henderson, Nevada, McInerney won the Nevada state championship three times with Coronado High School and two times as an individual, setting the Nevada state scoring record his senior year in 2012.

McInerney, 26, won four times on the AJGA tour and was an AJGA Rolex First Team All-American. He was a two-time Cannon/Wyndham Cup team member and won the Ping Invitational in 2011.

He replaced Philip Rowe, who was UNLV’s men’s golf assistant then associate head coach from 2014-20. Rowe left the Rebel program to become head coach at Cal Poly.
