UNLV MEN’S GOLF IN SECOND PLACE AFTER FIRST DAY AT MW CHAMPIONSHIP
Rebels five shots back of the lead as a team, Penner one shot back individually after 4-under 67
The UNLV men’s golf team shot an opening-round 3-over-par 287 on Friday and is in second place, five shots off the lead, at the 2013 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort (par 71, 7,144 yards).
Temperatures were in the high 80s and it was windy for most of the day with gusts as high as 25 mph.
No. 6 New Mexico leads the field at 2-under 282. Two-time defending team champion San Diego State is third at 4-over, followed by Colorado State in fourth at 12-over, Air Force and Wyoming both tied for fifth at 15-over and Boise State in seventh at 16-over. Fresno State (17-over) and Nevada, Reno (30-over) are in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
All nine MW schools are represented in the field, which is also made up of 45 individuals.
New Mexico’s Victor Perez holds the individual lead by a shot at 5-under 66. His round was made up of five birdies with no bogeys. UNLV senior Kevin Penner is in second place, just one shot back, at 4-under after five birdies and a bogey. Gavin Green from New Mexico is third at 1-under, while there is a five-way tie for fourth that includes UNLV sophomore Kurt Kityama at even-par.
Other Rebel scores: freshman AJ McInerney is tied for 11th at 2-over, sophomore Carl Jonson is tied for 27th at 5-over and junior Nicholas Maruri is tied for 37th at 8-over.
