UNLV MEN’S GOLF MOVES UP TO EIGHTH AFTER SECOND ROUND IN HAWAII

Rebels, who are playing three freshmen, shot 3-over as a team on Thursday; Jonson still leading the squad at Burns Intercollegiate

The UNLV men’s golf team, which is playing three freshman, shot a second-round 3-over-par 291 on Thursday at the 38th Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is being played at Kauai’s Wailua Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards).

Three-time defending tournament champion and No. 2-ranked California (according to Golfweek) remained at the top of the leaderboard after a second-round 6-under 282 and leads the field by nine shots with a 36-hole total of 16-under 560. No. 37 BYU and No. 6 Texas A&M are both tied for second at 7-under. No. 15 New Mexico is fourth at 1-over, while UTEP and Arizona are both tied for fifth at 4-over.

The No. 28 Rebels are tied with Long Beach State for eighth at 8-over 584 for the tournament.

BYU’s Justin Keiley shot his way into the individual lead with a 6-under 66 on Thursday. His 36-hole total of 10-under 134 leads defending medalist Joel Stalter from California by four shots, while Arizona’s Erik Oja is one shot further back in third at 5-under.

UNLV junior Carl Jonson shot even-par 72 on Thursday and remains the top Rebel player in the standings as he is tied for 14th at 1-under 143. He carded three birdies and three bogeys during his second round.

Junior Kurt Kitayama is tied for 18th at even-par 144 after another even-par 72, freshman Taylor Montgomery is tied for 23rd at 1-over 145 after also shooting even par on Thursday, freshman Redford Bobbitt is tied for 70th at 8-over 152 after a 3-over 75 and freshman Chris Tuulik is tied for 74th at 9-over 153 after a 3-over 75.

The 17-team, 90-individual tournament will conclude Friday with 18 holes.
