UNLV SOPHOMORE DELAYNIE BYRNE NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Byrne notched her third double-double of the season in UNLV’s record-setting win over LMU
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV sophomore forward Delaynie Byrne was named the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday by the conference office after leading the Lady Rebels to a record-setting win over Loyola Marymount Dec. 21. This is the first weekly honor of Byrne’s career, and she is the first Lady Rebel to earn MW weekly honors since Rodjanae Wade on Jan. 6, 2020.
A native of Arvada, Colorado, Byrne posted a new career-high with 24 points and added a career-high tying 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season in leading UNLV to the 94-59 win against LMU. When the game was still in doubt in the first quarter with the Lady Rebels tied at 8-8 with the Lions, Byrne took over as she scored the next 11 points of the game. She started the run with a pair of free throws, and followed that with a three-pointer, a three-point play and then another three-pointer to put UNLV ahead 19-8. The Lady Rebels would lead by double-digits the rest of the way.
Byrne finished the afternoon hitting a career-high five three-pointers out of seven attempts, helping the Lady Rebels shatter the school record for most three-pointers as a team in a game with 15 (the previous record was 12). Overall she was 7-of-12 from the floor for 58.3%, also a new career-high. She was a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line and added two assists as well.
