UNLV’S KYLIE WASSELL NAMED AS ONE OF 30 CANDIDATES FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD

Rebel senior goalkeeper is first player in team history to be selected

UNLV senior goalkeeper Kylie Wassell is one of only 30 women’s players that were announced on Wednesday as candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate soccer.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Wassell, a Las Vegas native, became the first CoSIDA Academic All-American in team history last season, as she has completed six straight semesters with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She was also the only goalkeeper in the Mountain West to earn all-conference honors last season after setting a school record with 10 shutouts for the year, to go along with a 0.90 GAA. She was a key part in helping the Rebels to a 12-4-4 mark, setting a school record for winning percentage (0.700).

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Of the 60 candidates, 34 have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher – with three student-athletes who have achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA – and 13 are All-Americans.

The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® championships in December.

Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
