UNLV FINISHES FIRST DAY AT MOUNTAIN WEST WOMEN’S SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Rebels post pair of top-five relay finishes

The UNLV women’s swimming and diving team stands in seventh place after the first three events concluded on Wednesday night at the 2014 Mountain West Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the Palo Alto Aquatic Center. The Rebels ended the day with 60 points, and are just five points out of fourth place. Nevada, Reno has the first day lead with 107 points.

The first event, the 200 medley relay, saw the Rebels post a fourth place swim and while matching the NCAA ‘B’ provisional qualifying time of 1:38.81. That was also the second fastest swim in school history. Elena Gavrilova, Natalie Sanchez, Katelyne Herrington and Rachel Dixon made up the relay squad.

UNLV picked up two points on the 1-meter diving event thanks to a 15th-place finish from Michele Serra, who posted 219.06. The final event of the day was the 800 free relay. UNLV’s team of Jessica Heim, Gavrilova, Julia Fehervari and Jessica Marsh posted a time of 7:17.49 to place fifth, in what was the fifth fastest time in program history.

The four-day meet continues on Thursday and Friday before concluding on Saturday night.
