Smash Mouth

Smash Mouth
Formed in late 1994, Smash Mouth began recording demos and showcasing in both San Jose and Hollywood, Calif. In June 1997, Smash Mouth signed to Interscope Records when label brass caught wind of an unknown (and unsigned) band being added to L.A. radio station KROQ’s playlist after only one spin of their song “Walkin’ on the Sun.” Smash Mouth’s major-label debut Fush Yu Mang goes more than double platinum and sets the table for what most consider their masterpiece, the brilliant follow-up album Astrolounge. Boasting three top-ten hits (“All-Star,” “Then the Morning Comes,” and “Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby”), sales for Astrolounge are nearly double than their debut album, approaching quadruple platinum status. Smash Mouth’s third eponymous Interscope release features the ecstatic first single “Pacific Coast Party” and the smash hit “I’m a Believer” which was featured on the Shrek soundtrack. The band most recently released the album Magic and has focused on touring and entertaining troops in Japan, Guam, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Melissa Etheridge
Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am. The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. In February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy® Awards for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. Most recently, she released her latest album This Is M.E. in September 2014, which features singles “Take My Number,” “A Little Bit of Me,” and “Monster.”

Rock of Vegas Summer Concert Series Continues
in Downtown Las Vegas on Saturday, July 23

Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas concert series will feature Robby Krieger of The Doors, Saturday, July 23 at 9 p.m. on the 1st Street Stage. Krieger gained fame quickly after joining The Doors and went on to write hit songs for the band including “Love Her Madly” and “L.A. Woman.”

“The Doors were a legendary band in the history of rock music and having one of its founding members, Robby Krieger, with us is an honor,” said Thomas Bruny, Director of Marketing at Fremont Street Experience. “We have a Viva Vision show – The Doors – Strange Days In Vegas – that plays nightly on the world’s largest video screen, but now we’re going to have a founding member play all The Doors hits. Every fan of The Doors music will want to be here.”

Celebrating its eighth season, the free concerts have become one of the most popular summertime events in Las Vegas. This year’s lineup will turn the legendary downtown Las Vegas entertainment venue into summer’s alternative destination through Labor Day weekend with a free concert series that showcases a stellar lineup of bands that have taken music to the edge.

RobbyKrieger

Robby Krieger of The Doors
Born in Los Angeles, California, Robby Krieger played in bands with friends where he eventually came into contact with drummer John Densmore. The two began jamming on blues together, later on meeting keyboardist Ray Manzarek and poet/singer Jim Morrison, resulting in the birth of The Doors. Quickly building a name for themselves in L.A. with their unpredictable live shows, The Doors were signed to Elektra Records, and issued their debut album, the Doors, in 1967. The album would become one of rock’s all-time classics, as it spawned the monster hit “Light My Fire,” a tune penned entirely by Krieger. Subsequent studio releases — 1967′s Strange Days, 1968′s Waiting for the Sun, and 1969′s The Soft Parade — all included several classic songs, and by the dawn of the ’70s, the band issued a pair of strong releases, 1970′s Morrison Hotel and 1971′s L.A. Woman. Krieger would go on to issue solo albums in addition to playing live dates, and guest appearances on albums by other artists. In the early 21st century, Krieger and Manzarek resuscitated The Doors (with the Cult’s Ian Asbury taking Morrison’s position, and the Police’s Stewart Copeland initially taking Dunmore’s spot) for live shows and recordings. Robby is currently playing Doors songs with his Robby Krieger Band and special guest vocalist Waylon Krieger.

Her music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. Jett & The Blackhearts released their latest record, Unvarnished, last year and continue touring the globe to throngs of adoring fans.

Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
Cherry Poppin’ Daddies became a popular act during the swing revival of the late 1990s although the eight-piece band had formed one decade prior in Eugene, Oregon. The current lineup includes original members Steve Perry (who once performed under the mad scientist stage persona of “MC Large Drink”) on lead vocals, bassist Dan Schmid and trumpeter Dana Heitman. The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies broke into the musical mainstream with their 1997 swing compilation Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. Released at the onset of the late 1990s swing revival, the album went on to sell over two million copies in the United States while its eponymous single became a radio hit. The Daddies have been playing songs on tour from their newest release called The Boop-A-Doo. Cherry Poppin’ Daddies has always prided itself on its craft and musicianship that have allowed them to excel in whatever format they choose to tackle.

Spin Doctors
The Spin Doctors started out as four 20-something-year-old guys in New York. Band members include Chris Barron (vocals). Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass).   In 1992 they released Pocket Full of Kyptonite that produced the two monster hits, “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes.” The Spin Doctors became an overnight sensation, selling millions of albums around the world. Their second album, 1994’s Turn It Upside Down, featured the single, “You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast.” The band released another album before disbanding in 1999. The band reunited for a series of shows in 2001 and 2002, and they used that momentum to head back into the studio, where they recorded Nice Talking to Me which was released in 2005. Over the next few years, the Spin Doctors toured semi-regularly, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Pocket Full of Kryptonite in 2011 with a deluxe edition and a supporting tour. The Spin Doctors regrouped in 2013 for their first album in eight years, the all-blues If the River Was Whiskey.

Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
Cherry Poppin’ Daddies became a popular act during the swing revival of the late 1990s although the eight-piece band had formed one decade prior in Eugene, Oregon. The current line-include original members Steve Perry (performing under the mad scientist stage persona of “MC Large Drink”) on lead vocals, bassist Dan Schmid and trumpeter Dana Heitman. The Daddies have been debuting songs on tour from an upcoming (late 2015) album that will be called The Boop-A-Doo. Cherry Poppin’ Daddies has always prided itself on its craft and musicianship that have allowed them to excel in whatever format they choose to tackle.

The band most recently released the album Magic and continue has focused on touring and entertaining troops in Japan, Guam, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Toad the Wet Sprocket
Named in honor of a sketch by the Monty Python comedy troupe, Toad the Wet Sprocket became one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the early ’90s, boasting a contemporary folk-pop sound that wielded enough melody and R.E.M.-styled jangle to straddle both the modern rock and adult contemporary markets. Singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning and drummer Randy Guss formed the group in 1986 in their native Santa Barbara, Calif. After years of persistent touring, Toad the Wet Sprocket went mainstream with the 1991 album Fear as the single “All I Want” became a Top 20 hit. Another single from the LP, “Walk on the Ocean,” fared similarly well, and the combination pushed Fear to platinum sales. Three years later Toad returned with the album Dulcinea which generated a third Top 40 hit with the single “Fall Down.” The band continues to tour and most recently released their first album of new material in 16 years with New Constellation.

Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas Summer Concert Series Continues
with Free Concert June 13

Go Back to the 1980s with Performances by – Martha Davis and The Motels, The Tubes & The Smithereens

Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas summer concert series continues as Martha Davis and The Motels, The Tubes and The Smithereens are set to perform a free concert on the 3rd Street Stage on Saturday, June 13 at 9 p.m. Every May-September, Fremont Street Experience transforms Downtown Las Vegas into the hottest place to be with the annual Rock of Vegas summer concert series; one of the most popular summertime events in Las Vegas featuring rockin’ nightly entertainment, free headliner concerts and Viva Vision shows.

Martha Davis and The Motels
Martha Davis was born and raised in Berkeley, California, she moved to Los Angeles in the early ‘70s, along with the first incarnation of The Motels. In 1982, the Motels released the album All Four One. The smash single “Only The Lonely” rocketed into the Top 10, immediately propelling the album to gold status. The group dominated the music scene and was voted Best Performance for “Only The Lonely” at the 1982 American Music Awards. In 1983, the Little Robbers album went gold due to the Top 10 single “Suddenly Last Summer,” as well as their Top 40 hit “Remember The Nights.” In 1985, the “Shock” album yielded the Top 20 hit, “Shame” and 1987 saw the release of Martha’s first solo effort, Policy. The current band line-up includes Brady Wills on bass, Nicholas Johns on keyboards, and former Gnarls Barkley touring band members Eric Gardner and Clint Walsh on drums and lead guitar, respectively. They have been together for 10 years, longer than the original Motels. Martha continues her passion for writing, currently co-writing several songs for the new album with her current band, as well as an exciting and diverse group of collaborators.

The Tubes
The Tubes originated in Phoenix, Arizona in the late ’60s, where Bill Spooner (guitar), Vince Welnick (keyboards) and Rick Anderson  (bass) formed ‘The Beans’ (alternately billing themselves as the Radar Men from Uranus). The aspiring trio eventually relocated to the post-psychedelic haze of San Francisco in 1972. The first real incarnation of ‘The Tubes’ was born when the original members recruited Michael Cotten (keyboards) and former roadie Fee Waybill (lead vocals). By 1981 the Tubes signed to Capitol Records and released the David Foster produced ‘Completion Backwards Principle. Both Talk to Ya Later and Don’t Want to Wait Anymore earned them significant airplay on American radio, while the album became the Tubes’ first Top 40 chart entry. Two years later, in 1983, due to a provocative video, the single ‘She’s a Beauty’ reached the Top Ten, and pushed the Tubes’ sixth studio album, ‘Outside/Inside’ into the U.S. Top 20. The Tubes have always managed to expose, enlighten and entertain audiences worldwide by combining art with trash, comedy with tragedy, and innovative rock theatre with consummate musicianship.

The Smithereens
Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken and original bassist Mike Mesaros grew up in Carteret, New Jersey, forging a friendship as teenagers through a mutual love of ’60s rock ‘n’ roll and other vintage sounds. After meeting the similarly inclined  Pat DiNizio, the four formed the Smithereens, and won some local renown with a pair of independently released EPs, 1980’s Girls About Town and 1983’s Beauty and Sadness. The Smithereens were already a seasoned live act by the time they achieved surprise commercial success in 1986 with their first full album Especially for You, with spawned the MTV hits “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep.” The band continued to reap considerable airplay, critical acclaim and fan loyalty with the subsequent longplayers Green Thoughts, Smithereens 11, Blow Up, A Date with The Smithereens and God Save The Smithereens, which yielded such enduring numbers as “Only a Memory,” “House We Used to Live In,” “Drown in My Own Tears” and “A Girl Like You.”
