Kelly Clarkson Returns to Host for Third Year

dick clark productions and NBC announced today that the “2020 Billboard Music Awards” has set a new date for Wednesday, Oct. 14 live on NBC. Additional details regarding production of the show will be announced at a later date.

The “2020 Billboard Music Awards,” originally scheduled to air live on NBC from Las Vegas on April 29, was postponed due to the pandemic.

As previously announced, Kelly Clarkson will return to host the event. This will mark Clarkson’s third time hosting the hugely popular award show after receiving unanimous acclaim as host in 2018 and 2019.

The “2019 Billboard Music Awards” aired on May 1 and easily won the night vs. the Big 4 network competition. The show averaged a 2.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 8 million viewers, according to “live plus same day” ratings from Nielsen Media Research, to deliver NBC’s top-rated in-season Wednesday in 18-49, excluding Olympics, since Dec. 7, 2016.

“Billboard Music Awards” nominees and winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music/MRC Data. MGM Resorts’ comprehensive “Seven-Point Safety Plan” is a multi-layered set of protocols and procedures designed in conjunction with medical and scientific experts to mitigate the spread of the virus, protect customers and employees and rapidly respond to potential new cases. Facing unprecedented financial challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, UNLV Athletics has launched the D5 Momentum Fund 2.0 Campaign with the goal of raising $1.5 million from donors by the end of the calendar year.

 

Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois announced the critical initiative Friday just days after the Mountain West postponed all fall sports competition, including the Rebel football team’s debut season at the newly completed Allegiant Stadium.

 

“While the news was difficult, the decision was the right one as our top priority is our sincere and unwavering commitment to the health and safety of our students, coaches, staff, and the entire community who support the Rebels,” said Reed-Francois. “We will work with the conference on a return-to-action plan in the weeks ahead, as our expectation is to be back playing in the spring. There are, however, real financial consequences associated with our new reality.”

 

The Momentum Fund originally debuted as the pandemic shut down campus – and all competition – in March. Members of the Rebel Athletic Fund were sent a letter earlier today from Reed-Francois explaining the new initiative as the department looks to overcome the loss of ticket and premium sales revenue.

 

“The Momentum Fund 2.0 was created to allow our fans to invest in our student-athletes’ success as we face these challenges,” she said. “UNLV has come too far in creating undeniable momentum to stop now and we are asking our loyal supporters for their help.”

Cancer Survivors and Caregivers invited to Drive-Thru Parade for Relay For Life of Southern Nevada at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino

 Local cancer survivors and caregivers in the greater Las Vegas area are invited for a Drive-Thru Survivor and Caregiver Parade on Saturday, August 15 at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The celebratory parade is part of the virtual Relay For Life of Southern Nevada 2020 event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society (ACS).

 

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Relay For Life of Southern Nevada continues the fight against cancer by urging participants near and far to come together for a virtual Relay For Life event on Saturday, August 15 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The goal of the event is to bring those affected by cancer together and to raise funds for the ongoing efforts of the American Cancer Society (ACS).

 

At the core of what the American Cancer Society represents, cancer survivors traditionally kick off Relay For Life events by leading the first lap – celebrating another year of life. This is traditionally followed by the caregiver lap to celebrate their selfless acts of love and kindness. To honor this tradition, there will be a Drive-Thru Survivor and Caregiver Parade at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 15. These amazing heroes are invited to decorate their cars with key details including names, numbers of years as a survivor, colors corresponding with the type of cancer defeated, traditional Relay color of purple and white, or any way to celebrate these incredible accomplishments in the battle against cancer. Everyone will avoid the heat by being required to safely socially-distance in their own vehicles. The parade will be live-streamed on Facebook and the Relay website. There will be an award for the best decorated car.

Participants are asked to arrive at the Rio Convention Center parking lot around 7:20 a.m. to begin check in and staging. All survivors are asked to register online at relayforlife.org/snv prior to the event.  Registered survivors will receive a goodie bag and survivor t-shirt* until they are gone (*provided on a first-come, first-served basis according to those registered as a survivor online). Participants can watch opening ceremonies on their phones inside their cars prior to entering the track. Please note that NO cars will be allowed to enter the track after 7:59am.

JDRF Partners with Shell for the Community Pump Program and Launches Fundraising Gas Pump in the Southwest

JDRF, much like many local charities, was hit hard with having fundraising goals obliterated due to COVID-19 and the cancelation of multiple events. While the charity looks to alternatives, including the recent success of the Together for a Cure! virtual variety show, they found a partnership with a local gas station to fill up those fundraising tanks!

The Shell Community Pump Program was created to give back to the local community, and in this case, those living with type 1 diabetes in Nevada. Now up and running, Green Valley Grocery located at Ft. Apache Road and Hacienda, 5325 S Fort Apache Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89148 (just south of Tropicana), features two gasoline pumps branded with JDRF’s imagery. The specially-wrapped Pump 7 and Pump 8 also let customers know that using those select pumps help JDRF find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

A donation of $.03 per gallon will be donated from each of those pumps to JDRF right here in Nevada.

“We are so grateful for this opportunity. With all of our fundraising events canceled for the foreseeable future, this was a welcomed way to help out our local families and to maybe educate someone who sees the display and wants to help.” said Market Director Celia Wheeler. “It’s as simple as getting your gas at one of those pumps and you have made a donation and a difference!”

Online Poker Tournament Raises Over $13K for Local Charity Miracle Flights 

 More than 100 poker players nationwide showed their support for Miracle Flights last week as the Las Vegas–based charity hosted its first-ever online poker tournament on Wednesday, August 5. With celebrity guests Oksana Baiul, Brad Garrett, Richard Kind and high stakes poker pro Matt Berkey, the evening raised a total of $13,285. 

All funds will go directly to support programming initiatives for Miracle Flights, the nation’s leading medical flight charity, which provides free plane tickets to families who need help reaching specialized medical care far from home. The organization has also expanded its services in recent months to provide face masks for every flyer, ground transportation to medical appointments and other resources to ease the financial and emotional burden of travel amid the Covid-19 crisis. 

“Miracle Flights typically provides around 600 flights a month, and even during the pandemic, so many families continue to need our services,” says Miracle Flights CEO Mark E. Brown. “Like all charitable organizations, we’re evolving and adapting to a new fundraising landscape. As we do so, we’re incredibly grateful to our presenting sponsor, Findlay Volkswagen, and the generous network of supporters who came together to make this great night possible.”  

Brown joined Faded Spade CEO Tom Wheaton to co-host the virtual tournament, which was live-streamed on Twitch. The HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor also hosted dozens of local players with an exclusive opportunity to participate from a socially distanced, public setting. 

At the end of the evening, one tournament champion received a grand-prize getaway for two to Hawaii, including round-trip airfare to Honolulu provided by Southwest Airlines and a four-night stay at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel.

Trove of Ice Age Fossils Found in Carson City Backyard Now at Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Tom Gordon of Carson City, Nevada was digging a trench for a water line in his backyard when he began to find bones that turned out to be the remains of Ice Age herbivores. Mr. Gordon’s daughter contacted Nevada paleontologist, Dr. Steve Rowland, an Emeritus Geology Professor at UNLV and Lab Manager at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. In June, Rowland, Gordon, and UNLV PhD student, Eric Chameroy, spent a week digging up the fossils. Rowland and Chameroy are now studying and cataloging the collection at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Visitors to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum are invited to stop by the Richard A. Ditton Learning Lab to see the fossils and meet the paleontologists who are currently studying them, Monday through Friday from 9am – 4pm.

“The bones of several individual animals are present in the fossil assemblage,” Rowland said, “but almost all of them appear to belong to the same species. The frustrating thing is that we aren’t completely sure yet what species they belong to! We did not recover any well-preserved skulls, which is the most useful part of an animal’s skeleton for identification purposes, so we have not yet been able to unequivocally identify the species.“

Rowland added that the animal whose bones most closely match the shapes of the Carson City bones, is a musk ox―a long-haired, cow-like animal that lives in Alaska and northern Canada. Musk oxen might seem to be unlikely animals to live in Nevada, but there were two species of musk oxen―both of which are now extinct―that lived throughout much of the U.S. during the Ice Age. Fossils of one of the extinct musk ox species―called the ‘shrub ox’―have been found in a cave north of Reno. The other extinct species―the ‘helmeted musk ox’―has never been reported to occur in Nevada, but it is well known from western Utah, Idaho, and Colorado.

“There is no reason the helmeted musk ox wouldn’t also have lived in Nevada,” Rowland said, “and I strongly suspect that we have the fossils that will ultimately show that it was here.” The helmeted musk ox went extinct about 11,000 years ago. The age of the Carson City fossils is not yet known, but a sample has been sent to a radiocarbon lab for analysis. “I’m guessing it will be around 18,000 to 20,000 years,” he said. “That is the age of the Last Glacial Maximum, when the Earth’s climate was the coldest it had been for the past 100,000 years. It would have been a good time for musk oxen to inhabit Nevada, at the latitude of Carson City.”

Rowland and Chameroy will eventually take some of the fossils to the University of Utah Museum in Salt Lake City, to compare them with fossils that have previously been identified to the level of species. They are also planning a return trip to Carson City to continue excavation.

It has not yet been determined where the Carson City bones will ultimately end up. “They should definitely stay in Nevada. Ideally, they should be permanently housed and displayed in a museum close to where we excavated them,” Rowland said. “They are part of Nevada’s natural heritage. They need to be kept where members of the public can see them and other scientists can examine them”
