Monies Raised to Support Pediatric Cancer Research and Patient Navigator at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada

Southern Nevada’s leading construction companies will hold the 3rd Annual Construction vs. Cancer Event on February 29, 2020 on the grounds of the Silverton Casino. Created for pediatric cancer patients and their supporters, the event gives Las Vegas children an exclusive opportunity to operate heavy machinery, including backhoes, diggers, and excavators (with supervision). More than 2,500 big and little construction “operators” are expected to attend this unique fundraiser for The American Cancer Society.

Current sponsors of the event include Martin-Harris Construction, NDL Group Inc., Nevada DOT, Lochsa Engineering and the Cure 4 the Kids Foundation. After winning six of its last seven games and starting Mountain West play 5-1, the UNLV men’s basketball team will host New Mexico at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.

The Runnin’ Rebels (10-9, 5-1) have won five straight at the Thomas & Mack Center. Saturday’s game will be a blackout with all fans being encouraged to wear black. 250 lucky fans in attendance will win a black UNLV jersey, and the athletics department is offering a “Break Game” special as students are still on winter break. Junior guard Amauri Hardy leads four UNLV players averaging in double-figure scoring with 14.9 points per game (9th in MW), while junior forward Mbacke Diong is the team’s leading rebounder with 9.1 per contest (5th in MW). UNLV is under new leadership this year in head coach T.J. Otzelberger.

New Mexico (15-4, 4-2) is in its third year under head coach Paul Weir. The Lobos had won 10 of 11 games before falling at Colorado State, 105-72, on Wednesday. JaQuan Lyle leads the team in scoring with 16.9 ppg (5th in MW). Carlton Bragg was the leading rebounder (10.3 rpg), but he is no longer with the team. Lyle also leads the team and the conference in assists with 5.7 per game.

Saturday’s game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network with Andrew Catalon and Steve Lappas calling the action. NFL Hall of Famer and Beloved Entertainer to Showcase Knack for Comedy, Singing and Storytelling with Ongoing Performances

 

 Following his celebrated shows in Las Vegas and Atlantic City in 2019, “The Terry Bradshaw Show” will kick off a residency at Luxor Hotel and Casino in March.

 

The man behind it all, NFL legend and iconic entertainer, Terry Bradshaw, chronicles his life through the musical, comedy, and storytelling production. The residency is set to debut inside the Atrium Showroom at Luxor on Thursday, March 19, with all shows scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

 

In the production, Bradshaw entertains the crowd with his dynamic singing ability, endearing personality and charisma in a 70-minute show that accounts his life’s journey. The production showcases Bradshaw’s vocal talents, award-winning storytelling style and the same straight-shooting humor that has made Bradshaw an all-time favorite as an Emmy Award-winning co-host and analyst on FOX NFL Sunday.

 

The talented team behind “The Terry Bradshaw Show” includes musical direction by Smokin’ Joe Escriba. The show was written by Jon Macks with original songs by David Goldsmith and John Kavanaugh. Development and production of the show was provided by Anita Mann Productions, with continued production by Bradshaw Enterprises II.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Located on Las Vegas Boulevard just north of Sahara Avenue, The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod is the gateway from the North Strip to downtown Las Vegas. The 1,149-foot STRAT tower, the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States, is home to the SkyPod, which includes the acclaimed Top of the World restaurant, famous for its revolving dining room and acclaimed cuisine;  the highest view of the Las Vegas Strip from the newly remodeled Observation Deck; thrilling attractions and rides including: SkyJump Powered by MTN DEW, Big Shot, X-Scream and Insanity; a wedding chapel; and meeting rooms.   • Big Shot

Strap into the Big Shot and prepare to be shot 160 feet in the air at 45 miles per hour, as guests overlook the majestic Las Vegas Valley. In a matter of seconds, the Big Shot thrill ride catapults 16 riders from the 921-foot high platform up the tower’s mast to a height of 1,081 feet and down again. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall to ride Big Shot. Riders under the age of 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Insanity

Insanity features a massive mechanical arm extending out 64 feet over the edge of The STRAT tower and stands at a height of over 900 feet. This thrill ride spins passengers in the open air at speeds of up to three ‘G’s. Riders are propelled up to an angle of 70 degrees then rewarded with a breathtaking view of historic downtown Las Vegas. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall to ride Insanity. Riders under the age of 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • X-Scream

Hovering 866 feet above the ground, X-Scream’s space-age, yet simplistic, design resembles a massive teeter-totter or rollercoaster unlike anything seen before. X-Scream propels riders headfirst, 27 feet over the edge of the The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod. After being shot over the edge, guests are dangled weightlessly above the Las Vegas Strip before being pulled back and propelled over again for more fun. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall to ride X-Scream. Riders under the age of 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • SkyJump Powered by MTN DEW

SkyJump Powered by MTN DEW is a heart-pounding, open-air leap from 855 feet above the neon Strip, holding a Guinness World Record as the highest commercial decelerator descent facility. Day or night, guests can zoom toward the landing pad at speeds topping 40 mph. Jumpers must be 14 years of age or older and 52 inches or taller. Jumpers between 14 – 17 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must sign an authorization waiver. Maximum weight allowed is 265 pounds.

Springs Preserve to Host Annual Walk to Benefit Heart Kids in Southern Nevada on March 21

Children’s Heart Foundation hits 2020 with a stride, gearing up for big moves for the 17th Annual Walk with the Heart of a Child.  For 2020, the annual family walk moves to historic Springs Preserve, giving walkers a true outdoor space to lace up their sneakers, get those steps in and support the one in 100 (or 40,000) children in the United States who are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) each year.  These 40,000 annual cases make congenital heart defects the leading cause of illness and death in the first year of life. Aiming to raise both awareness and much need funding to fight what can be a deadly pediatric disease, Children’s Heart Foundation invites all Las Vegans to participate in the 17th Annual Walk with the Heart of a Child on Saturday, March 21, 2020.  This annual fun walk through Springs Preserve (333 S. Valley View Blvd. Las Vegas) allows participants to walk in celebration or in remembrance of the young lives affected by congenital heart defects throughout the Las Vegas community.

The morning of fun and awareness kicks off at 7 a.m. with registration, check-in, Kids Zone and vendor booths, followed by the opening ceremonies at 8 a.m.  The Walk begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by individual and team awards.  All Children’s Heart Foundation supporters and walkers can stay at Springs Preserve once the walk is complete for a day of free family fun including “Jump! The Ultimate Dog Show” at 11 a.m. in the Big Springs Amphitheater and general admission to Springs Preserve (does not include special events, Butterfly Habitat or train rides). Standup comedian and actor Joey Diaz will perform live at the Treasure Island Theatre on Feb. 28 at 9 p.m.

Diaz got his start in comedy while serving a short stint in a correctional facility in 1988. The prison’s projector would occasionally break on weekly movie nights, so Diaz would do stand up comedy to fill in time. Since then, his passion for storytelling has taken him from the stage to the big screen.

While touring as a comedian, Diaz began acting and appeared in television shows such as “My Name is Earl,” “Children’s Hospital” and “The Mentalist.” Diaz also held recurring sketch roles on “Stand Up Revolution and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Appearing in multiple films, Diaz can be seen in the “The Longest Yard,” “Spider-Man 2” and “Taxi.” Most recently, he appeared as Robert De Niro’s boxing coach in “Grudge Match.”

After the popularity of his short comedy series “The Testicle Testaments,” Diaz starred in his first hour special “Socially Unacceptable,” tackling topics of drugs and his wild youth. Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix stand up comedy series “The Degenerates.”

Grand Canyon Lodge – North Rim is the only lodging inside the National Park on the North Rim. Located at Bright Angel Point, the Lodge was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Channel your inner Gatsby and Daisy and be whisked away to an evening of celebration with live music, a dinner buffet, drink specials, giveaways, a costume contest and more. Queen Bee Market will put a spring in shopping with two-day market starting from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 7 and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8 at The Conference Center of Las Vegas.

 

Described as “Etsy comes to life,” the popular urban-style handmade market is feminine and fun, hosting vendors who make their products by hand, then display them in booths that are designed with flair. This will be the 31st Queen Bee Market since its creation in 2010, with artisans showcasing an array of handmade home décor, accessories, clothing, paper arts, vintage items, furniture and more. Attendees can also expect workshops and make-and-take stations. A sampling of the confirmed participants thus far includes Beth and Lily Candle Co., Everyone, Fireside Co., Confection Kitchen and more.

 

Originally vendors at Queen Bee Market, sisters Kellie Dooley and Allison Gharst became the owners in 2014 and hand-select the vendors who participate in each expo. “We love bringing Queen Bee Market to Las Vegas each year because of the community; we’ve received great feedback from shoppers about how much they love shopping for handmade items in a fun, creative atmosphere,” said Dooley, “Plus, a large number of our vendors are Vegas locals.”

 

Tickets will be priced at $5 per person and will be available for purchase at the door. Children 12 years old and younger and military with ID will receive free entry. Queen Bee Market was originally founded in 2010, when it caught the attention of sisters, Kellie Dooley and Allison Gharst, who participated through their Etsy-based company, Peabody & Sassafras.
