Golden Gate to Pop the Champagne for 112th Birthday, Jan. 1

Iconic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino to Pop the Champagne for 112th Birthday, Jan. 13

Founded in 1906, Las Vegas’ original hotel to celebrate with special birthday shots, match play and more

From hosting the Rat Pack to housing Vegas’ first telephone, the historic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino will celebrate 112 years of service in Las Vegas this Saturday, January 13. Founded in 1906, the iconic property invites guests to a commemorative celebration, which will include free champagne for visitors who join its One Card™ loyalty program; $25 match play; and special Birthday Cake shots for 99 cents – a nod to the original shrimp cocktail price.

“It has been an honor to be a part of the influential evolution of Golden Gate in Downtown Las Vegas,” said CEO Derek Stevens. “We are grateful for how Golden Gate has paved the way for new properties such as our neighboring 18 Fremont project, and we are thrilled to see it’s continuous adaption to the community.”

Golden Gate has celebrated some of the most colorful moments in Vegas history, spanning the roaring 20s, the prohibition era and now the 21st century. Sharing its birth year with other momentous occasions, here are other notable events and facts that happened in 1906:

  • The Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad was built.
  • The population of Las Vegas was only 30.
  • The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
  • President Theodore Roosevelt is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in negotiating peace in the Russo-Japanese War.
  • The average life expectancy in the United States was 47.
  • The first animated cartoon was copyrighted.
  • The Chicago White Sox win their First World Series by defeating their crosstown rival Chicago Cubs on October 14.
  • 90 percent of all doctors had no college education.

The growth of Golden Gate Hotel & Casino has contributed to the vision of providing classic yet modern hospitality offerings to guests in Downtown Las Vegas. The property recently went through an exquisite renovation that nearly doubled the casino in size; added a dramatic entry way on Fremont Street Experience; and extended its high-energy outdoor bar, OneBar at One Fremont Street.

The revitalization will complement Derek and Greg Stevens vision for their upcoming 18 Fremont hotel-casino property, formally known as the Las Vegas Club. Sitting across from Golden Gate, the brothers will usher in a new wave of modern hotel design to Downtown Las Vegas.

The 112th anniversary offerings will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

About Golden Gate Hotel & Casino

Opening in 1906 at One Fremont Street, Golden Gate’s legacy spans the birth of Las Vegas, the Roaring 20s, the Rat Pack era and now the 21st century. Boasting a prime location under the lights of the Fremont Street Experience and three distinctive bars, the historic property delivers an experience that is authentic and energetic. Golden Gate – where the past meets the future and the spirit of Las Vegas is very much alive.

Iconic Las Vegas Restaurant Offering Ol’ Blue Eyes’ Favorite Dishes and Cocktail in One
Special Menu Throughout December

Frank Sinatra fans are coming to Las Vegas this month to pay homage to the Chairman of the Board. This Saturday, Dec. 12, will mark what would have been his 100th birthday. The Golden Steer Steakhouse, Las Vegas’ longest-running steakhouse, remains one of the very few places where he dined in the city. As such, the iconic restaurant is offering 3-course menu was created based on what Sinatra ordered as a Golden Steer regular, back in the ’60s while performing Las Vegas shows with the Rat Pack.

Priced at $100* per person and available any day of the month except this Saturday, guests who experience “Frank’s Menu” will dine in his actual booth (table 22) which seats up to four guests.
His menu includes:

  • Clams Casino: from Narragansett Bay, this dish is prepared with clams on the half shell, baked with white wine, bacon, diced red and yellow peppers and bread crumbs.
  • New York Strip Steak, 16 oz.: served with sautéed diced tomatoes, garlic and white wine and medium rare, just like he ordered it.
  • Bananas Foster: the house specialty, The Golden Steer is one of the few restaurants in Las Vegas able to stylishly serve this dessert tableside as a flambé.
  • Jack Daniels: the drink will be prepared just as he drank it – with three fingers of Jack and two ice cubes.
  • Italian red wine.
  • One classic Zippo lighter, engraved with The Golden Steer logo and the date of Sinatra’s 100th birthday.
  • One ticket for admission to The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, where guests can learn more about Sinatra’s history with the mafia including FBI photos regarding the kidnapping of Sinatra’s only son, Frank, Jr. (see below for more information) and his ties to Chicago Outfit boss Sam Giancana and the Cal-Neva lodge.

For guests wishing to dine on Sinatra’s actual birthday, Saturday, Dec. 12, in addition to Frank’s Menu and being seated in his booth, each guest will receive:

  • One roll of dimes: on Dec. 8, 1963, Sinatra’s only son, Frank, Jr., was kidnapped at Harrah’s Club Lodge in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He was 19-years-old at the time and preparing for his own performance that night. The kidnappers demanded Sinatra call from untraceable pay phones. Following the return of his son, Sinatra began a lifelong habit of carrying a roll of dimes (the cost of a pay phone call at the time) “just in case of emergency.” He was reportedly buried with a roll of dimes, as well as a bottle of Jack Daniels and a pack of Camel cigarettes.
  • On that night only, there will be a live performance of Sinatra classics.

The price for “Frank’s Menu” scheduled on his birthday is a minimum of $1,000 per reservation for the four-top. Two spots are currently available for this Saturday: 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

To further the nostalgia of the evening, for one night only, Piano Follies featuring Lionardo will be performing Sinatra’s classic hits.

“The popularity of this menu far exceeded any of our expectations,” says Dr. Michael Signorelli, owner, The Golden Steer Steakhouse. “We are able to offer a truly authentic experience because our restaurant is one of the very few places that remain in Las Vegas where Sinatra actually dined. With us, not only will you dine and drink like Sinatra, you’ll sit exactly where he sat – which makes it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Sinatra became a regular guest at The Golden Steer in the ’60s while he was performing with the Rat Pack (Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Joey Bishop). It was Sammy Davis, Jr. who first brought Sinatra to the restaurant. In the ’60s, African-Americans could not dine in the hotels and this applied to Davis, even though he was a performer. The Golden Steer welcomed Davis who would stop to eat at the restaurant which was, at the time, located between the Moulin Rouge, Las Vegas’ first desegregated hotel and casino, and the Sands Hotel and Casino, where the Rat Pack performed. The Golden Steer honors its repeat and loyal guests by dedicating booths. Thanks to Sinatra’s patronage, the restaurant’s celebrity guest list would expand to begin including regulars such as Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio and John Wayne. The restaurant dedicated booth number 20 to Davis, booth number 21 to Martin and booth number 22 to Sinatra, where all three tables remain next to one another to this day.

To book reservations, call (702) 384-4470 or click here for Open Table.

*The price does not include tax and gratuity.

Founded in 1958, The Golden Steer Steakhouse is the city’s most iconic and longest-running steakhouse. The world-renowned restaurant is known for its impeccable service, classic dishes and vintage Victorian ambience. The Golden Steer transports guests back in time to “Old Las Vegas” when waiters wore tuxedos, guests slowly sipped martinis and dined on decadent steaks. The Golden Steer Steakhouse prides itself on serving “The Best Steaks on Earth” that are USDA Prime Aged, corn-fed beef, as well as seafood and Italian specialties. This is also one of the only restaurants in Las Vegas to serve Bananas Foster tableside as a flambé. Though many changes have taken place over the years, one of the core elements is longevity of staff and their level of experience, with some staff members boasting more than 40 years of service. The Golden Steer Steakhouse is open nightly from 4:30 to 11 p.m. and located at 308 W. Sahara Ave. For more information, go to and like on Facebook.

Reckless in Vegas Hosts Costume Party Performance, October 30

Reckless in Vegas

Acclaimed Band, Reckless in Vegas, to Perform Alt-Rock Renditions of Rat Pack-Era Classics

On the heels of its first, sold-out engagement at Cabaret Jazz at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Reckless In Vegas announces its next Cabaret Jazz show. On Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m., the unique power trio invites the public to don its best 1950s and 60s-era fashions for a spirited costume contest to take place throughout the evening’s performance.

Deirdre Clemente, fashion history expert and associate director, public history program, University of Nevada, Las Vegas will judge the contest. The first-place winner will receive $250, the second-place winner will receive $150 and the third-place winner will receive a Reckless In Vegas swag bag.

Reckless In Vegas combines the imagery, banter and classic music from the 1960s “glory days” of Las Vegas with a contemporary rock band aesthetic. It’s not just a band—members Michael Shapiro (band founder, lead vocals, guitar), Ryan Low, aka Dr. Fu (drums, vocals) and Chris Nichols (bass, vocals) have created an exciting show that incorporates their live performances of modern versions of songs by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis, Sonny & Cher, Frankie Valli, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash and Bobby Darin with dynamic production-show elements. Whether you remember the swinging Vegas lounge era days or were born later, Reckless In Vegas has something for everyone. Video montages, dialogue, humor, modern hard-rocking grooves and tender moments of balladry combine to create a truly original take on this classic genre. Think The Rat Pack meets Green Day.

“Playing Cabaret Jazz at The Smith Center for the first time is a thrill for us,” says Shapiro. “Its classic showroom vibe complements our show perfectly—we can’t wait to see our fans and make new ones in such a distinctive environment.”

About Michael Shapiro
Shapiro was raised in Las Vegas and, after a stint in California, came back to his old hometown earlier this year. He picked up his first guitar at age 13 and trained hard in guitar, vocals, piano and trumpet, attuning his ear to classical opera as well as rock. A chance encounter with a family friend struck the right chord and paved Shapiro’s way into music. At age 16, he had the opportunity to jam with Bruce Springsteen. The rocker’s energetic marathon performances spurred Shapiro to develop a taste for a raucous stage presence. After stints in various cover bands in his teens, Shapiro formed the band Trip, released a few CD’s and toured. Being part of the VH1 Rock Across America Tour, Trip opened for such artists as Edwin McCain, Duncan Sheik, The Romantics and Cheap Trick. It was during an ill-fated gig opening for Great White when a tragic fire struck, that moved Shapiro to deeply reflect on life’s vagaries and whims.

He bounced back, releasing his first solo album, Somehow, Someway, and toured nationally, opening for the band Live. After moving to San Rafael, Calif., he formed the power trio, Reckless in Vegas.

Shapiro’s style yields insight into his influences: Jimi Hendrix’s relentless guitar riffs, Journey’s Neal Schon, Carlos Santana and the melodic and powerful vocal styling of U2′s Bono. In fact, it is “Hendrix’s bluesy style” and wild “manipulation of the guitar” that Shapiro credits as a major early influence.

About Ryan Low
Born in Chinatown, San Francisco, Low is a high visibility drummer who is remarkable not only for his showmanship, distinctive and varying styles and driving rhythm, but also for how often he is seen playing with various artists. Low’s unique approach and explosive energy onstage brings him to the forefront of Reckless In Vegas’ performances. Besides being a performer and session player, Low is a committed teacher of drums and music. He applies his classical music training to his teaching, along with his love and passion for drumming. Although Low is a true lover of rock and funk drumming, he has explored a variety of musical styles from hip-hop to country, Latin jazz to R&B. He is always up for a challenge to expand his musical repertoire. Over the last 20 years, Low has performed everywhere west of the Rockies, and remains a solid Bay Area performer. He also has extensive recording experience, with almost 13 records under his belt to date. He has expanded his drumming credentials by working as co-producer on one of his recent projects.

About Chris Nichols
Born in Newark, Ohio, as the son of a piano teacher, Nichols studied the piano, cello, guitar, drums and bass.  His early years led him to Nashville where he toured with several artists throughout the nation. His desire to “Go West” led him to Las Vegas when the mob still owned the town. He saw the Sands and the Dunes casinos fall to their demise. Since moving to Sin City, he has recorded on several records both as an artist and an engineer.  Nichols actually shared the stage with Shapiro in Trip as they ascended to the height of that band’s career. With the help of several bands, he has also shared stages with Willie Nelson, Chris Isaak, Toto, Peter Frampton, Rick James and Lifehouse, to name just a few.

Tickets for “An Evening with Reckless In Vegas” start at $35 and are available at The Smith Center Box Office, located at 361 Symphony Park Avenue, by phone at (702) 749-2000 or (808) 326-6868 (TTY) and online at For preferred seating and special rates for groups of 10 or more, contact 702-749-2348.
