For the first time since arriving at The Neon Museum Boneyard, the iconic Moulin Rouge sign was re-illuminated during a private event for museum donors and VIPs on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Museum President and Chief Executive Officer Rob McCoy greeted guests and along with Councilman Cedric Crear, City of Las Vegas; and Claytee White, director, UNLV’s Oral History Research Center told the history of the Moulin Rouge and what it means to Las Vegas.

  • To re-lamp the 11 letters, which range in height from 14- to 18-feet tall and span from 17 to 3 feet, Hartlauer Signs used more than 832 feet of neon tubing.
  • Neon gas and phosphorous blue glass were used to give the neon its iconic, fluorescent pink color.
  • Weighing in at 1,200 pounds, the letter “M” was one of many letters rearranged during the project.
  • In total, re-electrification and reinstallation took 293 man-hours to complete.

Founded in 1996, the Neon Museum is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting iconic Las Vegas signs for educational, historic, arts and cultural enrichment. It has been named “Best Museum” by Las Vegas Weekly, one of “Sin City’s Best Retro Sites” by MSN, “No. 1 Las Vegas Museum Sure to Entertain and Educate” by USA Today’s, “One of the Top 10 Coolest Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do” by, one of the “Top 10 Historic Spots in Las Vegas” by; one of “15 Most Fascinating Museums in the U.S.” by; and earns a consistent 4.5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor. On its 2.27-acre campus, the Neon Museum houses an outdoor exhibition space known as the Neon Boneyard (“boneyard” is traditionally the name for an area where items no longer in use are stored); the North Gallery, home to the nighttime augmented-reality, audiovisual spectacle, “Brilliant!”; the Boulevard Gallery outdoor exhibit and event space; and its visitors’ center, housed inside the former La Concha Motel lobby. The museum collection also includes nine restored signs installed as public art throughout downtown Las Vegas. Public education, outreach, research, archival preservation and a grant-funded neon sign survey represent a selection of the museum’s ongoing projects. Both the Neon Boneyard and the La Concha Visitors’ Center are located at 770 Las Vegas Blvd. North in Las Vegas. Click here for tour schedules and pricing information. Every week, new and exciting content is added to the CirqueConnect hub to explore on-demand, including hour-long specials, exclusive looks behind the curtain, virtual reality experiences, family-friendly programming, sing-alongs, and more.

Mystère is the original must-see Cirque du Soleil production that combines high-energy acrobatics with dramatic dance set to the thunderous rhythms of the Taïko drums. Featuring an international cast of 75 artists, Mystère provides the ultimate discovery that life itself is a mystery. Fans of the show and viewers of the upcoming CirqueConnect special may be surprised to learn:

  • Alice the Snail weighs over 2,000 lbs and travels approximately 165 feet per show on stage and has traveled more than 1.3 million feet or 261 miles so far.
  • There are 800 light cues in the show for the nearly 1,200 lighting fixtures in the theatre. If the show cable was laid out end-to-end, it would stretch from Treasure Island on Las Vegas Blvd to the California border.
  • The Bungee Girl costumes have over 2,500 different colored sequins on them. Each sequin is applied by hand and takes about 20 hours to re-sequin.

One of the world’s favorite modern marvels, by Cirque du Soleil is the unprecedented epic production that takes adventure to an all new level. Be inspired by a dynamic theatrical landscape as an entire empire appears on KÀ’s colossal stage and a captivating display of aerial acrobatics envelopes the audience. The first Cirque du Soleil production to feature a full storyline, interesting facts about KÀ include:

  • The main stage, known as the Sand-Cliff Deck, is 25’ x 50’ ft, weighs 80,000 lbs and is supported and controlled by a vertical gantry crane which can lift the deck up and down 72 feet, rotate 360 degrees and tilt from flat to 100 degrees – all at the same time.
  • KÀ uses 2,000 lbs of granulated cork to mimic beach sand.
  • Approximately 90 pyrotechnic devices are fired throughout the show.
  • There are over 10,000 active costume pieces, 1,600 of which are used for each performance.

Inspired by the concept of infinity and the elegance of water’s pure form, “O” pays tribute to the beauty of the theatre—from the simplest street performance to the most lavish of operas—where anything is possible and where the drama of life plays itself out before your very eyes. World-class acrobats, synchronized swimmers, divers and characters perform in, on, and above water to create a breathtaking experience. With many of the show’s 77 performers being from 22 different countries, fans of the show may be happy to learn that “O” is a big family and home away from home for the cast, as well as:

  • In the High Dive scene, performers jump from 60-feet above the stage into a 17-feet deep triangular section of the pool.
  • The pool contains 1.5 million gallons of water that can be transformed into a dry stage in a matter of seconds. The water is kept at 88 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The underwater communication system features 26 speakers, which allow the performers to hear the music, cues and instructions while underwater.
  • Around 1,200 costume and headpieces are used in every performance. The lifespan of some costume items is only six weeks.

Fans are invited to tune in on Friday, Aug. 21, at 12 p.m. PT / 3p.m. ET on the CirqueConnect content hub at The special will remain available on the Cirque du Soleil CirqueConnect content hub for those who are not able to tune in live for the premiere viewing.

Trove of Ice Age Fossils Found in Carson City Backyard Now at Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Trove of Ice Age Fossils Found in Carson City Backyard Now at Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Tom Gordon of Carson City, Nevada was digging a trench for a water line in his backyard when he began to find bones that turned out to be the remains of Ice Age herbivores. Mr. Gordon’s daughter contacted Nevada paleontologist, Dr. Steve Rowland, an Emeritus Geology Professor at UNLV and Lab Manager at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. In June, Rowland, Gordon, and UNLV PhD student, Eric Chameroy, spent a week digging up the fossils. Rowland and Chameroy are now studying and cataloging the collection at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Visitors to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum are invited to stop by the Richard A. Ditton Learning Lab to see the fossils and meet the paleontologists who are currently studying them, Monday through Friday from 9am – 4pm.

“The bones of several individual animals are present in the fossil assemblage,” Rowland said, “but almost all of them appear to belong to the same species. The frustrating thing is that we aren’t completely sure yet what species they belong to! We did not recover any well-preserved skulls, which is the most useful part of an animal’s skeleton for identification purposes, so we have not yet been able to unequivocally identify the species.“

Rowland added that the animal whose bones most closely match the shapes of the Carson City bones, is a musk ox―a long-haired, cow-like animal that lives in Alaska and northern Canada. Musk oxen might seem to be unlikely animals to live in Nevada, but there were two species of musk oxen―both of which are now extinct―that lived throughout much of the U.S. during the Ice Age. Fossils of one of the extinct musk ox species―called the ‘shrub ox’―have been found in a cave north of Reno. The other extinct species―the ‘helmeted musk ox’―has never been reported to occur in Nevada, but it is well known from western Utah, Idaho, and Colorado.

“There is no reason the helmeted musk ox wouldn’t also have lived in Nevada,” Rowland said, “and I strongly suspect that we have the fossils that will ultimately show that it was here.” The helmeted musk ox went extinct about 11,000 years ago. The age of the Carson City fossils is not yet known, but a sample has been sent to a radiocarbon lab for analysis. “I’m guessing it will be around 18,000 to 20,000 years,” he said. “That is the age of the Last Glacial Maximum, when the Earth’s climate was the coldest it had been for the past 100,000 years. It would have been a good time for musk oxen to inhabit Nevada, at the latitude of Carson City.”

Rowland and Chameroy will eventually take some of the fossils to the University of Utah Museum in Salt Lake City, to compare them with fossils that have previously been identified to the level of species. They are also planning a return trip to Carson City to continue excavation.

It has not yet been determined where the Carson City bones will ultimately end up. “They should definitely stay in Nevada. Ideally, they should be permanently housed and displayed in a museum close to where we excavated them,” Rowland said. “They are part of Nevada’s natural heritage. They need to be kept where members of the public can see them and other scientists can examine them”

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum began in 1989 with a small group of citizens who knew the community would benefit from the educational resources it could provide. After very humble beginnings, this private non-profit museum is now a Smithsonian Affiliate, accredited with the American Alliance of Museums, and is a federal and state repository for fossils and artifacts. From the desert to the ocean, from Nevada to Africa, from prehistoric times to the present, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum takes visitors of all ages on a learning adventure around the world.

Don McLean performs at the ‘C’Ya On The Flipside II’ concert, benefitting The Troy Gentry Foundation, at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN. (February 5, 2020) // Photo by Jeremy Westby

50 years after he wrote the song, Don McLean is ready to tell the story of “American Pie.”

The singer-songwriter has announced plans for a feature documentary, “The Day The Music Died: The Story Behind Don McLean’s American Pie,” set for release at the end of 2021.

The project will also inform a new stage play that will revolve around McLean’s deep catalog (which includes “Vincent,” “Castles in the Air” and “Wonderful Baby”), as well as a children’s book based on his most famous song.

There’s good reason for all of this activity. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the release of “American Pie,” an eight-and-a-half-minute epic that chronicled – somewhat cryptically – the politics, youth culture and defining events of the ’50s and ’60s.

“I was looking for a big idea to write a big song, about a big country,” McLean tells The Tennessean. “And I didn’t want to write ‘This Land is Your Land’ or ‘America the Beautiful’ or something like that. So I came up with this idea that politics and music influence one another and flow parallel together, forward.”

But even as the documentary aims to tell “the story behind” the song, it won’t crack the codes of its six dense verses – though the public generally agrees on many of its allusions, touching on everything from Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan to Altamont and Charles Manson.

At 74, McLean says he doesn’t want to turn analyzing the song into “a board game.”

“It’s not poetic, and I don’t want to do it. That’s been the reason why. But I am going to get behind the song, and I’m sure that I’ll reveal a whole lot about just how it was created, and what was going on in my life. It’ll be my story, also.”

“Don has a brilliant spiritual and practical view of what it meant to him, but everyone across the globe has made their own interpretation of what the words mean to them,” says Spencer Proffer, the documentary’s producer.

“And I think that’s kind of magical.”

Proffer also produced a 2015 documentary on Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance,” speaking to the likes of Maya Angelou, Brian Wilson and Vince Gill about the song’s impact. He anticipates a similar approach with “The Day The Music Died,” and points to the many prominent artists who have covered “American Pie” over the years, including Madonna and Garth Brooks.

Through interviews, they’ll explore “what (the song) meant to them then, what it means to them now, and what it will mean to generations in the future,” Proffer says.

“I think that’s really provocative, and I think you can only do it with a song this great and this deep, with an artist that’s this sensitive, like Don McLean.”

Development on the stage play will be helmed by Broadway producers Corey Brunish (“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”) and Russell Miller, who’ve formed a joint venture with Proffer’s company. Proffer says they’re aiming for a 2022 debut.

“It’s going to be a story pretty much like my life has been,” McLean says. “And it’s going to be using many of my songs, as well as (“American Pie”) being the touchstone. So it’s got to be something that the average person is going to feel good about seeing, like ‘Jersey Boys’ or the Temptations show that’s out there now. But I hope it’ll be a little bit better than that…not too obvious and not too easy.”

Until the coronavirus shut down the concert industry, McLean had kept a busy touring schedule in recent years, including a performance at the Grand Ole Opry House in February. He sat down with Dan Rather for an in-depth discussion of “American Pie” earlier this year.

He’s also continued to deny allegations of abuse made by his ex-wife, Patrisha McLean, whom he divorced in 2016. Patrisha has talked about their relationship in a traveling exhibit about domestic violence, “Finding Our Voices,” and has established a non-profit of the same name.

For now, McLean says he’s enjoying the break that the coronavirus has imposed.

“I can’t believe I got to see a pandemic. It’s one more thing in my long life that I’ve experienced.”

He was 24 when he wrote “American Pie,” looking back on a decade defined by revolution and upheaval.

Asked about those who are that age now, in the midst of a momentous year, McLean says, “I think they need music very much right now.”

“We need songs that people can cling to, and get emotional security from. They’re not like buildings. Buildings can get knocked down. Statues get turned over. But songs live forever. You can ban my song if you want to, but there will be a million people that know it by heart.”

About Don McLean:
Don McLean is a Grammy award honoree, a Songwriter Hall of Fame member, a BBC Lifetime Achievement award recipient, and his smash hit “American Pie” resides in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry and was named by the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) a top 5 song of the 20th Century. A New York native, Don McLean is one of the most revered and respected songwriters in American history. After paying his dues in the New York club scene in the late ‘60s, he went on to score mega-hits like “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” “Castles in the Air” and many more. His catalog of songs have been recorded by Madonna, Garth Brooks, Josh Groban, Drake, Weird “Al” Yankovic, and countless others. In 2015, one of McLean’s four handwritten manuscripts of the lyrics to “American Pie” was auctioned by Christies, selling for just over $1.2 Million. 2019 honored Don with a star on the Las Vegas Walkway of Stars and his song “And I Love You So” was the theme for Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s wedding. Now in 2020, Don signed a recording contract with Time Life to release his catalog of recordings as well as the much anticipated new album Still Playin’ Favorites, which will be released in the Fall. “American Pie” will be featured in the Avengers Black Widow and the Tom Hanks movie BIOS and much more to be announced. And when you think things are slowing down, not so for Don McLean! 2021 will mark the 50th anniversary of American Pie with a World Tour to follow.

UNLV ATHLETICS NEWS: Department To Begin Welcoming Back Student-Athletes To Campus Monday

Phase I of Return To Play Plan to begin with voluntary workouts that adhere to state and local health guidelines

Phase I Return To Play Training Video

UNLV Athletics, in accordance with guidelines from the State of Nevada, the Southern Nevada Health District, the UNLV COVID-19 Management Team, the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA, will begin to welcome back student-athletes to campus Monday for voluntary workouts.

Student-athletes in the sports of football, women’s soccer and volleyball may return starting on June 8, while those from men’s and women’s basketball, cross country and men’s soccer may return no earlier than June 15.

“We are encouraged by this first important step,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “We have been working daily under the guidelines of our state, our campus and with the expertise from our Head Team Physician, Medical Director and Associate Professor at the UNLV School of Medicine Dr. Wade Gaal, and Brian Labus, Assistant Professor at the UNLV School of Public Health, who serves on the UNLV COVID-19 Management Team as well as the Governor’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Team. We have been thoughtful and methodical in defining our process in this phased-in approach.

“We are appreciative of the University’s COVID Management Team for their leadership and guidance throughout this process. Taking into account the best practices and industry standards of national and world sporting organizations with the health and safety of student-athletes and staff being our number one priority and at the forefront of our decision making, our Recovery Task Force evaluated input at multiple levels. The primary focus was to map out a return to campus in a way that provides a safe and healthy environment for our student-athletes and mitigates risk, while preserving our mission.”

“We are looking forward to our student-athletes having the opportunity to train under the precautions and policies constructed to ensure the highest level of safety,” Dr. Gaal said. “It is critical that each and every student-athlete has an understanding of these policies and takes them to heart so that we can maintain the standard of care that is necessary to continue towards competition. This is only the beginning and the better we are with adhering to these policies, the better we will be in making the return to competitive sports a reality.”

“The goal of the first phase of Return to Play is to allow our student-athletes to begin workouts, while mitigating the risk that comes with the slow resumption of campus activities,” Labus said. “By limiting the number of people in our facilities, minimizing contact between them, and ensuring that we meet the highest standards of cleaning and sanitation, our student-athletes can safely begin to prepare for their upcoming seasons. We will continue to update our approach to match current best practices in order to provide the safest environment possible for our student-athletes as they return to campus.”

The following guidelines have been implemented regarding the return of student-athletes to campus:

  • All student-athletes must self-quarantine for 14 days prior to any voluntary workouts.
  • All student-athletes, performance staff and coaches will undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing.
  • Student-athletes will be required to complete daily symptom screening and temperature checks upon entering a facility for a workout. A strict ingress/egress protocol has been established.
  • All social distancing and cleanliness protocols must be strictly adhered.
  • All student-athletes will be provided with cloth facial coverings and will be required to wear them at all times, following social distancing protocols; with the only exceptions during workouts.
  • All newcomers must complete high school graduation requirements and full physicals prior to workouts.
  • All student-athletes and staff must complete mandatory protocol training.
  • Limited laundry services will be provided in a systematic manner but locker rooms will remain closed until further notice.
  • Robust and enhanced sanitation procedures have been put in place.
  • All other dates for the return of other sports are to be determined.

As this is an ever-evolving situation, UNLV Athletics will continue to employ all available resources and amend as needed as further information is made available and based on guidance from the State of Nevada, the SNHD, the UNLV COVID-19 Management Team, the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA.

Feature Film/Miniseries Based on the Life of Siegfried & Roy Proceeds with UFA Fiction

The authorized biopic telling the life-story of Siegfried & Roy, who also serve as Executive Producers, will continue on schedule despite the recent passing of Roy Horn from complications of COVID-19 last week. The emotional story will cover their life together and how they influenced each other to achieve world-renowned success.

Nico Hofmann and Sebastian Werninger on behalf of UFA Fiction, confirmed the script by award-winning writer/director Michael Bully Herbig is in its final stages and pre-production will begin after its completion. The project has been in development with Siegfried & Roy and UFA for more than two years. The biopic will be distributed as a feature film in theaters and expanded to a limited series for television.

“Roy and I worked closely with Nico and Bully to tell the story of our life together, on and off stage,” said Siegfried Fischbacher. “This will be our personal and emotional journey that could only be told as we looked back over how the connection between us built our career and led to our achievements. Now that Roy is gone, this movie will be the ultimate tribute to the truly special person Roy was not just to me but to our audiences and fans.”

UFA CEO Nico Hofmann has been personally involved in the film’s creation and is also executive producing.

“Roy’s death deeply affected me,” said Hofmann. “Roy had so much power and an incredible energy. He only had one motto: ‘Always live your dreams!’  His strength and duration inspired us all – including just recently when we met in February with Michael Bully Herbig to further refine the vision for the film. This film will be our legacy for him. Together with Siegfried we will shoot the biopic – and Roy’s spirit will guide us.”

“Ever since I saw my first Siegfried & Roy show in the early nineties at The Mirage in Las Vegas, I was spellbound.“ said Michael Bully Herbig.“Telling the story of these two exceptional artists to a large audience makes me very happy and is proof that dreams do come true, like Roy used to say. I am very grateful for their trust.“

Helping our community help our pets during this difficult and ever-changing time

As we approach April tomorrow and the continuation of the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on our pets and shelter pets, we at Hearts Alive Village wanted to share an update for those looking to be heroes during this time.

We remain staffed for business at our pet supply store. However, to further protect our employees, our volunteers, and customers, we will  be conducting curbside sales. For interest in an animal, please  prior to stopping by Hearts Alive Village (1750 South Rainbow Blvd., Suite #4). We can set an appointment and coordinate a meet.

There are many dogs and cats in foster homes who are still available for adoption. We work to keep our website updated with available pets. We have a reduced number of animals at our adoption center in careful consideration for any emergencies that may arise. Our adoption center is still home for more than a dozen cats and a few dogs still needing to be placed with adopters or fosters, the need remains even though it may be changing with the fluidity of the times and the situation.

We are, like all those around us, endorsing self- isolation for everyone who can do this, it is the safest way to try and get through these troubling times.  However, our most vulnerable (pets, elderly, veterans) still need help to get on the other side and we hope that will be sooner than later.  The need is greater now than ever for pet food to help those struggling households. We are still engaging volunteers who can deliver food and supplies to those who have pets and cannot get out to get the supplies and food they need or are finding themselves unable to afford such necessary items.  If you are finding yourselves with some extra time during this period, please volunteer with us or any other cause that may be close to your heart.  There are so many heroes among us, some seen and some doing their work more quietly – we owe a debt of gratitude to all of them and to those who will step up in the coming days.

About Hearts Alive Village

Hearts Alive Village is a non-profit 501(c)(3) located in the heart of Las Vegas, Nevada, founded in 2013 out of an intense need to help save dogs and cats that were losing their lives in an overcrowded shelter system. We provide medical treatment, a safe and comfortable place to heal, and adoption services with a passion for senior pet placement at two centrally located facilities.  Our mission is to secure loving and stable homes for dogs and cats at risk of being lost in the shelter system.

Our main objective is to keep animals out of the shelter in the first place by supporting struggling, low-income pet owners. We maintain a pet food bank, offer low cost spay/neuter and other medical services, and help to responsibly re-home, as well as provide educational and training resources. For more information, to make a donation, adopt a pet, or volunteer, please call 702-595-0644,  visit or follow on Instagram @heartsaliveanimalrescue.

“We consider Bruno Mars as part of the MGM family and appreciate what he is doing to help our employees and their families during these uncertain times,” said Bill Hornbuckle, Acting CEO and President of MGM Resorts International. “We recently expanded the eligibility requirements for the fund to help as many employees as we can who are impacted by the crisis, and this donation will help us expand our reach even further.”
