UNLV ATHLETICS TO BEGIN WELCOMING BACK STUDENT-ATHLETES TO CAMPUS MONDAY

Phase I of Return To Play Plan to begin with voluntary workouts that adhere to state and local health guidelines

UNLV Athletics, in accordance with guidelines from the State of Nevada, the Southern Nevada Health District, the UNLV COVID-19 Management Team, the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA, will begin to welcome back student-athletes to campus Monday for voluntary workouts.

 

Student-athletes in the sports of football, women’s soccer and volleyball may return starting on June 8, while those from men’s and women’s basketball, cross country and men’s soccer may return no earlier than June 15.

 

“We are encouraged by this first important step,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “We have been working daily under the guidelines of our state, our campus and with the expertise from our Head Team Physician, Medical Director and Associate Professor at the UNLV School of Medicine Dr. Wade Gaal, and Brian Labus, Assistant Professor at the UNLV School of Public Health, who serves on the UNLV COVID-19 Management Team as well as the Governor’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Team. We have been thoughtful and methodical in defining our process in this phased-in approach.

 

“We are appreciative of the University’s COVID Management Team for their leadership and guidance throughout this process. Taking into account the best practices and industry standards of national and world sporting organizations with the health and safety of student-athletes and staff being our number one priority and at the forefront of our decision making, our Recovery Task Force evaluated input at multiple levels. The primary focus was to map out a return to campus in a way that provides a safe and healthy environment for our student-athletes and mitigates risk, while preserving our mission.”

 

“We are looking forward to our student-athletes having the opportunity to train under the precautions and policies constructed to ensure the highest level of safety,” Dr. Gaal said. “It is critical that each and every student-athlete has an understanding of these policies and takes them to heart so that we can maintain the standard of care that is necessary to continue towards competition. This is only the beginning and the better we are with adhering to these policies, the better we will be in making the return to competitive sports a reality.”

 

“The goal of the first phase of Return to Play is to allow our student-athletes to begin workouts, while mitigating the risk that comes with the slow resumption of campus activities,” Labus said. “By limiting the number of people in our facilities, minimizing contact between them, and ensuring that we meet the highest standards of cleaning and sanitation, our student-athletes can safely begin to prepare for their upcoming seasons. We will continue to update our approach to match current best practices in order to provide the safest environment possible for our student-athletes as they return to campus.”

 

The following guidelines have been implemented regarding the return of student-athletes to campus:

  • All student-athletes must self-quarantine for 14 days prior to any voluntary workouts.
  • All student-athletes, performance staff and coaches will undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing.
  • Student-athletes will be required to complete daily symptom screening and temperature checks upon entering a facility for a workout. A strict ingress/egress protocol has been established.
  • All social distancing and cleanliness protocols must be strictly adhered.
  • All student-athletes will be provided with cloth facial coverings and will be required to wear them at all times, following social distancing protocols; with the only exceptions during workouts.
  • All newcomers must complete high school graduation requirements and full physicals prior to workouts.
  • All student-athletes and staff must complete mandatory protocol training.
  • Limited laundry services will be provided in a systematic manner but locker rooms will remain closed until further notice.
  • Robust and enhanced sanitation procedures have been put in place.
  • All other dates for the return of other sports are to be determined.

As this is an ever-evolving situation, UNLV Athletics will continue to employ all available resources and amend as needed as further information is made available and based on guidance from the State of Nevada, the SNHD, the UNLV COVID-19 Management Team, the Mountain West Conference and the NCAA.

The authorized biopic telling the life-story of Siegfried & Roy, who also serve as Executive Producers, will continue on schedule despite the recent passing of Roy Horn from complications of COVID-19 last week. The emotional story will cover their life together and how they influenced each other to achieve world-renowned success.

 

Nico Hofmann and Sebastian Werninger on behalf of UFA Fiction, confirmed the script by award-winning writer/director Michael Bully Herbig is in its final stages and pre-production will begin after its completion. The project has been in development with Siegfried & Roy and UFA for more than two years. The biopic will be distributed as a feature film in theaters and expanded to a limited series for television.

 

“Roy and I worked closely with Nico and Bully to tell the story of our life together, on and off stage,” said Siegfried Fischbacher. “This will be our personal and emotional journey that could only be told as we looked back over how the connection between us built our career and led to our achievements. Now that Roy is gone, this movie will be the ultimate tribute to the truly special person Roy was not just to me but to our audiences and fans.”

 

UFA CEO Nico Hofmann has been personally involved in the film’s creation and is also executive producing.

The fund is designed to assist those impacted by the coronavirus, including full-time employees, on-call employees and those facing layoff, separation or furlough.

Helping our community help our pets during this difficult and ever-changing time

 

As we approach April tomorrow and the continuation of the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on our pets and shelter pets, we at Hearts Alive Village wanted to share an update for those looking to be heroes during this time.

 

We remain staffed for business at our pet supply store. However, to further protect our employees, our volunteers, and customers, we will  be conducting curbside sales. For interest in an animal, please info@heartsalivevillage.org  prior to stopping by Hearts Alive Village (1750 South Rainbow Blvd., Suite #4). We can set an appointment and coordinate a meet.

 

There are many dogs and cats in foster homes who are still available for adoption. We work to keep our website updated with available pets. www.heartsalivevillage.org. We have a reduced number of animals at our adoption center in careful consideration for any emergencies that may arise. Our adoption center is still home for more than a dozen cats and a few dogs still needing to be placed with adopters or fosters, the need remains even though it may be changing with the fluidity of the times and the situation.

 

We are, like all those around us, endorsing self- isolation for everyone who can do this, it is the safest way to try and get through these troubling times.  However, our most vulnerable (pets, elderly, veterans) still need help to get on the other side and we hope that will be sooner than later.  The need is greater now than ever for pet food to help those struggling households. We are still engaging volunteers who can deliver food and supplies to those who have pets and cannot get out to get the supplies and food they need or are finding themselves unable to afford such necessary items.  If you are finding yourselves with some extra time during this period, please volunteer with us or any other cause that may be close to your heart.  There are so many heroes among us, some seen and some doing their work more quietly – we owe a debt of gratitude to all of them and to those who will step up in the coming days.

BRUNO MARS PLEDGES $1 MILLION TO THE MGM RESORTS FOUNDATION FOR MGM EMPLOYEE EMERGENCY GRANT FUND & CHILDREN’S MEDICAL SUPPORT FUND

 

GRAMMY Award-winning entertainer Bruno Mars, who has been a performer at the Park MGM theater, announced today that he has donated $1 million to the MGM Resorts Foundation to support MGM employees impacted economically by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

 

Mars has performed a series of limited dates at The Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas since 2016.

 

A representative for Mars says, “The people at MGM have given Bruno Mars the rare opportunity to be able to continuously gig while he’s in the creative process of working on his next album. With the closures across Las Vegas, Bruno wanted to show his appreciation to the amazing employees who help make these shows possible in hopes that we’ll all be out of this situation and having fun together again very soon.”

 

The money will go toward The MGM Resorts Foundation’s Employee Emergency Grant Fund & Children’s Medical Support Fund, which is designed to help MGM employees and their immediate families with short-term assistance during unexpected hardships and emergencies. The Grant Fund may also provide disaster relief assistance to furloughed or laid-off employees whose compensation is suspended or employment terminated as a result of an extraordinary event (or events) that severely impacts a community in which MGM Resorts conducts business, such as the COVID-19 public health crisis. 

 

“We consider Bruno Mars as part of the MGM family and appreciate what he is doing to help our employees and their families during these uncertain times,” said Bill Hornbuckle, Acting CEO and President of MGM Resorts International. “We recently expanded the eligibility requirements for the fund to help as many employees as we can who are impacted by the crisis, and this donation will help us expand our reach even further.”

The Pop-Up Market Will Feature Essentials Including Eggs, Milk and Toilet Paper

The Stove located in Henderson is launching a temporary pop-up market as an effort to aid their guests in need. With the high demand for essentials such as eggs, milk, and toilet paper, and scarce conditions at local supermarkets, The Stove felt the need to fill a void in their neighborhood.

“We do not wish to see our guests and the elderly community go without due to these times of uncertainty,” said Executive Chef and Part Owner Antonio Nunez. “The current scenes at local grocery stores may be too stressful for seniors to endure, and buying in bulk may not be feasible for individuals, so we wanted to offer an alternative.”

The Stove plans to sell their overstock of items through depletion, but they do warn guests that there is a limit on items to avoid hoarding. The household items that will be sold include:

  • Local farm fresh milk ($5.50/gallon)

  • Local farm fresh eggs ($3.50/dozen)

  • Toilet paper ($1.50/roll)

  • Fettuccine ($2/pound)

  • Instant oatmeal (.40 cents)

  • Canned chicken broth ($5.50/50oz.)

  • Chicken soup ($1.25/7.25oz.)

  • Tomato soup ($5.50/50oz.)

  • Gatorade ($1.50/20oz.)

  • Half & half ($4/qt.)

  • Butter ($1.75/stick)

  • Hand sanitizer ($4/2oz.)

Items will be available for purchase as soon as March 17th at The Stove’s pop-up market which will take place inside their private dining room. Priority will be given to their senior guests and availability is based on a first-come-first-serve basis. The market hours are Monday-Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., or until stock runs out.

The UNLV men’s basketball team, winner of three of its last four games, will head back out on the road to face the nation’s only unbeaten team in No. 4 San Diego State on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. at Viejas Arena in San Diego.

The Runnin’ Rebels are coming off their most complete performance of the year, as they defeated Colorado State, 80-56, Wednesday night at home. In that contest, UNLV led by as many as 35 points en route to its largest margin of victory of the season. Prior to that, the Runnin’ Rebels defeated New Mexico, 78-73, at The Pit last Saturday, lost a home to UNR, 82-79, in a program-record sixth overtime game of the season on Feb. 12, and defeated Fresno State by a point, 68-67 on Feb. 8 on a last-second shot by sophomore guard Marvin Coleman.

Sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton and junior guard Amauri Hardy lead the Runnin’ Rebels (14-14, 9-6) in scoring, averaging 15.6 and 14.0 points per game, respectively. Hamilton has scored in double figures in 15 straight games and has tallied 23 or more in six of his last nine outings. Junior forward Mbacke Diong is the team’s leading rebounder with 8.1 per contest (4th in MW). UNLV is under new leadership this year in head coach T.J. Otzelberger.

SDSU (26-0, 15-0) is in its third season under its head coach, Brian Dutcher. The Aztecs are led by Malachi Flynn’s 16.7 ppg (5th in MW) and Yanni Wetzell’s 6.5 rpg (8th in MW). Flynn also leads the team and league in assists (5.1 apg). SDSU is coming off a 72-55 road win at Boise State on Sunday.

SDSU won the season’s first meeting between the two teams, 71-67, in Las Vegas on Jan. 26.

Sophomore guard honored by conference after recording first triple-double by a Runnin’ Rebel in 20 years and career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals in wins over San Jose State and New Mexico

UNLV sophomore Marvin Coleman was named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is his first career weekly honor and the second for a Runnin’ Rebel player this season.

 

Originally from Las Vegas, the 6-foot-2-inch guard averaged 14.0 points, 9.5 assists, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game last week in home wins over San Jose State (98-87) and New Mexico (99-78). He also shot 91 percent from the free-throw line (11 of 12), while playing an average of 35.5 minutes per contest.

 

After scoring a career-high 17 points against San Jose State on Wednesday with a then-career-high eight assists, he recorded UNLV’s first triple-double in more than 20 years as he scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 11 assists (with only two turnovers) against New Mexico on Saturday. It marked just the fifth triple-double in Mountain West history and first since 2016.

 

Coleman’s 12 rebounds and 11 assists were both career highs, as were his six steals against the Lobos. UNLV’s last triple-double occurred on Nov. 19, 1999 as Mark Dickel had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists vs. Mississippi Valley State.

 

UNLV’s two wins last week were its fifth- and sixth-straight at home and improved its Mountain West record to 6-1, which is its best league start in 12 years. The home win streak is its longest in five years, and overall, UNLV has won three straight games and seven of its last eight.

 

NEXT FOR UNLV: The Runnin’ Rebels (11-9, 6-1) will travel to Reno, Nevada, to play at UNR on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The 8 p.m. game will be televised by CBS Sports Network. FERRARO’S ANNOUNCES ITALIAN-STYLE BIG GAME VIEWING PARTY, SUNDAY, FEB. 2 

Featuring an Italian Buffet and Unlimited Beer and Wine

 Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar invites sports fans to experience an incredible Italian-style Big Game viewing party on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2:30 p.m. Enjoy the game from Ferraro’s lounge while enjoying an extensive Italian buffet of premium appetizers, delicious main course options and authentic Italian specialties prepared by Executive Chef Francesco DiCaudo. The Italian feast also includes unlimited beer and wine. Tickets for the all-inclusive experience are $75 per person and space is limited.

For guests seeking an exclusive private viewing party, Ferraro’s is pleased to offer two exclusive options: one private viewing room for up to 16 guests and one private viewing room for up to 60 guests. Both private viewing options include a full-service staff featuring a private Italian buffet and unlimited wine and beer for the entire group. Tickets for the all-inclusive experience are $100 per person.
