Two conference honorees return for the Lady Rebels for the 2019-20 season
UNLV women’s basketball was picked seventh in the 2019-20 Mountain West preseason poll that was released by the league office Thursday. Voting on the preseason poll, as well as the preseason all-conference team, were all 11 head coaches as well as select media members.
The Lady Rebels, who finished tied for fifth a year ago, return just 32% of its scoring from a year ago after graduating four senior starters and one key backup. Among the returnees however is 2018-19 Mountain West 6th Player of the Year Rodjanae Wade, a senior center who was third on the team in scoring with 8.1 ppg and second in rebounding with 5.9 rpg. Another key returnee is junior guard Bailey Thomas, a starter who earned All-MW Defensive team honors a year ago. The Lady Rebels will also feature a top-60 ranked six-member freshman class.
Defending champion Boise State is the preseason favorite with 305 points and 25 first place votes, while New Mexico had three first-place votes and came second in the poll at 280. Fresno State was third with 228, Wyoming fourth (20), San Diego State fifth (185) and Colorado State sixth (185). Following the Lady Rebels was Utah State in eighth (116), just one vote ahead of UNR (115). Air Force was 10th (85), while San Jose State rounded out the poll in 11th with 77 points.
The Lady Rebels will play another challenging schedule this season, starting with the season opener against Cal State Fullerton Nov. 9 in the Thomas & Mack Center, followed by another game in the TMC five days later against Duke (Nov. 14). Other highlights of the schedule includes a road game at USC (Dec. 14) and the Duel In the Desert tournament in December, in which UNLV host Virginia (Dec. 20) and then either preseason top-10 Mississippi State or USF Dec. 21. The Lady Rebels open the MW season right after Thanksgiving, with a home contest against Fresno State Dec. 3.
