This January brings the start of the spring 2020 season at Black Mountain Institute (BMI), inviting the Las Vegas community to connect with literary luminaries and emerging talent through a series of readings and conversations. Locals, visitors, and writers alike are welcomed to join BMI as they begin their spring season and continue their mission to enliven, support and connect the Las Vegas community through their work with highly-acclaimed literary visionaries.
The Communal West: Terry Tempest Williams in Conversation with Téa Obreht

Terry Tempest Williams, a passionate activist and conservationist whose work is rooted in the landscape and the spiritual traditions of the American West, is also a sharp-eyed critic of one of its most enduring myths: rugged individualism. From her home in Castle Valley, Utah Williams visits Las Vegas to discuss her most recent book, Erosion: Essays of Undoing, a deft intersection of assaults on public lands alongside an erosion of commitment to the open space of democracy. Williams will be interviewed on stage by Téa Obreht, author of the international bestseller The Tiger’s Wife, finalist for the National Book Award. For more information please click here.
The Believer Presents: Carmen Maria Machado in Conversation with Niela Orr

Black Mountain Institute and The Writer’s Block are proud to present Carmen Maria Machado, whose debut short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, was a finalist for the National Book Award and the winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction. Machado will read from and discuss her genre-bending memoir, In the Dream House–an account of a relationship gone toxic, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms of psychological abuse.
