FOUR REBELS COLLECT ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS
The UNLV softball team had four players recognized on the Mountain West All-MW postseason awards list, the league office announced Tuesday. Senior Ariana Martinez led with an All-Mountain West first team nod, while sophomore Jesse Farrell picked up second team honors, and senior Karmyna Becerra and freshman Yanina Sherwood garnered honorable mention.
Martinez, a San Antonio, Texas, native, closed out her senior campaign as another force to be reckoned with in the Mountain West. Martinez batted a .369 during league play which led the Rebels. She had the second-most doubles in the conference with nine and the fourth-best slugging percentage at .738. Martinez ranked top-10 in six different categories for the MW, which includes tied for second in walks (15), tied fifth in total bases (48), seventh in on-base percentage (.494), tied eighth in home runs (five), tied ninth in runs scored (18) and tied 10th in RBI (16). Not only did her bat continue to stay hot throughout the season, she was dominant at first base with 170 putouts, which ranked second in the league. Additionally, she was tied second in fielding double plays. This marked the fourth straight All-MW first team honor.
Farrell, the hometown Henderson, Nevada native, was the home run leader for the Rebels during MW play with a team-high six, which ranked tied for sixth in the league standings. Farrell batted a .338 in conference play, which was third on the squad and led the Scarlet & Gray in runs scored (20) which was good for sixth in the MW. In league play, Farrell had a .691 slugging percentage that ranked second on the team and seventh in the conference. She split time at shortstop and behind the plate for the Rebels in MW play, having played 14 games at short and eight at catcher. This marked the first All-MW honor for Farrell.
Becerra, an El Centro, California native, made her name known in the MW in just her first season with the Rebels. Becerra played all 22 league games at third base with a .944 fielding percentage. Becerra led the MW and the team in doubles with 10 to go with a .342 batting average. She was the leader in total bases with 10, which ranked fourth in the league, and the leader in hits with 26. Additionally, Becerra led the Rebels in RBI with 19, ninth in the MW, and had the Scarlet & Gray’s lone triple during league play. During MW play, Becerra roped a grand slam against Boise State that tied the game. Her grand slam was the only one for UNLV during the entire 2025 campaign. This marked the first All-MW honor.
Sherwood, a Mill Creek, Washington native, led the pitching staff for the Rebels in league play with a 6-5 record, which her six wins are tied for fourth in the conference. She pitched seven complete games against MW opponents including a career-high 9.0 innings in game one against San Jose State and earned a 2-1 extra innings victory. Not only did Sherwood lead UNLV in the circle, she led the league in innings pitched (91.0) and strikeouts looking (19). Sherwood struck out 49 hitters in her 91.0 innings of work, which is good for fourth in the league. Additionally, Sherwood was tied as the leader in appearances with 19 and tied second in starts, having started 13 MW games. This season, Sherwood picked up her first MW Freshman of the Week honor on April 28 after going 2-0 against Utah State with an ERA of 1.17 through 12.0 innings of work and struck out eight through her two appearances. This marked the first All-MW honor for Sherwood.
