Legendary Southern California punk rock band Pennywise returns full force with a blistering new album entitled All or Nothing via Epitaph Records this May 1st. After the departure of longtime singer Jim Lindberg, the storied band has risen from the ashes more energized and defiant than ever. Featuring new lead vocalist Zoli Teglas, All Or Nothing is a reinvigorated masterwork of the band’s state of the art sing-along melodic punk.
As guitarist Fletcher Dragge explains “If you believe in what Pennywise stands for, fighting your battles and never giving up and living your life to the fullest, then you will understand why we’re still here.”
New member Teglas adds, “I’m so stoked to be singing with Pennywise. I’m a huge fan of this band and am super grateful to be sharing the stage with my long time friends Fletcher, Byron and Randy and singing these songs.”
Pennywise were founded in the South Bay region of Los Angeles during the late eighties. The area has a prominent place in popular culture, with upstart groups like Black Flag, The Circle Jerks and Descendants merging a fast rebellious sound with the surrounding aggressive surf and skate culture. Inspired by their predecessors, Pennywise were at the forefront of a second wave of American punk rock that would catapult the movement from a tight nit subculture into a world wide movement.
Through constant touring and out of control live shows, the band built a massive and dedicated following with revered classics like the incendiary “Fuck Authority,” their powerful anthem of discontent “Alien” and the stirring ode to fallen friends “Bro Hymn,” an autobiographical song which pays tribute to the band’s founding bass player Jason Thirsk after his tragic and untimely death in 1996.
And the recent uncertainty seems to have only reinvigorated the veteran band, infusing their new album with a renewed sense of urgency and passion. You can hear it on songs like the furious title track as well as the rousing “Let Us Hear Your Voice,” an inspirational burst of classic Pennywise power.
“We knew we were up against a lot after losing our singer,” bassist Randy Bradbury says. “So we just had to make one of the best records we’ve ever made. And we may have just done that. I think it’s at least one of our best albums since Full Circle. The whole ‘nothing can keep us down’ sentiment can be a cliché, but I think we really live it both personally and as a band. There’s a real fighting spirit to this band and you can hear it loud and clear on this record.”
