UNLV cross country’s Natalia Ruiz was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It marks the first individual weekly award for the Rebels this season.

Ruiz, originally from Madrid, Spain, helped the Rebels to a first-place team finish at the San Diego City College Downey Invitational in San Diego last Friday, finishing first individually in the 5k with a course-record time of 18:01.

“We are very proud of Natalia,” UNLV Track & Field/Cross Country Head Coach Dorian Scott said. “Her career here is off to an amazing start. Breaking the course record this past weekend and winning her second consecutive competition, this award is a great way for her to close out a successful month.”

Natalia also recorded an individual win in the team’s first outing of the season at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 18.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will be back in action on Friday, October 8 at the Steve T. Reeder Memorial, hosted by Utah State in Logan.
