UNLV men’s golf senior Shintaro Ban has been named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week for competitions ending Feb. 18, the league announced Wednesday. This is Ban’s third career MW Golfer of the Month/Week accolade and his second of the season.
Ban led the Rebels in their spring season opener in Hawaii to a 2017-18 season-best tie for second place at the 20-team John Burns Intercollegiate last week. He tied for seventh individually out of 122 participants, marking his fourth top-10 finish of the season (in six events).
Ban opened the tournament with two rounds in the 60s. He shot an opening-round 7-under-par 65 to hold a two-shot lead after the first day, then carded a second-round score of 4-under 68 increasing his margin to a three-shot lead after 36 holes. Fighting an illness all week, he finished the tournament, which was played at the par 72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course in Linhue, with a final-round 79.
His finished the event at 4-under 212, with a scoring average of 70.67 per round. In 54 holes, he tallied 15 birdies and an eagle.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will be back in action on Sunday-Monday, Feb. 25-26 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
