UNLV men‘s golf senior Shintaro Ban has been named the Co-Mountain West Men‘s Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. This is Ban‘s sixth career MW Golfer of the Month/Week accolade and his fifth of the season.
Ban led the No. 23 Rebels to a second-place finish at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday as the team ended up just one shot back of host and No. 22 Arizona State.
Ban tied for medalist honors at 11-under, giving him his third individual title of the season and fourth of his career. He shot 2-under 69 during the final round, giving him three rounds in the 60s at the event. He fired a second-round-low 7-under 64 on Saturday.
Ban is now tied for fifth in UNLV men’s golf history for career individual wins with John Oda (2014-17), Derek Ernst (2008-12), Chris Riley (1992-96) and Ed Fryatt (1991-94).
Over the Thunderbird Invite’s 54 holes, Ban recorded 17 birdies and an eagle, while averaging 67.33 strokes per round. It marked his 10th top-20 finish of the season in 11 total events, his seventh top-10 and fifth top-five. The tournament featured five teams that are ranked in the top 25 of the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, including No. 1 Oklahoma State.
Ban is on track to earn his degree in economics at the end of this semester and he has been a member of the athletics department’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. An honorable mention All-America last season, he was also named an All-America Scholar. He has been named to the United States team at this summer’s Arnold Palmer Cup and is also a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, which goes to the nation’s top collegiate golfer.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will be looking for its third straight Mountain West Championship this week as the league hosts its annual tournament Friday-Sunday, April 20-22, in Bremerton, Washington.
