American Cancer Society and Construction Industry Leaders work

together vs cancer during September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

This September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society and Southern Nevada’s leading construction companies are pleased to announce that registration is now available for the 4th Annual Construction vs. Cancer Event to be held November 13, 2021 at The Silverton Casino. The event gives families across the valley the chance to come together in support of childhood cancer patients in Nevada and nationwide, and it gives Junior Operator attendees an exclusive opportunity to get in the driver’s seat and operate heavy machinery, including backhoes, diggers, and excavators (with supervision). Kids can also climb the popular Scaffolding Lookout Tower, dig in the Giant Sandbox, watch live local entertainment on the Main Stage, and help construct a cure for cancer by lending a hand at the memorable Wall of Hope art project. To stay up to date on the latest news including location and other important event details, register for complimentary general admission on the event website at www.ConstructionVsCancer.org.

Current Construction vs Cancer 2021 event sponsors and volunteers have already raised over $170,000 toward their goal to fight childhood cancer and include dedicated companies Southern Nevada Home Builders Association, NDL Group Inc., Vermeer, Hirschi Companies and many more. Information about sponsorship opportunities, volunteerism, and other related needs can be found at www. ConstructionVsCancer.org. All funds raised for the event support the American Cancer Society and our mission to saves lives, celebrates lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer through funding and conducting research, sharing expert information, supporting patients, and spreading the word about prevention. Because cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for ages 1-19, the Society currently funds 46 childhood cancer research grants totaling $27 million (as of March 1, 2021), and with funds raised each year at events like Construction vs Cancer, they are able to do so much more.

“Construction vs Cancer is my favorite event of the year. When you combine my love for the American Cancer Society and my family owning a general contracting company, the fit couldn’t be more perfect,” says Wendi Schweigart, Marketing Director at NDL Group and active member of the American Cancer Society Southern Leadership Board and Construction vs Cancer Event Leadership Committee. “For the last two years our company has been the Sandbox Sponsor, and it has brought myself, my husband, and our staff so much joy. I take great pride in being involved with the committee that plans the event, being able to work side-by-side with staff and watching our ideas turn into a dynamic and inspirational cancer-fighting event is truly a blessing.”

The 2021 Construction vs Cancer event team will also highlight the efforts of a local hero and advocate for The American Cancer Society with our Compassionate Heart Award. Each year we recognize a voice in the community that drives local support for childhood cancer patients, always with compassion to hasten the day of a world without cancer. This year, we are thrilled to honor John McLaury of KB Homes and Southern Nevada Home Builders Association (SNHBA) with the award. John’s drive and dedication to the fight against cancer through this event helps grow the impact of SNHBA in this fight. “With decades of coping with cancer, as a caregiver and a patient, I am passionate about increasing the awareness of cancer, the importance of annual physicals to catch it early enough to treat it and ultimately, finding a cure. The American Cancer Society is a terrific organization dedicated to supporting patients and caregivers, and research to develop a cure for cancer….an organization I proudly support!” says John McLaury, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for KB HOME NEVADA and is the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association Chair of their Sales and Marketing Committee.

Because the safety of all event attendees, staff and volunteers is top priority, the American Cancer Society will follow all Federal, State and Local recommendations for events and large gathering related to COVID-19.
