Breast Cancer Awareness Continues Beyond October
Comprehensive Cancer Centers and Golden Knights Star Shea Theodore
Launch ‘Kay’s Power Play’ Fund for Breast Cancer Prevention
Announced today at a ceremony in front of City National Arena, Comprehensive Cancer Centers (Comprehensive) and Vegas Golden Knights’ star defenseman Shea Theodore have teamed up to raise awareness and provide proactive measures to combat breast cancer.
A new fund has been created for Susan G. Komen Nevada known as “Kay’s Power Play.” The fund is named in Kay Darlington’s memory, who was Theodore’s grandmother and a beloved breast cancer patient at Comprehensive.
The fund will empower Southern Nevadans and serve as a critical lifeline for those needing preventative resources like mammograms. Those most in-need – including the uninsured, underinsured and patients under 40 years-old, whose mammograms are not covered by insurance – may tap into “Kay’s Power Play” for financial assistance to stay one step ahead of a potentially life-altering diagnosis.
Full details on the program are available at www.cccnevada.com/kays-power-play/.
“We have witnessed firsthand that Shea’s passion for helping the Southern Nevada community is right up there with his passion on the ice,” said Jon Bilstein, CEO of Comprehensive. “In our efforts to help folks stay one step ahead of a cancer diagnosis, he is a valuable teammate. ‘Kay’s Power Play’ will help enhance Nevada’s preventative landscape and, ultimately, save lives.”
“I’d like to thank Comprehensive and for their support in starting the Kay’s Power Play fund,” said Theodore. “This fund will help those in need of financial assistance and help them stay ahead of any cancer diagnosis. Early detection is critical in saving lives from this terrible disease.”
“We are honored to facilitate the Kay’s Power Play fund here in Nevada,” said Sherry Alexis, Development Manager of Komen Nevada. “This fund will continue to reinforce our mission of saving lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities. We are grateful to Shea Theodore and Comprehensive Cancer Centers for creating this fund and are excited the increased attention will highlight the effectiveness early detection has on saving lives here in Nevada.”
Funding for “Kay’s Power Play” totals $50,000, stemming from a donation by Theodore as well as Comprehensive’s $500 per-point pledge based on Theodore’s points scored during the 2019-2020 season.
Nevada’s mammography rate remains more than 5% below the national average, currently sitting at 67%. Approximately 2,310 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in Nevada in 2020.
