NATIONAL ATOMIC TESTING MUSEUM ANNOUNCES APRIL PROGRAMS, PROMOTIONS
The National Atomic Testing Museum (NATM) announces its roster of public programs and promotions for April.

STEM Camp: Water Wonderland
Date: April 9 through 10
Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Location: Inside the National Atomic Testing Museum.

Description: The museum invites children ages 10 to 14 interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to its Water Wonderland STEM Camp. Participants will make a delicious aquifer parfait snack, learn about water treatment steps, build a hydroponics micro garden with recycled materials, complete a coding project and explore the ways the mega drought affects the heat of the Mojave Desert as well as the health of plants, trees and shrubs. Snacks and drinks will be provided but students must bring their own lunch each day. This event is presented by NATM’s community partners, including the Desert Research Institute, Springs Preserve, University of Nevada, Reno Extension, UNLV’s Tech Trekker and The Coder School.
Distinguished Lecture Series with Angela Sheffield
Date: Saturday, April 23
Time: 1 to 3 p.m.
Location: Inside the National Atomic Testing Museum.

Description: Angela Sheffield will discuss the science as well as the science fiction of artificial intelligence. In addition, she will highlight research at the Department of Energy National Labs and across the nuclear nonproliferation community to develop AI-powered technologies transforming nuclear proliferation detection.
Speaker: Angela Sheffield is the senior program manager of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s defense nuclear nonproliferation research and development department.
Community Outreach Events
With a strong commitment to the Las Vegas community, the museum regularly participates in community outreach events. Outreach not only includes educational lessons about the history of nuclear testing but also topics related to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and more. In April, NATM will attend the following outreach events:
- Grant a Gift Autism Foundation’s 5k Race for Hope and Resource Fair on Saturday, April 9 from 7:30 to 11 a.m.
- Legacy High School presentation on post-World War II nuclear weapons testing on April 19 and 20 from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Guided Tours
To preserve and foster public accessibility to the history associated with the Nevada Test Site and the nation’s nuclear weapons program, NATM regularly hosts field trips for the Clark County School District and other collegiate institutions. In April, NATM will host the following guided tours:
- Bonanza High School students on Tuesday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- UNLV history students on Thursday, April 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Rancho High School students on Friday, April 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- UNLV history students on Saturday, April 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
- Arbor View High School students on Tuesday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- South Student Success Center students on Thursday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Historical Dates in April
- Boxcar, The Largest Announced Underground Nuclear Test at the Nevada Test Site: On April 26, 1968, the United States conducted the underground nuclear test codenamed “Boxcar” at the Nevada Test Site. The explosion had a yield of 1.3 megatons.
