United Way of Southern Nevada Names Cass Palmer as President and CEO

United Way of Southern Nevada’s board of directors announces Cass Palmer as president and chief executive officer.

“We are excited to welcome Cass Palmer to United Way and look forward to seeing the great results we know he will accomplish,” said United Way of Southern Nevada Volunteer Board Chairman Don Gibe. “Cass has an impressive record of accomplishments that made him the ideal candidate and he possesses the strong leadership skills needed to unify the organization as it continues to make a difference in southern Nevada’s community.”

Palmer brings more than 23 years of experience in the gaming and hospitality industry, government and political arenas, non-profit organizations and union environments to his new role. He will oversee staff and administer United Way’s activities designed to advocate its community-based agenda of advancing the common good by focusing on education, income and health.

“Living in Vegas for more than four decades has allowed me to understand the community’s needs. I am excited for this opportunity to help further expand upon United Way’s record of accomplishments and implement new strategies to strengthen our neighborhoods,” said Palmer.

Before joining United Way, Palmer was the senior vice president, chief human resource officer at Tropicana Entertainment Inc. During his tenure, he played an integral part in restructuring Tropicana Entertainment, which was the first major company in the gaming industry to successfully complete a Chapter 11 reorganization.

Palmer has also worked as the corporate vice president of human resources for Olympia Gaming LLC/ Southern Highlands Development Corporation, the corporate vice president of human resources for Boyd Gaming Corporation and the senior vice president of human resources at Bally’s/Park Place Entertainment.

Palmer has been involved with United Way of Southern Nevada for more than 20 years, serving as a board member, gaming campaign chairman, human resource committee member, company campaign chairman and loaned executive. He volunteers his time as the chairman of UNLV Career Advisory Council, where he is responsible for developing strategic ties between UNLV and the local business community. He also was the chairman for the State of Nevada Governors Workforce Investment Committee. In addition, he has served as a board member of the United Labor Agency of Nevada and the Nevada Council on Problem Gaming. Palmer earned his master of business administration and his bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

FOR 25TH ANNUAL “RIBBON OF LIFE” FUNDRAISING PRODUCTION

Golden Rainbow, a local HIV/AIDS nonprofit, is accepting admissions for the 25th annual “Ribbon of Life” fundraising spectacular now through Friday, April 8. Submissions will be accepted through hand delivery, mail and e-mail.

All singers, dancers, performers, artists and choreographers are invited to showcase their best original numbers for a chance to participate in one of the greatest shows of the year. The “Ribbon of Life” fundraising production will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at Paris Théâtre.

The casting call requires original production numbers that have not been previously performed in Las Vegas. All selected performances will be showcased during the 25th annual “Ribbon of Life” spectacular. Submissions may include solo, duet, small cast (fewer than 10 performers) and large cast or montage acts. All entries must be delivered to the Golden Rainbow office via hand delivery, mail or e-mail during business hours by Friday, April 8. The program takes viewers moment by moment through Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami. The program gives scientific context to the chain of events responsible for one of the most destructive disasters in recorded history with first-person accounts from those who survived, and from experts and scientists currently on the scene.

Japan’s March 11 earthquake was the world’s fourth largest earthquake since record keeping began in 1900. The tsunami rushed Japan’s coast with 30-foot waves and traveled six miles inland, wiping out entire towns in minutes.

Executive Chef Geno Bernardo of Nove Italiano inside Palms Casino Resort celebrated St. Joseph’s Day by feeding more than 700 hundred people at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada this afternoon (3.19.11). Each year, communities pay tribute to the Italian holiday by giving food to the less fortunate, a custom that has been around for centuries.

Serving his signature Nove spaghetti, Chef Geno worked with Siena Food Company to have the pasta donated and Enzo to supply the tomatoes for the marinara sauce. In addition, Las Vegas Bakery, Bon Breads donated a variety of breads and 9 Group/Palms sponsor, FIJI Water, supplied bottled water. The band recently won “Album of the Year” for their third album The Suburbs at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Montreal’s Arcade Fire explored the theme of neighborhoods on their 2004 breakthrough album Funeral (chosen by Rolling Stone as the No. 1 album of the decade). In 2009, frontman Win Butler received an e-mail from an old friend he grew up with in the suburbs of Houston. At the same time, other band members of a similarly suburban origin across Canada had revisited their childhood environments and in some cases found there was not much left. Buildings were boarded up, if they still existed at all, new roads and rivers had magically appeared, altering the landscape that now only existed in faded photographs. When they reconvened, the first song they wrote was The Suburbs’ title track. As The Suburbs started to take shape, a cohesive group of songs emerged including themes of loss and renewal, drawing inspiration from scarcity, generations past and future, responsibility and maturity and hoping that something pure can last.

On Sunday, March 13, Executive Chef Barry S. Dakake of N9NE Steakhouse at Palms Casino Resort had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch during the Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game at Cashman Field for Big League Weekend.

Dakake brought the heat with a perfect pitch right down the middle of home plate in front of a roaring crowd of more than 11,000 Dodgers and Cubs fans. Players, managers and coaches were gracious enough to pose for pictures and sign autographs for fans including Dakake. Mingling with Alfonso Soriano, outfielder for the Chicago Cubs, Kosuke Fukudome, outfielder for the Chicago Cubs and Don Mattingly, the new skipper for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Dakake invited them to dine at N9NE Steakhouse next time they were in Las Vegas.

Blue Man Group, the international entertainment phenomenon, is holding a casting call for talented performers to portray Blue Men in its existing and upcoming productions and multimedia projects. All casting call appointments will be by invitation only and will be held on Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12.

The casting call is part of a national search to find performers who possess the rare combination of talents that qualifies them to portray Blue Men. Both male and female performers are encouraged to audition for Blue Man Group. Some of the basic criteria for Blue Man auditioners include:

· Height between 5’10” and 6’2” tall (athletic build)
· Excellent acting/physical theater/improvisation skills
· Drumming skills are an advantage but a good sense of rhythm is necessary
· Willingness to relocate if necessary
