AFWERX Vegas Inspires Innovation Through Two-Day Conference

AFWERX Vegas Inspires Innovation Through Two-Day Conference

AFWERX Vegas, a catalyst for innovation within the Air Force, gave attendees the tools to drive growth and shift paradigms during AFWERX Fusion Xperience, a two-day conference and technology expo at Enclave Las Vegas. The public event combined insightful presentations and workshops with demonstrations of cutting-edge technology to showcase AFWERX’s mission of problem-solving through collaboration and innovation.

Maj. Gen. Bradley D. Spacey of the U.S. Air Force put it best, “Our job is to build the structure and culture of innovation. We have to convince and teach innovators that their innovative ideas are scalable and reachable.” He continued, “The most junior people within the Air Force may have the most knowledge, but don’t have the authority to take their innovations to the next level. We aim to change that.”

Enticing activations throughout Enclave demonstrated AFWERX Vegas’ commitment to innovation. Upon entering the space, attendees were immersed in a tech-forward setting with humanoid robots on display from UNLV and a competitive robot anyone could challenge to a game of Perfection. Attendees began networking and making new connections underneath laser-projected logos in the lobby and logged on to the Fusion Xperience mobile app to lay out their schedule for the event.

Keynotes and Speakers

Brian Maue, CEO of AFWERX, provided opening remarks and introduced attendees to the Fusion Xperience with the goal of bringing together small businesses, entrepreneurs and academia to source innovative solutions for the Air Force. The first collection of keynotes from Lt. Gen. Jerry Harris of Headquarters Air Force and John Bunch of Zappos illustrated the need for innovation across government and commercial entities and how the two can work together.

The theme of spurring innovation continued with Jeff Schumacher, CEO and Founder of BCG Ventures, who provides a unique take on venture capital by both inventing and investing. His tools for success are based around his concept of solving frictions, or addressing specific problems. Friction drives growth and companies should be on the lookout for what pain points within a market they have the ability to alleviate.

Jason Korman spoke to instilling innovation within an organization by initiating culture change. In order to do this, the set beliefs and mindsets of the group must be articulated and visualized for stronger association and connection. As CEO and Co-Founder of Gapingvoid, Korman utilizes graphics and art to help convey these ideas and start a social narrative. Korman emphasized culture change comes from socializing with a purpose, and organizations must work from both top down and bottom up to make a difference.

During the most crowded session of the first day, attendees packed into the spacious Madrigal Room to hear perpetual entrepreneur and Atari founder Nolan Bushnell deliver anecdotes about his failures and success from the creation of Pong to his current venture, a free-roaming VR company dubbed Modal. His advice for the audience was to always look out for new projects, because habits aren’t good for the brain. Being forced to do things that may seem impossible can provide invaluable learning experiences.

Tech Competitions

In the exposition hall at Enclave, 60 teams from the AFWERX Fusion Challenge demonstrated unique technologies to advance perimeter security for Air Force applications and beyond. The concepts, ranging from new ideas to commercially available products, approached the problem of perimeter security from all different angles. From camera swarms to attack drones to flexible body armor, each innovation was selected by nation-wide subject matter experts from an applicant pool of more than 180 to exhibit at the AFWERX Fusion Xperience. In addition to live demonstrations at their booths, teams were given five minutes to pitch their technology on stage in front of the crowd. Conference attendees were also given a voice through the Fusion Xperience app, where they could rank their favorite ideas. At the conclusion of the event, a team of military security experts selected the top 10 teams to receive a “Fusion Ticket” which allows them access to funds, coaching and the AFWERX Vegas facility to further develop their innovation with the U.S. Air Force and AFWERX. The final teams selected were:

  • Zenith Aerospace
  • Easy Aerial Inc.
  • 14bis Supply Tracking
  • AFRL’s “Flexible Body”
  • Citadel Defense Co.
  • Sysati
  • Air Force Research Laboratory
  • Soar USA
  • Protective Innovations
  • Rozin Security
  • AFRL’s “On Demand UAS”

Also part of the Fusion event was fusion taking place with other organizations contributing towards innovative solutions for the Air Force. SOFWERX held the final phase of its ThunderDrone RPE III competition seeking out the next level of counter-drone technology. Out of more than 100 teams who entered the competition, five were selected to test their solutions at the Nevada Test & Training Range. Live demonstrations from each participant were shown on the massive screen in the lobby while the action took place on the third floor of the venue. The winners, Team Dedrone, fused radar and acoustic systems to develop a drone defender gun, which can ground enemy drones without causing damage. The winners received $300,000 for 1st place, $200,000 for 2nd place and $100,000 for 3rd place.

UNLV LOOKS TO BOUNCE BACK WITH SEASON SWEEP…

The Lady Rebels will be playing a second straight road game Wednesday night and are hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s loss by completing a season sweep of Air Force when they face the Falcons in Colorado Springs in a 6 pm (PT) contest in Clune Arena.

The game will be live streamed on the Mountain West and there will also be a radio broadcast with the call of Wyatt Tomchek, with both available through UNLVRebels.com.

UNLV saw its four-game win streak snapped in its last game, a 69-56 setback at Wyoming as the Cowgirls connected on 12 of its first 15 shots from three-point range. That loss dropped the Lady Rebels down into a tie for first place with the Cowgirls, as both team are 9-3 in league play, while Colorado State is right behind the pair at 10-4.

The good news for UNLV is that its facing an Air Force squad that last in the conference in three-pointers per game at 3.8. In the Lady Rebels’ three conference losses this season, their opponents had connected on 12, 12 and 14 three-pointers. In the first meeting this year, UNLV held a 38-14 edge on points in the paint and shot 54.5% from the floor on the way to a 69-57 victory. UNLV has won 11 straight in the series, with the last loss on Jan. 12, 2013 in Clune Arena.

The Lady Rebels’ success in the conference this season has been fueled by its outstanding post play. UNLV has outscored its past 10 opponents 346-188 on points in the paint while holding a +8.5 rebound margin for the 10 contests. That size shows up even more on the offensive boards, where UNLV is rebounding an impressive 39.8% of its missed shots in MW play. The Lady Rebels are also finding their way to the free throw line, and are currently tied for 20th in the nation with 372 made free throws this season.

UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Runnin’ Rebels Travel To Air Force Shorthanded

UNLV

RUNNIN’ REBELS TRAVEL TO AIR FORCE SHORTHANDED
UNLV men’s basketball to play Falcons in early Saturday game without leading scorer Rashad Vaughn

The UNLV men’s basketball team, winner of four of its last five games, is coming off a 73-61 win vs. Fresno State on Tuesday and will now travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 12 p.m. MST/11 a.m. PST at Clune Arena.

After losing three straight games – at Boise State on Jan. 13 in overtime (82-73), at San Diego State on Jan. 17 (53-47) and vs. New Mexico (71-69) on Jan. 21 – UNLV won three straight with wins over Utah State (79-77) in overtime at home on Jan. 24, at Nevada, Reno (67-62) on Jan. 27 and vs. Air Force (74-63) on Jan. 31, before losing last Saturday at Colorado State by just a point (83-82) when a buzzer-beating 3-pointer was barely off the mark.

Taking out the overtime loss at Boise State, and the wins over Air Force, Fresno State and San José State (74-40), UNLV’s other seven Mountain West games have been decided by an average of 3.3 points per game (a one-point game, three two-point games, two five-point games and a six-point game).

UNLV, which had to replace all five starters from a year ago, has used a rotation this season that includes five freshmen, one sophomore and two seniors. Freshman guard Rashad Vaughn, who is out of action after suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee on Tuesday vs. Fresno State, led the team in scoring with an average of 17.8 ppg, which ranks second in the Mountain West and third in the country among freshmen. Sophomore forward Christian Wood has 14 double-doubles this year, which ranks seventh in the country, and has averages of 15.0 ppg (2nd on the team, 7th in MW), and a team high of 10.0 rpg (2nd in MW, 16th in the country) and 2.9 bpg (2nd in MW, 14th in the country). Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh leads the team and the league in blocks with 2.9 per game (13th in the country, 2nd among all freshmen). Senior guard Cody Doolin leads the squad and MW with 3.9 apg and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.2, which leads the conference and is eighth nationally. Freshman guard Patrick McCaw leads the MW in assists per game (4.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.6) during conference-only games.

As a team, the Runnin’ Rebels are third in the nation in total blocks (167), third in blocks per game (7.0 bpg), 11th in defensive rebounds per game (27.13) and 35th in field-goal percentage defense (39.0).

Saturday’s game will be shown on ESPN3 with Jim Barbar and Bob Donewald calling the action. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM in Las Vegas. UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Lady Rebels Double Up Air Force 87-43

UNLV

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOUBLES UP AIR FORCE IN 87-43 VICTORY

Lady Rebels post largest-ever winning margin in Mountain West play

Thanks to a total team effort that included the most steals in 14 years, UNLV cruised to a record-setting 87-43 victory over Air Force on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West women’s basketball action at Cox Pavilion. With the win, the Lady Rebels move into a tie for sixth place in the Mountain West at 8-8, along with San Diego State. That sets up a key contest on Tuesday, as UNLV (11-17 overall) travels to the Aztecs with the winner of the game locked into playing Air Force in the first round of the 2014 MW Tournament, while the loser will drop to no higher then seventh.

The 44-point victory is the most-ever by the Lady Rebels in a Mountain West game, topping an 82-41 win at San Diego State on Jan. 27, 2001. It also marked the first time since that SDSU game that UNLV had doubled up on a MW opponent’s score. In overall games, it’s the largest win margin since a 93-46 win over Columbia in Honolulu, Hawaii on Dec. 29, 2011. Another mark set in the game was UNLV’s 22 total steals, tied for its most ever in a Mountain West game and most overall since recording 22 against Wyoming on March 4, 2000.

“It was fun to literally play everybody and have everybody contribute,” said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. “We haven’t done that all season. It was a good atmosphere good energy, we had so many different people step up early on”

A total of 10 players scored at least four points or more for the Lady Rebels, and all 13 players that dressed out saw at least seven minutes of action. The starters led the way, with Alana Cesarz scoring 16 points on 6-8 shooting and Danielle Miller right behind her with 13, while Amie Callaway added eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds. The bench was emptied in the final 10 minutes, and several Lady Rebels took advantage of their extra playing time, as Briana Charles scored in double-figures for the second time this year with 10 points, and Rejane Verin posted 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Two-sport athlete Denali Murnan received a career-high 10 minutes of action and made the most of it, with all new career-highs after knocking down three of four shots for six points, grabbing three rebounds and coming up with four steals.

“I thought Mia (Bell) was doing a great job leading the team, Alana was making her shots and Danielle was playing super aggressive so it was a whole unit doing it and doing it together,” said Olivier. “Its been a long year, its been frustrating at times, but I felt like the girls put all that past and now they’re really focusing on getting ready for the tournament. It was really good basketball by us today.”

UNLV held a 31-14 overall edge on points off turnovers after forcing Air Force (1-25, 0-16 MW) into 28 for the game. The Lady Rebels also held a 49-30 advantage on the boards, leading to an 18-4 difference in second chance points. UNLV finished the game shooting 46.3% (31-of-67), was 4-of-11 from three-point range for 36.4%, and made 21-of-29 at the line for 72.4%.

Air Force had three players in double-figures, Jimi Blagowsky and Missy Byrd both with 10, and Madeleine Philpot with 10. The rest of the team combined for just nine points. The Falcons were held to 34.5% shooting (19-of-55) from the floor, were 1-of-12 from three-point land and 4-of-10 at the charity stripe.

UNLV opened the game with a 13-2 edge, but then went to its bench early, and Air Force took advantage by scoring eight straight to close within 13-10 on a jumper from Blagowsky at the 13:38 mark. The Falcons stayed close for the next seven minutes, and the game was in single digits for the last time on a jumper from Camille Thompson for a 28-20 game with 5:59 to play in the half. Charles quickly answered the basket with a layup at the other end, and then she came up with two straight steals on consecutive Air Force possessions, turning both into fast break layups. UNLV added three more points to complete the 9-0 run, and Air Force came no closer then 13 points the rest of the half, with the Lady Rebels taking a 44-26 edge into the break.

The Lady Rebels slowly increased their lead in the second half, and was up 69-36 off a pair of Bell free throws with exactly 10 minutes left. The starters then sat for the rest of the game, and UNLV’s bench would finish the contest outscoring Air Force 18-6.

UNLV’s game at San Diego State on Tuesday will have a 6 pm tip-off.

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOSTS AIR FORCE SATURDAY ON REBEL KIDS CLUB DAY

Lady Rebels also recognizing Misfit MARCH Madness, both teams to wear mismatched socks during the game

The UNLV women’s basketball team plays the first of two home games in a week when it hosts Air Force on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm at the Cox Pavilion. Saturday is Rebel Kids Club Day, and there will be several activities for kids including a bounce house, face painting and a photo booth with Hey Reb, all starting at 2:30 pm. The game is Military Appreciation Day as well, and anyone showing a military ID will receive two for one tickets.

UNLV is the first collegiate team to participating in Misfit MARCH Madness, a program with the purpose of spreading the message to stand up against bullying, and all the Lady Rebel players, as well as the players off the Air Force squad, will be wearing mismatched socks during the contest. All fans are encouraged to do the same to show their support for the cause.

All-time UNLV is 17-0 against the Falcons in Las Vegas, and the average margin of victory is over 21 points, with only one win by less then double-digits. A win would give UNLV its second conference sweep of the season, along with Utah State.

There will be a live webcast of the game featured on the Mountain West Network at UNLVRebels.com, while the UNLV radio broadcast, featuring the call from Adam Candee, Jesse Vineyard and Dominique Harris is available on KSHP 1400 AM and also off a link at UNLVRebels.com

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Miller Leads Lady Rebels To 72-65 MW Road Win At Air Force

UNLV

LATE CHARGE CARRIES UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO 72-65 WIN AT AIR FORCE

Danielle Miller scores career-high 24 points in the victory

Trailing by seven points late in the game, UNLV hit Air Force with an 18-3 run and would score 26 points in the final six minutes to claim a 72-65 Mountain West women’s basketball road victory at Air Force on Saturday afternoon from Clune Arena. The Lady Rebels snapped a losing streak to improve to 4-10 overall, 1-1 in league play.

“We did a good job when we got in trouble and fell behind,” said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. “We got together and had some good execution and some things went our way. Good things happen when you think positive, and we were able to use that to pull out the road win at the end.”

The Falcons (1-11, 0-2 MW) led by as much as nine points, and were ahead 50-42 at the 9:11 mark of the second half. After UNLV scored four straight to close within four points, Air Force’s Camille Thompson drained a three-pointer to push the edge back to seven, 53-46 with 6:06 on the clock. UNLV then clamped down on defense, not allowing a point for almost a three-minute stretch. Danielle Miller meanwhile led the charge on the offensive side, scoring six straight before Réjane Vérin converted a layup off a great assist through traffic by Mia Bell. Vérin’s basket, coming at the 3:26 mark, gave UNLV a 54-53 advantage, its first lead since late in the first half.

After Air Force went one-of-two at the line on the other end to tie the score, Aley Rohde was the next Lady Rebel to step up. On the next four possessions, she scored off an offensive rebound, blocked a Falcon shot, hit a short jumper off a Miller assist, and then rebounded the next Air Force miss, which lead to a Vérin layup and a 60-54 edge. Air Force drew a foul and made two free throws to close within four. UNLV answered back with four of its own at the line, going up 64-56 at the 1:19 mark. That completed the 18-3 run for UNLV, of which 16 of the 18 points were scored by the trio of Vérin, Rohde and Miller. Air Force did cut the edge to four once, but UNLV closed out the win by going 8-of-8 at the charity stripe in the final minute.

Miller finished the afternoon with a career-high 24 points, and was 12-of-16 at the free throw line, which included making her last 10 attempts. Vérin was next for UNLV with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Bell posted her fifth straight game in double-figures with 12. Rohde notched her second double-double in a row with 11 points and a career-high tying 13 rebounds. UNLV shot just 32.8% (21-of-64) from the floor and was 2-of-11 from three-point range, with both makes coming from Bell. The Lady Rebels made up for their shooting by getting to the line, where they were 28-of-38 for 73.7%. The Lady Rebels also held advantages in both points off turnovers (17-10) thanks to their 14 steals, and in second chance points in 17-7, as they owned a 46-40 edge on the boards, and 17-8 on the offensive side.

“I thought Danielle did a great job today,” said Olivier. “She played aggressive basketball today she’s had a really good few days of practice, is stepping up as a leader. I thought she did a good job of playing good defense while staying in with her fourth foul, and made all her free throws down the stretch. Réjane really stepped up on the boards, Mia had great leadership, while Aley also did a great job rebounding today.

“One of our keys today was to take advantage of our inside presence, and while we didn’t score as much as we wanted in the paint, we were able to draw fouls and get to the line. We had good energy today, and when you have good energy on the road that’s a big advantage.”

The first half was tight for the first few minutes until UNLV used an 8-2 run to open up a 21-14 lead at the 7:46 mark. The lead was still at seven points with under five to go, 27-20, when Camille Thompson scored five straight for the Falcons and Lindsey Lewis added a jumper to tie the game. Following a Miller layup, Thompson completed a four-point play to put Air Force ahead, and they added three more points for a 34-29 edge, before the Lady Rebs scored the last four points of the half to go into halftime trailing 34-33.

In the second half, the Lady Rebels got a jumper from Alana Cesarz, but then went cold from the floor, not getting another basket for a three-minute span. Air Force would push the lead back to seven during that time, and the advantage for the Falcons stayed at five or higher until the final six minutes.

Air Force was led by Thompson with 23 points. Lewis and Charae Medina both added 12 each. The Falcons shot 42.6% (23-of-54) for the game, were 6-of-20 for 30% from behind the arc, and made 13-of-19 at the free throw line for 68.4%.

The Lady Rebels play again on the road in their next game, a Wednesday, Jan. 8 contest at in-state rival Nevada, Reno at 6:30 pm, That game is also part of the Govenor’s Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools sponsored by NV Energy.

UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER NEWS: Rebels Run Air Force 3-1

UNLV

UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER RUNS PAST AIR FORCE 3-1

Rebels get goals from three different players in the home victory

UNLV received goals from three different players and dominated the flow of the game for almost the entire afternoon in a 3-1 victory over Air Force on Friday afternoon in Mountain West women’s soccer action from Peter Johann Field. UNLV evened its record at 8-8-2 with the victory, and stand at 3-5 in league play, while the Falcons dropped to 2-11-2, 1-5-1 in the MW.

The Rebels went up 1-0 on an early score, as Jenn Wolfe lofted a pass into the box, and Dakota Blazak was in position to redirect the ball into the goal from five yards out. That was the freshman’s second score of the year, coming in the 12th minute. UNLV added a second goal 10 minutes later, and this time Blazak started the play with a pass into the box from the right side. Susie Bernal drove into the box, chested the ball down in front of her before sending a hard shot to the right side of the goal. That put UNLV up 2-0 in the 22nd minute, and that would be the halftime lead as well.

UNLV finished the opening half with a 6-3 edge on shots, and almost doubled the Falcons again in the second half, 9-5. The score remained the same however for the majority of the second stanza, until the final 10 minutes when Addy Guida notched her second goal of the year. This one came following a corner kick from Bernal that found a driving Guida 18 yards out from the goal. Guida slotted a hard shot to the right side, for a 3-0 Rebel lead.

“We came out on fire and had a few near misses before Dakota’s spectacular goal,” said UNLV head coach Michael Coll. “The whole team played with great confidence from the first minute to the last and it was well deserved to get three goals at home in front of our fans. Our third goal from the corner kick was impressive and gave us a nice cushion against an Air Force team who battled our players very hard for the whole match.”

The Rebels were just minutes away from a shutout, but the Falcons would get on the scoreboard in the 87th minute, which accounted for the final 3-1 margin. The score came after Katie Case hit the crossbar with a shot, that rebounded back to Megan Dozier who then placed it back in the net for the score.

The final shot total was 15-8 for UNLV, and 8-3 on shots on goal. Corner kicks were also in the Rebels’ favor at 5-2. Kylie Wassell finished with two saves in net for UNLV, while Erin Rost was credited with five.

“Tonight’s performance was vital to get us back on track for a conference finals place and I’m happy for the team to get another win at home. We fell asleep on their goal near the end and we have to learn how to close games out but even so it’s clear that some of the younger players are improving each week. This performance will give us confidence heading into a tough match with Wyoming.”

The Rebels now have a quick turnaround for their next game, a road contest at Wyoming in Laramie on Sunday afternoon at 12 pm (PT).
