Tarkanian Classic Returns to Orleans Arena with Top High School Basketball Teams Dec. 19-20

WHAT:

The Tarkanian Classic basketball tournament returns to Orleans Arena, bringing some of the nation’s most talented high school basketball players to the court on December 19-20.

Named after legendary UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, the tournament will feature top girls and boys high school basketball teams from across the country. Since its inception, the Tarkanian Classic has become one of the most popular prep tournaments in the nation, featuring high school players who have gone on to enjoy major success in both college basketball and professional basketball leagues. Teams from coast to coast will be represented in the tournament, and will be separated into four divisions for tournament play.

UNLV ATHLETICS NEWS: Basketball Showcase Set For Oct. 19 At Sam Boyd Stadium

UNLV BASKETBALL SHOWCASE SET FOR OCT. 19 AT SAM BOYD STADIUM

Free fan event featuring the men’s and women’s basketball teams will be held prior to homecoming football game
UNLV Athletics will hold its annual free preseason fan event for its men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs on Friday, Oct. 19, outside Sam Boyd Stadium.
 
The showcase, which will be held in conjunction with a football game for the first time, will be located adjacent to the Rebel Athletic Fund and alumni pregame hospitality areas near the west entrance of the stadium. The Thomas & Mack Center basketball floor that the Runnin’ Rebels played on through the 2016-17 season will be used along with portable bleachers. 
 
The unique event will begin at 5:30 p.m. before UNLV football’s homecoming game vs. Air Force at 7 p.m. Open to the public, the showcase will be a first look at this year’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and will feature team introductions, a basketball competition including fans, autographs and much more.
 
Fans in attendance will receive the official team schedule posters for each program and students will get a free T-shirt (while supplies last). Additionally, vouchers will be distributed at the conclusion of the event for an exclusive item to be redeemed during the men’s basketball game on Saturday, November 10.
 
Free parking will be available at Sam Boyd Stadium for the showcase. While fans don’t need a ticket to attend the event, tickets to the football game may be purchased at UNLVtickets.com, by calling 702-739-FANS (3267) or at the Sam Boyd Stadium Box Office.

The Runnin’ Rebels will face Montana State-Billings in an exhibition game at the Thomas & Mack Center on Friday, November 2 at 7 p.m., before hosting Loyola Marymount to open the regular season on Saturday, November 10 at 7 p.m., while the Lady Rebels, who will not play an exhibition game this year, open their season at the Cox Pavilion vs. Wright State on Friday, November 9 at 6 p.m.

UNLV WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE ATHLETIC FUND ADVISORY BOARD HOSTED WINE AND CHEESE SOCIAL

It was an exciting evening at the Mendenhall Center on Feb. 6, 2013 when coaches, student-athletes, and community supporters gathered to celebrate the exceptional female sports teams at UNLV with a Wine & Cheese Social. The UNLV Women of Excellence Athletic Fund Advisory Board hosted the event, bringing together UNLV athletics with campus and community members to thank them for their support and to inspire new members to get involved.

Linda Staley, a former UNLV basketball player and now an Advisory Board member emceed the evening’s program. Amy Bush, Head Coach of women’s golf, expressed her gratitude on behalf of all the coaches for assisting with summer school funding and other program enhancements. Swimmer and SAAC representative Hilary Ego remarked on current fundraising efforts that have strengthened the women’s swimming and diving program. Jordan Hardy from the track and field squad, spoke of the great mentorship opportunities that the Fund has provided her. Volleyball player Madeline Westman outlined her personal experiences at UNLV regarding community outreach activities.

The evening was capped off by the recognition of the Division I Hip Hop National Champion Rebel Girls and their amazing performance. Guests then made their way over to the women’s basketball contest against Fresno State.
