PROGRAMS AND PROMOTIONS
The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs and promotions for September.
National Beer Lover’s Day, Friday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m. to midnight. Guests visiting The Underground speakeasy will enjoy $5 select draft beers when they whisper the password, “Beer me.”
Science of Crime – Chemistry, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2 – 3 p.m. in the Oscar B. Goodman Room on the third floor. Forensic science is a complex discipline that encompasses more than a dozen distinct fields. Presented by The Mob Museum and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Forensic Laboratory, this program in the Science of Crime series explores the chemistry detail with Forensic Scientist Meagan Castor and Forensic Scientist Jason Althnether. The chemistry detail provides controlled substance and trace evidence analyses. A former criminalist in the Drug Analysis Section of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Crime Laboratory and currently part of the LVMPD’s Controlled Substances Unit, Castor will share her expertise in the field. This program is free with Museum admission and for Museum Members.
Community Safety Forum – Emergency Preparedness, Sunday, Sept. 16, 2 – 3 p.m. Each month, The Mob Museum partners with the LVMPD to offer FREE Community Safety Forums. These events, which include FREE Museum admission sponsored by NV Energy, address ways members of the public can inform and protect themselves. September’s forum will focus on emergency preparedness in the event of a disaster occurring within Southern Nevada. Mary Camin from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will share how residents can prepare, plan and respond to different types of disasters. Live-streaming of this presentation will be available on the Museum’s website.
Southland Syndicates: Jack Dragna and Organized Crime in Los Angeles, Saturday, Sept. 22, 2 – 4 p.m. Author J. Michael Niotta will share his unique perspective on the history of organized crime in the City of Angels. Niotta is the great-grandson of syndicate boss Jack Dragna, whose criminal enterprises included gambling operations, bootlegging and other illegal activities. The author will also explain how the Mob differed from East and West Coasts to how pop culture has fostered misconceptions through glorified portrayals of the people involved in the Mob era. Following the discussion, Niotta will sign copies of his book, “The Los Angeles Sugar Ring: Inside the World of Old Money, Bootleggers & Gambling Barons.” This program is free for Museum admission and for Museum Members.
Wiseguy Speaker Series: Professor Mark Galeotti, Unmasking the Russian Mafia, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 7 – 9 p.m. One the foremost experts on Russian organized crime, espionage and the Russian Mafia Professor Mark Galeotti has studied Russia’s murky and mysterious underworld for more than 20 years. Galeotti’s presentation will reveal the inner workings of the Russian Mafia from his own personal experiences with Russian criminals, as well has details about Vladimir Putin’s involvement in organized crime and what threats the Russian underworld poses to the United States today. Galeotti will also sign copies of his book, “The Vory: Russia’s Super Mafia,” whose members originated in Stalin’s labor camps and now include gangster-businessmen operating in positions of unapparelled power. This program is free with Museum admission and for Museum Members.
Organized Crime Today Videoconference Program, Saturday, Sept. 29, 2 p.m. In this inaugural videoconference program, held in the Museum’s Organized Crime Today exhibition space, Latin American organized crime expert Ioan Grillo will discuss the activities of Mexican drug cartels and Central American gangs. Based in Mexico City, Grillo is an English-born journalist and leading voice chronicling organized crime in the Western Hemisphere. Grillo will discuss the upcoming trial of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the Trump administration’s efforts to target MS-13 and the latest strategies to combat organized crime in Mexico. He will also take questions from the audience. This program is free with Museum admission and for Museum Members.
International Coffee Day, Saturday, Sept. 29, 9 a.m. to midnight. Spend Saturday catching up over coffee … cocktails! In honor of International Coffee day, visitors will enjoy 25 percent off all The Underground’s coffee cocktails, such as Last Night in Vegas (bourbon, Fernet Menta, cold brew coffee) and the American (applejack, cinnamon, brown sugar, cream).
