UNLV’s Dedan Thomas Jr. was named the Mountain West Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the second straight week and third time overall this season, the league announced Monday.
Thomas Jr., who was named the MW Preseason Freshman of the Year in October, also earned the weekly recognition on Dec. 18 and Feb. 5.
In UNLV’s only game of the week last week, Thomas Jr. led the Runnin’ Rebels to their second win over a ranked team this season as they defeated No. 25 New Mexico at a sold-out Pit, 80-77 on Saturday.
He scored a career-high 25 points on 8 of 12 from the field, including making his only 3-point attempt, and went 8 of 10 from the free throw line. He also dished out a game-high-tying four assists and tallied two rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
UNLV improved to 5-2 in its last seven games against ranked teams and has now defeated two ranked teams in the same season for the second straight year.
It was UNLV’s fourth straight win overall and third in a row against the Lobos. It was also UNLV’s second straight victory at a sold-out Pit against a ranked New Mexico team. UNLV has won four of its last five games at the Pit and it marked just the second loss of the season for the Lobos at home.
NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN’ REBELS: UNLV will play its second straight road game on Wednesday at Fresno State. The 8 p.m. contest will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. The Runnin’ Rebels’ next home game will be on Saturday vs. intrastate rival UNR at 8:30 p.m.
