SAN DIEGO STATE VISITS SATURDAY
Runnin’ Rebels host Aztecs at Thomas & Mack Center at 7 p.m.
After playing the last two games on the road, the UNLV men’s basketball team (14-6, 3-4 MW) will return to the Thomas & Mack Center for the first time in 10 days to host San Diego State (12-7, 4-4 MW) on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
There will be free pregame games, activities and performers on the concourse. There will also be a pregame student tailgate by the Tark statue starting at 5 p.m., the first 3,000 fans will receive a clear backpack courtesy of SNWA, the first 750 students will receive a red rally towel and the first 300 fans will receive a voucher for a free popcorn. This week is Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers Week, which is a nationwide event when basketball coaches across the country unite for a common cause – saving lives from cancer. Coaches and their staff across the nation wear sneakers with their suits during games to raise awareness and help save lives from cancer by raising funds and encouraging people to educate themselves about cancer prevention, screening, and early detection.
UNLV split its recent road trip with a win at Colorado State (79-74) last Saturday and a loss at Fresno State (69-63) on Tuesday. UNLV went 11-2 during non-conference play this season with its only two losses coming in overtime – at Northern Iowa and vs. Arizona (now ranked No. 11/12) at home.
The Runnin’ Rebels are ninth in the country in field-goal percentage (50.6), 11th in scoring (86.2 ppg), 16th in rebounding (40.45 rpg), 27th in 3-point field-goal percentage defense (31.0) and 30th in assists (17.0 apg). Individually, freshman forward Brandon McCoy and junior forward Shakur Juiston rank in the top 23 in the country in rebounding. McCoy is 18th with 9.9 rpg, while Juiston is 23rd with 9.8 rpg. UNLV is the only team in the nation with two top-23 rebounders. McCoy ranks 10th in double-doubles with 11, while Juiston is 38th with eight. Senior guard Jordan Johnson is 25th in the nation in assists with 6.0 apg.
Saturday’s game will be televised by CBS Sports Network with Rich Waltz and Bob Wenzel calling the action.
