Attendees will also learn more about the inner workings of Search Bloc, the joint Colombian-U.S. task force that conducted an intensive 18-month operation that tracked Escobar. Las Vegas History Day: Updated Exhibit and Mural Honor the City’s Early Years
Date: Sunday, May 15
Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Locations: The updated exhibit is located on the Museum’s third floor, and the mural is in the Museum’s paid parking lot.
Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum admission.
Description: In recognition of the City of Las Vegas’s birthday on May 15, 1905, the Museum will debut its newly revamped exhibit titled “Tough Little Town” as well as an outdoor mural honoring the city’s early history. Located on the third floor, the “Tough Little Town” exhibit tells the story of early Las Vegas before the Mob moved in. Inspired by the Museum’s 10th anniversary this year, the exhibit has been refreshed with new stories, images and artifacts illustrating the rise of Las Vegas from a small railroad town to an emerging gambling destination. The exhibit was funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities.

The second segment of the Museum’s outdoor Las Vegas history mural parallels the story told in the “Tough Little Town” exhibit. The first segment, completed in 2021, focuses on the bustling 1940s in Las Vegas. The second segment debuting on May 15 goes back further, charting the city’s development from the 19th century through the 1930s. Located on the retaining wall surrounding the Museum’s paid parking lot, the mural is the work of respected local artist Miguel Hernandez, who pairs his artistic talents with his enthusiasm for the city’s history. The mural was funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities.

Speakers:

  • Geoff Schumacher, the Museum’s vice president of exhibits and programs, will be available for interviews from 9 to 10 a.m.

The Mob Museum presents a three-part series: Breaking the Cycle of Incarceration. The second event in this series follows:

The Root Causes of Crime: Exploring a Community-First Approach to Crime and Punishment

Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Inside the historic courtroom on the second floor. A livestream of the presentation will be available on the Museum’s website. To RSVP to attend in-person or for the livestream link, click here.

Experts will also discuss the psychological foundations of criminal justice reform and various methods to reduce and prevent crime.
