Off to its best start to a season in six years at 6-0 after defeating Southern Utah, 101-82, on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center, the UNLV men’s basketball team will travel out of town for the first time this season as it takes on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. PT. The game is part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge.
The Runnin’ Rebels are one of just 29 teams left in Division I that are undefeated. They rank in the top 10 nationally in rebounding, scoring, scoring margin, assists and 3-point field-goal percentage defense. Individually, freshman forward Brandon McCoy and junior forward Shakur Juiston are both second in the country in rebounding (13.0 rpg) and senior guard Jordan Johnson is fifth in assists (8.0 apg). McCoy (3rd) and Juiston (8th) are also in the top 10 in double-doubles with five and four, respectively.
The 2017-18 season marks the second under head coach Marvin Menzies for the Runnin’ Rebels. Menzies and his staff have brought in a recruiting class for this year that has been ranked as high as No. 12 in the country and features McCoy, who was a McDonald’s High School All-American, and Juiston, last year’s National Junior College Player of the Year. The Runnin’ Rebels also return their leading scorer from last season – senior guard Jovan Mooring.
UNLV is averaging 96.3 ppg this season and has scored 85 or more points in all six of its games. Four Runnin’ Rebels are averaging double figures, led by McCoy’s 20.2 ppg. Johnson is second with 15.8 ppg, then Mooring with 15.3 and Juiston at 13.2. McCoy and Juiston are both averaging a double-double.
Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Brad Wells and Kevin Lehman calling the action. Jon Sandler and former Runnin’ Rebel Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM and online via the UNLV Gameday App and TuneIn (link at UNLVRebels.com).
