Vitalant urges all eligible blood and platelet donors to give during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and help end an ongoing shortage
Known as Your Local Bar, Distill and Remedy’s Tavern’s October initiatives will honor ‘Make a Difference Month’ with a month-long fundraiser to benefit the Professional Firefighters of Nevada and is also hosting a critical blood drive. (They held another blood drive last week).

Known as Your Local Bar, Distill and Remedy’s Tavern’s ongoing October initiatives will also honor ‘Make a Difference Month’ with a month-long fundraiser to benefit the Professional Firefighters of Nevada. Select locations will host local blood drives in memory of 10.1 and also support local heroes by donating 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of a Tito’s or Jack Daniel’s cocktail (at $10) and #VegasStrong shirts ($20) and jackets ($40) for the entire month. Patrons are also encouraged to donate money in the fire boots at each location where donations over $20 will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a fire station dinner
According to blood services provider Vitalant, 40,000 pints of blood are needed daily, and there is a great need. The decline in blood donations includes the pandemic disrupting routine donating habits and a summer when many resumed traveling. The shortage is for blood type O, which is the type most frequently used for transfusions, but all blood types are needed.

o Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S. Patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or surgery may require blood transfusions to replenish healthy blood
cells
o Year-round, more than 25% of the blood supply goes to help patients fighting all types of cancer.
o Platelets have a very short shelf-life. They must be transfused within a week of donation.
- There’s a critical need for donors of all bloodtypes, especially those with type O blood.
o O-negative can be used universally to help patients of any blood type. O-positive can be used for any patient with a positive blood type.
o While some patients need blood for a one-time medical issue, those who have blood disorders may depend on regularly scheduled transfusions throughout their lifetime.
